Instructions to Authors

Initial submission

Natural Resource Modeling is an international journal devoted to mathematical modeling of natural resource systems. It reflects the conceptual and methodological core that is common to model building throughout disciplines including such fields as forestry, fisheries, economics and ecology. This core draws upon the analytical and methodological apparatus of mathematics, statistics, and scientific computing.

Natural Resource Modeling is intended to serve as an antidote to disciplinary fragmentation, to provide a common forum for the exchange of ideas, and to promote an orderly scientific approach to the broad issues of conservation and resource management. As such, submissions are welcomed where mathematical analysis may be applied to a wide variety of resources: renewable and exhaustible resources, terrestrial and marine resources, energy, minerals and materials, land and soils, water resources, problems of pollution and residuals, managed biological populations, integrated pest management, agriculture and fisheries, rangeland and forest, wildlife and wilderness, preservation of endangered species and of genetic diversity, and still others.

Natural Resource Modeling publishes primary research papers, expository survey articles and special issues on ecological, environmental, and natural resource themes.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nrm. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (434 817 2040), or via the red 'Get Help Now' link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. If you cannot submit online, please contact the Editorial Office by e-mail (NRM@holycross.edu).

The submission should be a single file, with a distinctive name. The Editor would appreciate any suggestions as to who on the editorial board would be best qualified to handle the review of the manuscript. Submission of a paper is a representation by the author that the manuscript has not been copyrighted, published, or submitted elsewhere.

The manuscript should be concise, logical, and unequivocal. Publication is facilitated if authors double-check for typographical and other errors and ensure that manuscripts and figures meet the requirements outlined below. Manuscripts that do not conform will be returned for correction before consideration. If in doubt, consult the Editorial Office. Authors are charged for excessive changes in proof.

A full-length Article includes a title page, abstract, keywords, text, acknowledgments, literature citations, tables, figure captions, and figures.

Notes and Letters do not have an abstract and are prepared in narrative form without headings, except for 'Literature Cited.'

All parts of the manuscript, including footnotes, tables, and figure captions, should be typewritten, double-spaced with margins at least 2.5 cm wide.

Title

The first page should contain only the title and the name, affiliation, and complete address (plus current address, if different) of the author(s). The title should be brief and contain words useful for indexing and information retrieval.

Abstract and Key Words

The abstract, of not more than 200 words typed on a separate page, should precisely reflect the contents of the paper, and focus attention on the purpose of the study, principal results, conclusions and their significance. Below the abstract, provide and identify as such three to ten key words that will assist in cross-indexing your article.

Text

As a general guide, The Chicago Manual of Style is recommended. Spelling should be standard U.S. (not British) to conform to Webster's Third New International Dictionary. Units should conform to the Syst猫me International d'Unit茅s (SI). Non-standard abbreviations must be defined the first time they appear. Mathematical symbols, Greek letters, and unusual symbols should be identified clearly; superscripts and subscripts should be legible and carefully placed.

Illustrations

Illustrations should be submitted as electronic files at the appropriate resolution and the size intended for publication. Color images should be submitted in CMYK color. For file format, submit line artwork (vector graphics) as Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), and halftones or photographic images (bitmap files) as Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Minimum acceptable resolution at final, published size is 300 dpi for color figures, 500 dpi for grayscale images, and 1200 dpi for line art. For uploading large files more quickly, LZW compression will reduce file size without affecting quality. Further information on preparing electronic figures is available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp>.

If necessary, illustrations may be submitted in high-resolution, photographic hardcopy. Submissions with electronic illustrations in native file formats or of insufficient resolution will not be considered. Authors are encouraged to submit additional, unlabeled photographs or drawings to be considered for the issue cover.

Natural Resource Modeling will publish all color figures on the web free of charge. Printed color charges are charged at a cost of $500 per figure.

References

References should be cited in the text by author and (in parentheses) year of publication. References at the end of the manuscript should be arranged alphabetically by author and follow the style of these examples:

A. Brooke, D. Jendrick and A. Meeraus [1992], GAMS: A User's Guide, Scientific Press, So. San Francisco, CA

R. Newall and W. Pizer [2003], Discounting and Uncertainty in Climate Change Policy Analysis, Land Econ. 79, 369-381.

Copyright Transfer Agreement

A Copyright Transfer Agreement, signed by all contributors, needs to be included with the submission of your manuscript. The form can be found here (http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/nrm_cta.pdf). For more detail about copyright and a list of frequently asked questions, click here (http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/nrm_cta.pdf). The form should be scanned in and uploaded to Manuscript Central along with the article to be submitted or if scanning is not an option, faxed to the Editor at Fax: 508-793-3040.

After Acceptance

After a paper is accepted, Natural Resource Modeling would like to receive any computer files associated with the paper. Do not send any materials to the office until you are contacted by the editorial office. We prefer TeX or LaTeX files (no special style sheet is required) but will gladly accept whatever files you can send. If you have figures please send them in both the original program format and, if possible, in PostScript format. Please make 1 figure per file with no caption (we will insert the caption) and entitle the files fig1.ps, fig2.bmp, etc. so we can easily identify the correct figure numbers. If figure files are unavailable please send original pen and ink or mainframe output. Output from a duplicating machine, such as a Xerox copy, does not reproduce very well.

It is very important that the office be notified of any changes in your email address.

Proofs

Proofs are sent directly to the corresponding author from Wiley-Blackwell. Alterations initiated in proof, special handling of figures, etc. are billed to the author. An electronic pdf version of the article is provided to the corresponding author free of charge; a hardcopy reprint order form is sent with proofs.

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services.

Author Services enables authors to track their article -- once it has been accepted -- through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production so they don't need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit http:///www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission, and more.
