About the journal

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology represents an established forum for the entire field of obstetrics and gynaecology, publishing a broad range of original, peer-reviewed papers, from scientific and clinical research to reviews relevant to practice and case reports. It also includes occasional supplements on clinical symposia. The journal is read widely by trainees in our speciality and we acknowledge a major role in education in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Past and present editors have recognised the difficulties that junior doctors encounter in achieving their first publications and spend time advising authors during their initial attempts at submission. The journal continues to attract a world-wide readership thanks to the emphasis on practical applicability and its excellent record of drawing on an international base of authors.

Abstracting & Indexing

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is abstracted and indexed in Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts Services, Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, EBSCO Online, Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, Helminthological Abstracts, Index Medicus/MEDLINE and Review of Medical and Veterinary Mycology, Science Citation Index Expanded and Current Contents/Clinical Medince.

Instructions to Authors

EDITORIAL POLICY
The journal will consider original material for publication relevant to the entire field of obstetrics and gynaecology, from laboratory research to clinical reports. All material is subject to peer review by members of the editorial board, and a specialist reviewer where indicated. Articles will be published in the following broad groups: original laboratory or clinical contributions (1500-2500 words), reviews relevant to practice (4000-6000 words), short communications and case reports (maximum 400 words, 1 figure or table and 10 references, at the Editor's discretion), correspondence (maximum 400 words) and book reviews solicited by the journal.

EDITORIAL NOTICES
Submissions:
All submissions should be made online at the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Manuscripts are considered for publication on the understanding that they are original, have not been published elsewhere and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The first author named must accept the responsibility for ensuring that both the version of the paper submitted and the corrected proofs have the approval of all the co-authors. Submission of a manuscript will be taken to imply that all authors have obtained permission from their employers or institution to publish, if they have a contractual or moral obligation so to do; and that relevant ethical approval has been obtained for clinical studies. The Editorial Board reserve the right to make changes which may clarify or condense papers where this is considered desirable.

Copyright: It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Informa UK Ltd or the named Society, Association, body or person that holds the copyright. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. All material should conform to the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36-47). Authors submitting reports of randomized clinical trials should ensure that their report conforms with the CONSORT Statement (http://www.consort-statement.org; The Revised CONSORT Statement for reporting randomized trials: explanation and elaboration. Ann Intern Med 2001;134:663-94). Authors will normally be entitled to publish any part of their paper elsewhere provided permission is requested and the usual acknowledgements are given. The assignment of the copyright will not affect subsisting patent rights or arrangements relating to them. Illustrations, tables or quotations from other publications are already copyrighted and can be reproduced only with written permission from the copyright owner. Written permission to use these should accompany the manuscript.
You must warrant that any patient, client or participant in any research or clinical experiment or study who is mentioned in the Article has, wherever appropriate or possible, given written consent to the inclusion of material pertaining to themselves, and that they acknowledge that they cannot be identified via the Article and that you will not identify them in any way, with the qualification that complete anonymity cannot be guaranteed.

Manuscripts should be typewritten with double spacing and wide margins. The author should keep a copy. Original articles, but not case reports, should be prefaced by a summary not exceeding 150 words, typed on a separate page. We prefer to receive manuscripts in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word processing programs as well as Macs. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".

A Title Page should be included showing the author(s) of the paper, their affiliations and containing the Corresponding author's full name, e-mail address and postal address. Keywords (up to 6) should be included for original articles and reviews.

Illustrations Digital images are required. Any lettering must be large enough to stand a reduction in size. Explanatory legends should be typed separately when prompted on Manuscript Central. Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file. Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons. When coloured illustrations are submitted authors will be asked to make a contribution towards the cost of reproduction. Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible. All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)). Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), JPG, PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Colour Figures. Any figure submitted as a colour original will appear in colour in the journal's online edition free of charge and can be downloaded. Paper copy colour reproduction will only be considered on condition that authors contribute to the associated costs. Charges are: 500/US$1030 for the first colour page and 250/US$515 for each colour page thereafter per article. (Colour costs will be waived for invited Review Articles)

Tables should be saved separately to the accompanying manuscript. They should have an identifying number and a short descriptive heading. All illustrations and tables must be referred to in the text. Original papers should follow the usual format of a separate title page, brief introduction, methods and clinical material, results, and discussion.

Photomicrographs. If these are to be published, the stain used and the magnification should be specified in the legend. The author must confirm that he has verified that the magnification cited represents the actual magnification, from microscope slide to the photograph supplied.

SI units and abbreviations. It is the policy of the Journal to employ SI units, with the equivalent conventional units in parentheses, though blood pressures may be given in mmHg. Abbreviations for SI units and other terms may be found in: Units, Symbols and Abbreviations: a Guide for Biological and Medical Editors and Authors, 5th edition, London, Royal Society of Medicine, 1994.

References should be in Harvard Style. Please ensure that all references cited in the text are included in the reference list and vice versa. In the reference list, each reference should either give names and initials of all the authors or 6 names et al for long articles and 3 names et al for case reports. The reference list should contain only articles that are accessible to most scientists. Unpublished work, including personal communications, manuscripts in preparation and manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted for publication, should be referred to in the text in the following way: (A. Stone, unpublished) (J. Brown, personal communication). Articles that are accepted for publication but are not yet published may be listed as 'in press' in the reference list. Citation in the text should be by author's name and date of publication. References should be cited in chronological order and et al. should be used for more than two authors, for example: (Davies & Smith, 1996; Frost et al., 1997; Williams, 1997). In the reference list, references should be cited in alphabetical order. Papers by the same author should be given in the order (i) single author (ii) two authors alphabetically according to the name of the second author (iii) three or more authors chronologically, with (a) (b) and (c) etc. for papers published in the same year, in the order in which they are cited in the text. References to articles in journals should include authors' names with initials, year of publication, full title of article, journal title given in full, volume number, and first and last page numbers. References should be in the format of the following example:

Gosden RG, Picton HM, Nugent D, Rutherford AJ. 1999. Gonadal tissue cryopreservation: clinical objectives and practical prospects. Human Fertility 2: 107-114.

Reference to books should include authors' names, year of publication, chapter title, book title, edition number, page numbers, names of editors, name of publisher and city of publication, for example:

Snowdon R. 1990. The family and artificial reproduction. In: Bromham DR, Dalton ME, Jackson JC, editors, Philosophical Ethics in Reproductive Medicine. Manchester. Manchester University Press; pp 70-185.

NIH Public Access Policy: In consideration of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy, Informa Healthcare acknowledges that the broad and open dissemination of NIH-funded-research results may benefit future scientific and medical research. Because we value the current and future contributions our journals make to the scientific body of knowledge, we have made certain that our policies accommodate those authors who wish to submit to PubMed Central.

Informa Healthcare's position with respect to public access to NIH-funded work published in Informa Healthcare journals is as follows:

  • Informa Healthcare authors may voluntarily submit their funded work to PubMed Central after a 12-month embargo period;
  • 閳ユ竾unded work閳?shall be defined as the final, peer-reviewed manuscript that is accepted by the Editor in Chief of the journal. This manuscript must not be altered by Publisher's copyediting and typesetting services; and
  • this embargo period begins the day the work is published online on our website.

Declaration of interest: It is the policy of all Informa Healthcare to adhere in principle to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE, http://www.icmje.org/index.html#conflict).

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organisation with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, paid expert testimony, honoraria, speakers' bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications or travel grants) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure.

All submissions to the journal must include full disclosure of all relationships that could be viewed as presenting a potential conflict of interest. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. This must be stated at the point of submission (within the manuscript after the main text under a subheading "Declaration of interest" and, where available, within the appropriate field on the journal's Manuscript Central site). This may be made available to reviewers and will appear in the published article at the discretion of the Editors or Publisher.

If no conflict is declared, the following statement will be attached to all articles:

Declaration of interest: The authors report no conflicts of interest. The authors alone are responsible for the content and writing of the paper.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent authors with these relationships from publishing work, but rather to adopt transparency such that readers can make objective judgements on conclusions drawn.

Offprints and Reprints: Offprints and reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased once the article has been published online. Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink搴 when proofs are received. Copies of the Journal can be purchased at the authors' preferential rate of 15.00/$25.00 per copy.
