About the journal
Description
The Journal of Forest Research publishes original articles, reviews, and short communications covering all aspects of forest research, both basic and applied, with the aim of encouraging international communication between scientists in different fields who share a common interest in forest science. Membership in the society is not a prerequisite for publication in the journal.

Instructions to Authors
Instructions for Contributors
Journal of Forest Research

Types of contributions
Papers are limited to three types: original articles, reviews, and short communications. Each paper must be a report of original research which has not been submitted elsewhere.
Subject area of contributions
Subject areas and fields of papers should be indicated according to the list shown at the bottom of the Manuscript Preparation.
Page lengths
The length of a paper is limited to eight printed pages for original articles, ten printed pages for reviews, and four printed pages for short communications. To encourage more concisely written articles, authors are required to pay a page charge of JPY 30,000 for every page in excess of these page limits. The excess page length should not exceed four printed pages for original articles, five printed pages for reviews, and two printed pages for short communications.
Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be written in English. Authors whose native language is not English must have their manuscripts checked by a native speaker of English before submission. Authors should submit their manuscripts to the Journal of Forest Research online. Please log directly on to the site: https://www.editorialmanager.com/jres and upload your manuscript following the instructions given on screen. In case you have any difficulty while submitting your manuscript online, click on Help in the upper left corner.
Decision to publish
The editors reserve the right to accept or reject manuscripts for publication.
Copyright transfer
Authors transfer the copyright to their articles to the Japanese Forest Society and Springer effective when the articles are accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute an article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media, or any other form); the copyright also covers translation rights for all languages and countries. For U.S. authors, the copyright is transferred to the extent transferable. The "Copyright Transfer Statement" has to be signed and sent to the publisher together with the corrected proofs. The form is included in the proofs authors receive.
Offprints
Offprints may be ordered in lots of 100 when the proofs are returned.
Online First
Papers will be published online shortly after receipt of the corrected proofs. Papers published online can already be cited by their DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers. (Revised on 27 March, 2008)
Manuscript Preparation

|
Style Manuscripts should be arranged as follows: (1) title page, (2) abstract, (3) text, (4) references, and (5) tables and figures. |

|
Typing The text should be double-spaced throughout with margins of approximately 3 cm on top, bottom, and each side of A4 size pages. For reference use during the reviewing process, pages and lines must be numbered consecutively throughout the entire text. |

|
Character formats Characters to be printed in italic, bold, or small capitals should be entered using the features of the word processing software. |

|
Title page The first page of each paper must contain the following items: (1) the title of the paper, (2) the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s), (3) the full postal address with the telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the corresponding author, (4) article type, subject area, and field (see list of "Subject areas and fields" at the end of these instructions), (5) page count for the text, including abstract and references, (6) number(s) of tables and figures listed separately, and (7) any necessary footnotes. |

|
Abstract The abstract should be no longer than 250 words and should be followed by up to five key words. |

|
Text The text of the article should be divided into the following sections, if appropriate: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, tables, and figure legends. |

|
Tables Tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. Each table must be typewritten double-spaced on a separate page. Each table should have a brief and self-explanatory title. Any explanation essential to the understanding of the table should be given as a footnote below the table. Vertical lines should not be used to separate columns; additional space should be used to separate columns, if necessary. |

|
Figures Figures (drawings and photographs) must be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. Each figure should be submitted on a separate page, each bearing the figure number, and the author's name, and the figure number written in the upper right corner. Figure legends should be brief and self-explanatory and should be placed at the end of the text. Figures should be in the desired final size and should be match the size of either the column width (8.4 cm) or the printing area (17.4 × 23.4 cm). If reduction is necessary, the alternative scale desired should be stated. The publisher reserves the right to reduce or enlarge figures. Figure parts should be identified by lowercase roman letters (a, b, etc.). If illustrations are supplied with uppercase labeling, lowercase letters will still be used in the figure legends and citations. |
For production
For production, the publisher requires figure files prepared following these instructions and the Technical Instructions for Manuscripts and Illustrations in Electronic Form. Submit all figures as separate files and do not integrate them within the text. The preferred figure formats are EPS (Encapsulated Postscript) for vector graphics exported from a drawing program and TIFF for halftone illustrations. EPS files must always contain a preview in TIFF of the figure. Microsoft PowerPoint files and illustrations embedded in Microsoft Word documents are not acceptable. The file name should include the figure number. Almost all common graphic programs are capable of saving files in EPS and in TIFF format. This option can normally be found under the “Save As…” or “Export…” commands in the “File” menu. Color figures will always be published in color in the online version. In print, however, they will appear in color only if the author agrees to make a contribution (approx. \110 000 for the first and \60 000 for each additional page) to printing costs. Otherwise, the figures will be printed in black and white. Please note that, in such cases, it is the authors’ responsibility to prepare figures to be illustrative enough to convey the necessary information even after they are converted into black and white.
References
All publications cited in the text should be given in a reference list following the text. Citations of "unpublished results" or papers "in preparation" should be included in the text but not in the reference list. Articles cited in the text will be referred to by the surname of the author with the year of publication in parentheses. If there are more than two authors, only the first author's name is given followed by et al. However, in the reference list, names and initials of all authors should be given. The references should be listed alphabetically by the first authors' names. The titles of periodicals in the reference list should be abbreviated according to international practice.

Proofreading
Authors are informed by e-mail that a temporary URL has been created from which they can obtain their proofs. Proofreading is the responsibility of the authors. Authors should make their proof corrections (formal corrections only) on a printout of the pdf file supplied, checking that the text is complete and that all figures and tables are included. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title, and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the responsible editor. In such a case please contact the Editorial Office before returning the proofs to the publisher. After online publication, corrections can be made only in exceptional cases and in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
Electronic supplementary material
Electronic supplementary material (ESM) for an article in the journal will be published on SpringerLink provided the material is submitted to the editors in electronic form together with the paper and is subject to peer review, and is accepted by the journal editors. ESM may consist of: information that cannot be printed, e.g., animations, video clips, and sound recordings; information that is more convenient in electronic form, e.g., sequences or spectral data; large original data that relate to the paper, e.g., additional tables, illustrations (color and black and white). After acceptance by the journal editors ESM will be published as received from the author in the online version only. Reference will be made to the ESM in the printed version.
