About the journal

Aims and Scope

Homology, Homotopy and Applications is a refereed journal which publishes high-quality papers in the general area of homotopy theory and algebraic topology, as well as applications of the ideas and results in this area. This means applications in the broadest possible sense, i.e. applications to other parts of mathematics such as number theory and algebraic geometry, as well as to areas outside of mathematics, such as computer science, physics, and statistics. Homotopy theory is also intended to be interpreted broadly, including algebraic K-theory, model categories, homotopy theory of varieties, etc. We particularly encourage innovative papers which point the way toward new applications of the subject.

Papers will be refereed carefully with regard both to correctness, originality, and general level of interest of the results. In addition to original research papers, HHA also considers expository papers in this general area.

Why publish with HHA?

  • Run by mathematicians: The publication process is run by active researchers who focus on the needs of the authors and readers.
  • Distinguished editorial board
  • Easy submission process: Just send a pdf file to one of the editors.
  • Flexibility: While we have style guidelines, we also accept variations as long as they are clear and in common use.
  • Copyright: Authors have the option of keeping the copyright on their articles.
  • Professional proofreading and copyediting: Since November 2006, we have used a careful and thorough copyeditor, whose native language is English, and who has an M.Sc. in statistics.
  • Fast publication: We often produce proofs within two to three weeks of the submission of the final version, and publish online within days of the proof corrections being received. However, we let authors take their time with the proof corrections.
  • Online access: Articles are freely available online as soon as the proofs are corrected. (We cannot guarantee that online access will remain free; ask your library to subscribe to the print version to help ensure this.)
  • Reasonably priced print version: Our print version has a reasonable price, which helps cover the costs of copyediting, running the website, printing and shipping.

History

Homology, Homotopy, and Applications was founded in 1999 by Hvedri Inassaridze of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. His vision, that a journal focusing on homotopy theory and its applications would be a valuable resource for the mathematical community, as well as the energy he invested in maintaining it since that time, have been crucial to the development of the journal. The Editorial Board wishes to express its gratitude to Hvedri for these contributions.

Instructions to Authors
INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

Authors are invited to submit articles to any Editor, including the Managing Editor, the Executive Editor and the Editor-in-Chief. All papers are refereed and acceptance of an article by an Editor indicates that the high standards of the journal have been met. For more information, see the page about the Editorial Process.

We prefer that articles be prepared in LaTeX 2e format following the style guidelines below. At the time of submission, please send a pdf file to the Editor you choose.

If an article is accepted, the authors should prepare a final version using the journal style, following the guidelines below. The references should be updated, and the content of the article should only be changed as requested by the referee. Authors should send both the source .tex file and a pdf file to the Editor they have been dealing with. Articles are copyedited by professional copyeditors who may make additional stylistic changes, but it is the authors' responsibility to follow the guidelines below. Please send .tex files as attachments, rather than simply including them in the message body, as this can lead to corruption.

At the time of acceptance, authors must submit a Consent to Publish form. Authors may choose to retain ownership of copyright to their work, subject to appropriate use of the work by the journal.

Accepted papers will be made available on the web in dvi, Postscript and pdf formats, and will be printed by International Press. Each author will receive 15 complimentary offprints of the published article.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This list is not exhaustive. Authors should use common mathematical style.

Language: Articles are accepted in English, French or German.

LaTeX: LaTeX version 2e is the preferred format. The source file for an article must begin with a comment which includes the following information: the flavour of TeX used, the number of pages, any diagram macro package used, any non-standard fonts, the implementation of TeX used in preparation of the article. An example might be

  % LaTeX-2e document, 12 pp, XY-pic ver 3.1, emTeX version 3.1

The LaTeX class file hha.cls must be used. Please look at the sample tex file and the hhaguide.

Metadata: Articles should include authors' names, addresses and e-mail addresses; AMS 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification; keywords; and an abstract of not more than 200 words. Please use the commands described in hhaguide to provide this information. The abstract should be self-contained and in particular should not cite references.

Numbering: Theorems, Propositions, Examples, etc. must be numbered within sections using the same counter. Subsections are numbered with an independent counter. For example:

 1. Introduction
 2. My first topic
   Definition 2.1
   Lemma 2.2
   2.1 My first subtopic
   Proposition 2.3
   Theorem 2.4
   2.2 My next subtopic
 3. Another section
   Example 3.1
 A. My first appendix
   Theorem A.1

Please use the theorem environments provided by hha.cls, such as \begin{theorem} ... \end{theorem}, to ensure that formatting and numbering are done correctly. Do not override the chosen fonts for these environments or use other versions of these environments.

The Introduction is usually numbered as Section 1.

If your document includes appendices, section them using these commands:

\appendix
\section{First appendix}
...
\section{Second appendix}
...

Equations are usually numbered only if referenced, and are usually numbered using a separate counter running through the whole paper.

Spacing: Please do not adjust the spacing parameters. For example, do not set \parindent to zero or adjust the \textwidth. Also avoid all manual spacing commands, such as "\vskip 10 pt". As a general rule, less formatting is better.

To typeset an expression like "f: X --> Y" use "f\colon X \to Y" to get the right spacing around the colon.

Fonts: The base font size of the journal is 10 point. Please avoid use of elements which depend on another base font size.

Authors are strongly encouraged to use only fonts from the standard TeX distribution (cmr, etc.), AMS symbol fonts (msym...) or the XY-pic fonts. Please discuss the use of other fonts with the Editor.

Authors may choose to put words being defined in bold or italics.

References: Please check all references carefully, using (for example) the free MR Lookup service.

Our preferred format for references:

[7] A.B. Smith, C.D. Smith and E.F. Smith, Title of paper without unnecessary capitals, \emph{Arctic J. Math.} \textbf{23} (2006), 77--88.

[8] X.Y. Zed, \emph{Title of book}, Publisher, City, 2006.

It's also ok to use [SSS] and [Z] instead of [7] and [8].

If BiBTeX is used with LaTeX, bibliographies must be BiBTeXed and .bbl files included in the .tex file. No .bib files will be accepted. Authors are encouraged to use the wonderful amsrefs package.

Acknowledgements: If present, acknowledgements should be put after the introduction or at the end of the main body of the paper, using the \ack command:

 \ack
 We thank ...

Graphics and images: Please discuss the use of embedded images with the Editor.

Misc: Use this style for displayed equations

\[
  1 + 2 = 3 ,
\]
rather than $$ ... $$. Put appropriate punctuation after displayed equations.

Use standard tex commands for accents, e.g. \'e. Do not include 8-bit accented characters in the .tex file.

Macro packages: It is easiest to process an article if it does not depend on external macro files, with the exception of some standard diagram macro packages (see below). Other macros should be placed at the beginning of the file. It is also helpful if any macro that is not actually used is deleted from the source file.

Macros for diagrams: The following diagram packages may be used by authors. The authors are responsible for ensuring that the current version of a macro package has been used. We may be able to accommodate other packages as well; please consult with us. Note that the pstricks package is awkward for us to support.

The XY-pic diagram macro package by Kris Rose.

The LaTeX diagram macro package by Michael Barr based on picture mode.

The LaTeX diagram macro package by Francis Borceux based on matrices.

The diagram macro package by Paul Taylor based on matrices.
