Instructions to Authors
Scope and policy
The Revista Brasileira de Zoologia (RBZool), the journal of the Sociedade Brasileira de Zoologia SBZ, is intended to publish original scientific articles on Zoology, authored by members who are current in their annual dues.
Manuscripts prepared in a language other than Portuguese, Spanish or English may be accepted with the approval of the Editorial Board.
The articles published in Revista Brasileira de Zoologia can be reproduced only with indication of the source. Reference of registered names or trademarks does not imply that such names are exempt from applicable protective lows and regulations. Use of published material for commercial purposes is prohibited.
Form and preparation of manuscripts
Three copies of the manuscript together with the illustrations and tables should be sent to the Editor. The manuscript must be typed double-spaced and left-justified only, with wide margins, on consecutively numbered pages. The front page must include: (1) the title of the article including, when appropriate, the name(s) of the higher taxonomic category(ies) of the animals treated; (2) the name(s) of the author(s) with their complete addresses, numbered in Arabic numerals as referenced in the footnote; (3) an abstract in English, including the title of the article if this is in another language; (4) up to five key words in English, in alphabetical order and different from the words used in the title. Only the names of genera and species should be typed in italics The first citation of an animal or plant taxon in the text must be accompanied by its author's name in full, the date (of plants, if possible) and the family.
Bibliographical references should be typed in small capitals, as follows: SMITH (1990), (SMITH 1990), SMITH (1990: 128), LENT & JURBERG (1965), GUIMAR肊S et al. (1983). Articles by the same author should be cited in chronological order.
ILLUSTRATIONS AND TABLES Photographs, line drawings, graphs and maps should be termed figures. Drawings and maps should be prepared with India ink or similar dense black ink. Photos must be clear and have good contrast. Do not combine photos and drawings in the same figure. The size of an illustration, if necessary, should be indicated using horizontal or vertical scale bars.
Each figure must be numbered in Arabic numerals in the lower right corner, mounted on substantial white posterboard, and labeled on the back with its number, the author's name, and the title of the article; also indicate which is the top of the figure. When preparing the illustrations, authors should bear in mind that the journal has a matter size of 17.0 cm by 21.0 cm and a column size of 8,3 by 21,0 cm including space for captions. If possible, original figures should be no larger than legal or A4 paper. Figures must be referred to in numerical sequence in the text; indicate the approximate placement of each figure in the margins of the manuscript.
Captions of both figures and tables should be typewritten on a separate sheet. Use a separate paragraph for the caption of each figure, table, or group of figures or tables. Tables should be generated by the table function of the word-processing program being used, numbered in Roman numerals and inserted after the References. Tables may be submitted in a separate electronic file.
Computer-generated graphs should be inserted as separate figures at the end of the text, following the tables. Such graphs may be submitted in a separate electronic file. Color figures can be published if the additional cost is borne by the author.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Acknowledgements, sources of financial support and mention of institutional affiliations should precede the References.
REFERENCES The References cited in the text should be listed at the end of the manuscript, according to the examples below.
The title of each periodical must be complete, without abbreviations, and followed by the city of publication.
