About the journal
Biointerphases is an AVS open access journal that provides an interdisciplinary platform for scientific exchange among the biology, chemistry, physics, and materials sciences communities. It offers a discussion forum for rapid dissemination of scientific theories, results, and interpretations. Biointerphases serves as a global vehicle for the biomaterials interface community and encourages dialog between scientists and the public with respect to cogent policy issues.
Announcement: Biointerphases now listed in PubMed! We are pleased to announce that the AVS journal Biointerphases has recently been selected to be indexed and included in MEDLINE, the largest component of PubMed. PubMed is the freely accessible online database of biomedical journal citations and abstracts created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM庐). Being included in PubMed and the Web of Science means Biointerphases articles reach the full audience of biomedical and biomaterial scientists worldwide.
Biointerphases is indexed and included in:
- MEDLINE, the largest component of PubMed
- Thomson Reuters products Science Citation Index Expanded, Materials Science Citation Index, Biochemistry & Biophysics Citation Index, Biological Abstracts, and BIOSIS Previews
- Elsevier's bibliographic database - SCOPUS and EMBASE
Instructions to Authors
Articles This journal publishes invited and regular articles: original research reports comprising a complete, detailed self-contained description of a research effort. All articles must contain an abstract.
Reviews Review papers provide an updating of an area of science or technology pertinent to the scope of this journal. These papers comprise the 鈥淢yth or Reality锟斤拷?section of the journal. Reviews must contain an abstract.
The following types of submissions are shorter, focused publication formats and as such do not require the same degree of completeness as a regular article or review. An abstract is not required, nor are any specific and/or subsection headings. Where appropriate, the use of figures and diagrams to highlight the text is encouraged.
Editorial Commentary/Letters to the Editor Commentary and letters can be written on any subject relevant to the journal or the Biointerphase community.
Perspectives Perspective papers summarize research areas in biointerface science for non-experts in the specific area. They should be self-contained, focused on the most relevant discoveries and phenomena, and finish with an outlook on future research directions.
Reports These are reports on work in progress in interdisciplinary research programs.
Opinionated Essays These are essays of opinion on research and science policies
General
Manuscripts Manuscripts are accepted with the understanding that they: are novel; contain quantitative data, modeling and interpretation; have not been copyrighted, submitted, published or accepted for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should include a title page, text, references and a figure and table caption sheet. Authors should submit manuscripts as an electronic pdf file of the text and figures to Biointerphases@avs.org. (See Format section also.)
Please Note: Sending a pdf file is needed for submission/review. Once a paper is accepted, the publisher requires an MSWord or TeX file of the text. Tables should also be stored with the text in the MSWord or Tex file type, one per page. The figures will need to each be in separate files (not embedded) and in one of the following formats: PostScript, EPS, or TIFF files. Once a paper is accepted the author should have these file formats ready to send to the AVS Publications Office 锟斤拷?Biointerphases. If you prefer, hard-copy with original figures may also be sent to the AVS Publications Office 锟斤拷?Biointerphases, Caller Box 13994, 100 Park Drive, Suite 105, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709. Phone: 919-361-2498, Fax: 919-361-1378
Screening Every submission is screened by at least two editors before sending out for review. The author is notified in case rejection without review is recommended.
Style Authors are expected to follow the conventional writing, notation, and illustration style prescribed in the American Institute of Physics Style Manual which is available online from the AIP, visit www.aip.org/pubservs/style.html. Following the formatting information reduces copy-editing time, which could reduce the author's publication fee. For more information, see Biointerphases Style Notes for Authors (pdf) and Template instructions (pdf).
Keywords Please send 5 keywords for your paper. See also Biointerphases Keywords (pdf).
Reviewers Please suggest 3-4 reviewers for your paper.
Fees A signed author fee agreement form should accompany the manuscript.
Publication Charge: To support the cost of wide dissemination of research results through online publication production of a data base of articles, the author is requested to pay author a fee of $800 (7+printed/final pages) with a reduced rate of $700 for articles needing minimal copy-editing; $500 (1-6 printed/final pages) with a reduced rate of $400 with need of minimal copy-editing.
For more information about reducing copy-editing fees, please read our Template instructions (pdf). AIP's Electronic Physics Auxiliary Publication Service (E-PAPS) is a free depository for material that is part of and supplementary to a published paper, but is too long to be included in the journal. Inquire for further detail.
Color Figures Online/Print Policy Figures submitted in color will be produced online in color as well. Upon acceptance of a paper the author needs to send the Editorial Office each figure (whether black/white or color) in one of the publication needed file types (ps, eps or tif.) Color figures will also then be printed in color for the end-of-year (print-on-demand) volume. Color figure reproduction (online/print) is included in the author fee detailed above.
Copyright A signed copyright form (pdf) should accompany the paper.
Format
Template A template and instructions are available to assist authors in manuscript preparation. Following this template or format information closely could eliminate copy-editing time at the the publisher and thus reduce the author's fee.

Abstracts An abstract must accompany each article. The abstract should be separate and double-spaced. It should be adequate as an index and as a summary. It should give all subjects, major and minor, concerning which new information is presented. It should give the conclusions of the article and all numerical results of general interest. An abstract is usually reprinted verbatim in abstract journals. Therefore, great care should be used in writing it.
- Enter text as single column, double spaced
- Place only one figure per page (including all parts) at the end of the text
- Number figures in the order in which they appear in text
- Include a figure caption sheet
Tables All but the simplest tabular material should be organized into separate tables. Tables should be numbered with Roman numerals and placed at the end of the running text. Each table must have a caption typed at the top of the table, which makes the data in the table intelligible without reference to the text. Avoid complicated column headings. If necessary, use symbols which are explained in the caption. Enter a double horizontal line below the caption, a single line below the headings, and another double line at the end of the table.
References References should be collected and entered (double-spaced) on a separate page. They should be numbered consecutively and arranged thus:
1A. B. Smith, Phys. Rev. 41, 852 (1932). 2H. Lamb, Hydrodynamics, 6th ed. (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, England, 1940) pp. 573, 645.
Supplementary Material There is an opportunity for authors to post supplementary material or animated files. If applicable, please include this link with your contribution so the material is available for reviewers. Upon acceptance of a paper, posting of this material is enabled through AIP's Electronic Physics Auxiliary Publication Service (E-PAPS) which is a free depository for material that is part of and supplementary to a published paper, but is too long to be included in the journal.
Sending Manuscripts
Once a paper is accepted, the publisher requires an MSWord or TeX file of the text. Tables should also be stored with the text in the MSWord or Tex file type, one per page. The figures will need to each be in separate files (not embedded) and in one of the following formats: PostScript, EPS, or TIFF files. Once a paper is accepted the author should have these file formats ready to send to the AVS Publications Office - Biointerphases.
