About the journal Aims and Scope:
The Journal of Fire Protection Engineering provides fire protection engineers and other fire safety professionals with information on the most advanced methods and research data in a form that allows for immediate application to engineering problem solving.
Each issue contains in-depth articles by researchers and practitioners on recent advances in such areas as:
· Modeling of the impact of fire on the built environment
· Characterization of fire scenarios for engineering analysis
· Prediction of occupant behavior during a fire
· Performance-based fire safety design and assessment
· Evaluation of fire detection and suppression approaches
· Procedures for taking maximum advantage of computational and test methods
Articles are fully documented, supported by quantitative data developed from tests and research, and when appropriate, well illustrated by photographs and diagrams (in color for the on-line edition of the Journal). New developments from around the world are published.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
Submitting Papers to the Journal
1. An electronic MS WORD file version should be submitted to Dr. Ronald L. Alpert, Editor, Journal of Fire Protection Engineering at the e-mail address: rlalpert@alum.mit.edu Electronic versions in the form of an MS WORD file on CD-ROM may also be submitted to Dr. Alpert at the mail address: 9 Norwood Court, Rockport, MA 01966-1319, USA.
2. Papers will be accepted and published in the English language
3. Titles should be brief, followed by name, affiliation, address, country, and postal code (zip) of author(s). Indicate to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent, including telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address
4. Include a 100-word abstract, key words.
5. Drawings should be uniformly sized, if possible and planned for 50% reduction in size when published. Drawings may be sent electronically in MS WORD format, along with the rest of the manuscript, but .tif files separate from the manuscript would be desirable for superior reproduction. Both line drawings and photographs must be called out in the text. Appropriate captions should all be typed on one sheet and should be understandable without reference to the text.
6. Journal and book references should be identified in the text by enclosing in square brackets and should be numbered in order. Literature references should be listed at end of manuscript, using the following style:
Journal: 1. Halpin, J. C., "title", J. Cellular Plastics, Vol. 3, No. 2, 1997, pp. 432--435.
Book: 2. Harre, R., Cognitive Science: A Philosophical Introduction: From Meaning to Molecules. London, Sage, 2002.
7. As a benefit to authors, we are now offering to host artwork (Figures, Schematics, etc.) in color online, free of charge. Submissions must be made in the form of MSWORD-picture, jpeg, tiff or eps files.
8. Tables. Number consecutively and type on a numbered, separate page. Please use arabic numerals and supply a heading. Column headings should be explanatory and carry units (see example at right).
9. Units & Abbreviations. SI units should be used, with solidus notation for fractions (kW/m2). Parentheses should be used when there is more than one unit in the denominator (e.g. x/(yz)). English units or other equivalents should appear in parentheses if necessary.
10. Symbols. A list of symbols used and their meanings should be included.
11. Proofreading and Reprints. Authors will receive page proofs, which they should correct and return as soon as possible. Also submit key words of your contribution on the separate sheet provided. This is important in helping us to construct the index. All authors will receive a complimentary copy of the issue of the Journal including their paper. Additional copies can be ordered.
12. Copyright Information. All original journal articles are copyrighted in the name of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. All original articles accepted for publication must be accompanied by a signed copyright transfer agreement available from the journal editor. Previously copyrighted material may be published with the written permission of the copyright holder.
13. Headings. Your article should be structured with unnumbered headings. Normally two headings are used as follows:
Main Subhead: DESIGN OF A MICROWAVE INSTALLATION
Secondary Subhead: Principle of the Design Method
If further subordination is required, please limit to no more than one.
14. Equations. Number equations with arabic numbers enclosed in parentheses at the right-hand margin. Type superscripts and subscripts clearly above or below the baseline, or mark them with a caret. Be sure that all symbols, letters, and numbers are distinguishable (e.g., "oh" or zero, one or lowercase "el," "vee" or Greek nu). Handwritten Greek letters should be identified by spelling them out in the margin.
15. Permissions. The author is responsible for obtaining releases from other publishers for Sage Publications to publish material copyrighted by someone else.
GENERAL
The Journal of Fire Protection Engineering, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and Sage Publications are not responsible for the views expressed by individual contributors in articles published in the journal.
Access to 25 free e-prints will be provided; the corresponding author will receive one complimentary copy of the journal for each contributor.
