Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts submitted to the Journal are only accepted on the understanding that they are subject to editorial review and that they have not been, and will not be, published in whole or in part in any other journal.

Papers written in English, Portuguese or Spanish will be accepted. When manuscripts are written in Spanish or Portuguese, and English Summary must also be included.

Types of Contribution

Original articles should contain material that has not been previously published elsewhere, except in a preliminary form. These papers should not exceed 5000 words. Short Communications are research papers constituting a concise but complete description of a limited investigation, which will not be included in a later paper. They should be as completely documented as a regular paper and should not occupy more than 2,500 words. Reviews and mini-reviews will be accepted in areas of topical interest and will normally emphasize literature published over the previous five years. Letters to the Editor are published from time to time on subjects of topical interest.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts must be neatly typed (size page A4), double-spaced throughout, including tables, with at least 2 cm margins on all sides (authors are invited to use the included template). Authors should consult a recent issue of the Journal for style. The Editor reserves the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Every page of the manuscript must be numbered at the right top, preceded by the name of the author to whom the correspondence should be sent. Underline words that should be in italics, but do not underline any other words. The usage of italics should be limited to scientific names of organisms. A cover letter is not required, but if included it should be placed at the beginning of the manuscript.

Manuscripts in general should be organized in the following order:
  • Title: should be clear, concise, and unambiguously reflect the paper's contents. If the paper is written in Spanish or Portuguese, the Title must include a translation to English.
  • Name(s) of author(s): first name, initial(s) of the middle name(s), and family name of each author. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk (*).
  • Complete postal address(es) of affiliation(s) for all authors.
  • E-mail address of the corresponding author, as all correspondence, including proofs, should be sent only to him.
  • Summary: not exceeding 150 words, reporting concisely on the major findings. Many abstracting services use abstracts without modification, so this section should be comprehensible in its own right. When manuscripts are written in Spanish or Portuguese, and English Summary must be also included.
  • Key Words: at least three in alphabetical order will be listed. If the manuscript is written in Spanish or Portuguese, translation of key words to English should be included.
  • Introduction: briefly review important prior publications and state the reasons for the investigation being reported.
  • Materials and methods: description of methods, equipment and techniques (including statistical treatments used in the research).
  • Results.
  • Discussion (may be combined with the Results section).
  • Conclusions: must not reiterate any discussion or introductory comments, they must be genuine conclusions drawn from the results of the study.
  • Acknowledgements and any additional information concerning research grants, etc.
  • References: will be numerated correlatively as they are cited in the text and listed separately under the title References (please use a hanging indent: second and subsequent lines indented). The style used for citation of articles in journals (1), monographs (2), and chapters in books (3), which must be strictly observed, is given in the following examples:
  (4) Souza, H.M., G.R. Borba-Murad, R. Curi, R. Galleto & R.B. Bazotte (2001) Res. Commun. Molec. Pathol. Pharmacol. 110: 264-72.
Journal names should be abbreviated according to ISI (you may consult the site
http://library.caltech.edu/reference/abbreviations/)

  (5) Minoia, C. & L. Perbellini (2000) Monitoraggio ambientale e biologico dell'esposizione professionale a xenobiotici: chemoterapici antiblastici. Morgan, Milan, Vol. 3.

  (6) Pathak, M.A. (1997) "Photoprotection against harmful effects of solar UVB and UVA radiation: an update", in "Sunscreens: development, evaluation and regulatory aspects", (N.J. Lowe, N.A. Shaath, M.A. Pathak, eds.) Marcel Dekker, New York, pp. 59-79.
  • Tables and Figures: will be numbered using Arabic numerals in the order they appear in the text. Letters and symbols included into the figures should be made in a suitable size, since figures are usually reduced to half a column wide size (7.5 cm).Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figures". They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text, but separately. All illustrations should be clearly marked with the figure number. All figures are to have a self-explanatory caption. Captions of Tables and Figures should be supplied on a separate sheet.

The authors are expected to correct only typographical errors on the proofs. The proof should be returned to the Editor within 72 hours. The reprints will not be sent to the authors because they can be downloaded for free from the web site: http://www.latamjpharm.org in PDF format.

Submission of all types of manuscripts to Latin American Journal of Pharmacy proceeds totally on line via the homepage of the journal (http://www.latamjpharm.org). After registration, authors will be asked to upload their manuscript and associated artwork. Full instructions on how to use the online submission tool are available at the web address listed above.

Submission should be acomplished following succesive steps:

  1. The corresponding author will provide his/her identity, affiliation (including complete postal address), and electronic address.

  2. The following steps will include the separate uploading of the Title, Authors (first name, initial(s) of the middle name(s), and family name of each author) and Affiliation (including postal address) of each author.

  3. Next the full manuscript (including tables, figures and captions) should be uploaded.

  4. Finally, artwork (including schemes, photographs or graphs, all of them named as correlative Figures) should be uploaded as JPG, PNG, GIF or XLS files.

Once the submission procedure is successfully finished, the corresponding author will immediately receive a message via e-mail and the paper will be automatically sent to the reviewers. Reviewers' opinion will be opportunely notified to the corresponding author by the same way. When the reviewers recommend modifications to be made in the original manuscript, the corresponding author should send the new version following the same procedure indicated when the original manuscript was sent for the first time. Once the paper is approved the corresponding author will receive a PDF file (uncorrected proof) and a form where corrections to be made should be stated. When the issue including the paper will be in press the corresponding author will receive a final PDF file. Full free access to the paper via the homepage of Latin American Journal of Pharmacy (http://www.latamjpharm.org) will be only available when the further two new issues will be published.
