Instructions to Authors Author Guidelines
Papers and other material for publication should be submitted to the Editor via Manuscript Central. Review articles should be discussed with the Editor before submission. Books for review should be sent to the Editor, PO Box 378, Carlton South, Victoria 3053, Australia.
Articles submitted for publication are understood to be offered only to the Australasian Journal of Dermatology.
A PDF (portable document format) of the article can be ordered for free when the proofs are returned, and will be sent after publication.
Copyright and Conflict of Interest Authors publishing in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology are asked to sign an Exclusive Licence form. All authors must read and agree to the conditions outlined in the Exclusive Licence form, and must sign the form. Articles cannot be considered for publication until signed Exclusive Licence and Conflict of Interest Notification forms have been received. The forms must be posted at the time of manuscript submission to the Editor at PO Box 378, Carlton South, Victoria 3053, Australia. Ensure a covering letter that identifies the manuscript is included. If required the forms may be photocopied and distributed to co-authors for signing. Please return all forms completed by all authors together in one envelope, rather than returning them individually. Authors can download the forms here.
Ethical Policy
-
For clarification of the ethical policy of the Australasian Journal of Dermatology, authors should refer to the section on publication ethics in Van Der Weyden, Martin B. Sponsorship, Authorship and Accountability (Editorial). MJA 2001; 175: 294-6.
- A CONFLICT OF INTEREST NOTIFICATION FORM must be filled out and signed by each author and must be attached to the covering letter. (Photocopies of the published form are accepted.)
- The Australasian Journal of Dermatology subscribes to the principles outlined in the CONSORT STATEMENT (JAMA 1996; 276: 637-9) relating to standards of reporting of clinical trials and to the guidelines for good publication practice as outlined in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) report (Committee on Publication Ethics. The COPE report, 1999).
Style of Papers Manuscripts should be written in readable, unambiguous English which is non-repetitive and intelligible to the practising dermatologist and the professional reader with an interest in dermatology. For guidance regarding style acceptable to the Australasian Journal of Dermatology authors are referred to Hall GM (ed.). How to Write a Paper. London, BMJ Publishing Group; 2003. The editor reserves the right to modify typescripts to eliminate ambiguity and repetition and improve communication between author and reader. If extensive alterations are required, the manuscript will be returned to the author for revision.
Spelling should conform to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, 11th edn (Oxford University Press, 2004). Style should conform to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors' Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts to Biomedical Journals.
In order to ensure a 'blinded' review process, the manuscript should be submitted with an accompanying, separate title page document. The manuscript should be submitted as a word .doc and not feature any author names or details, any self-citations or institutional affiliations. These details can all be included in the separate title page document. Authors whose native language is not English should, if possible, have their manuscript checked by a native English speaker prior to submission. In-house editorial assistance may be provided where clarity of meaning is affected by errors of style, grammar or spelling.
Research Investigations in human subjects must conform to acceptable ethical standards.
- Consent must be obtained from each patient after full explanation of the purpose, nature and risks of all procedures used and the fact that such consent has been given should be recorded in the paper.
- Authors must state that the protocol for the research project has been approved by a suitably constituted Ethics Committee of the institution with which the work was undertaken. The protocol must conform to the provisions of the World Medical Association's Declaration of Helsinki, as adopted by the 18th World Medical Assembly, Helsinki, Finland, June 1964, and the most recently adopted amendments.
Covering Letter A covering letter must be uploaded with the submitted manuscript and should include:
- A clear statement regarding which section of the journal the manuscript is intended for.
- The name, full postal address, telephone number, fax number and email address of the author to whom correspondence about typescript, revisions and proofs should be sent.
- A statement that the Exclusive Licence form has been completed by each author and posted to the Editor.
- A statement that written permission to use copyrighted text, tables and/or illustrations has been obtained and posted to the Editor.
- Confirmation that the Conflict of Interest Notification form has been completed by each author and posted to the Editor. It is important to complete the form in full even if no potential conflict of interest exists, or if sections seem irrelevant to the type of manuscript being submitted.
- Acknowledgement of all funding.
- A statement that no version of the manuscript or any part thereof under my/our authorship has been accepted or submitted for publication elsewhere.
- A statement that signed consent of patients for publication of recognizable photographs has been obtained and sent to the Editor.
- A statement that written permission from the source has been obtained to use any unpublished data and/or personal communications and sent to the Editor. This includes unpublished observations and submitted but not yet accepted material.
- In general, submission of a case report should be accompanied by the written consent of the subject (or parent/guardian) before publication; this is particularly important where photographs are to be used or in cases where the unique nature of the incident reported makes it possible for the patient to be identified. While the Editor recognizes that it might not always be possible or appropriate to seek such consent, the onus will be on the authors to demonstrate that this exception applies in their case.
Electronic submissions The entire article (including tables and figures) should be saved in a single file; only the title page and electronic figures should be supplied as separate files. The following instructions should be adhered to:
Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
Online guidelines If possible, authors should visit the Blackwell Publishing websites for authors, which detail further information on the preparation and submission of articles and figures.
Blackwell Author Services Author Services enables authors to track their article, once it has been accepted, through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources, including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
Author material archive policy Authors who require the return of any submitted material that is accepted for publication should inform the Editorial Office after acceptance. If no indication is given that author material should be returned, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy and electronic material 2 months after publication.

- Line figures are professionally drawn.
- Letters, numbers and symbols are clear and legible (equivalent to 8 pt Univers after reduction).

Figure publication fees
- Up to six (6) black and white figures will be published free of charge.
- The author(s) agree(s) to cover the cost of reproduction of any additional figures (A$100 each).
Units and abbreviations
As far as possible, all units should follow SI conventions, with the notable exception that blood pressure should be measured in mmHg (see JAMA 1986; 255: 2329-39). It is recommended that authors consult the booklet Units, Symbols and Abbreviations: A Guide for Medical and Scientific Editors and Authors, 5th edn (Royal Society for Medicine Press, 1994). Standard abbreviations may be used and should be defined separately and listed between the key words and the introduction. In general, terms should not be abbreviated unless they are used repeatedly and the abbreviation is helpful to the reader.
Conflict of Interest Notification Form
- All financial affiliations and sponsorship pertaining to products and materials mentioned in the paper have been acknowledged.
- Potential financial gain via direct or indirect ownership of stock and shares has been acknowledged.
- All authors have clearly stated that no potential conflict of interest exists if this is the case.
- Certification is provided that potential conflict of interest, where it exists, has been clearly disclosed to study participants.
- Acknowledgement has been made of the participation of any funding source in study design, collection and analysis of data, writing of the report and decision to submit for publication.
- All authors have certified that they are prepared to take full responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the findings.
