Instructions to Authors
Scope and policy
The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBent) is published by the Sociedade Brasileira de Entomologia (SBE). The RBent publishes original papers in Entomology, or even on other groups of Arthropoda. The RBent also maintains sections for scientific notes, book reviews and for announcements of general interest.
Membership in the Society is required of authors who submit manuscripts to RBent. In the case of multi-authored manuscripts, those authors who are non-members should either become members or pay a fee equivalent to one and a half the annual dues.
Manuscripts in languages other than English or Portuguese may be accepted for publication once approved by the Editorial Board.
Form and preparation of manuscripts
The manuscripts should preferably be submitted electronically by email, attached to the message. Manuscripts submitted in printed form (three copies) should be accompanied by the original electronic files in disk or CD. The text should be edited preferably in Microsoft Word? on A4 size paper, double spaced, and using Times New Roman font size12; the right margin should not justified and the pages should be numbered consecutively. The font Times New Roman should also be used for labeling figures and graphs. Only graphs and tables should be incorporated to the text file. Digital images must be sent in separate files, with at least 300 dpi for color images and 600 dpi for bitmap and black and white images, in tiff or low compression jpeg format. Original drawings and photographs should not be sent when first submitting the manuscripts.
The manuscript should have a title page containing the title and name(s) of author(s) followed by number(s) for remission to the footnote. The footnote should contain the complete address(es) of the author(s), including e-mail, and other pertinent information, if necessary. The next page should contain an ABSTRACT, in English and with a maximum of 250 words, presented as one paragraph, including a translation of the title if the manuscript is in another language; KEYWORDS (in English, organized alphabetically and at most five keywords); followed by the "RESUMO" in Portuguese, including the title and "PALAVRAS-CHAVE" in Portuguese, in alphabetic order and similar to the KEYWORDS. Words already included in the title and abstract should not be used keywords.
Scientific names should be followed by author and date of publication at least once in the manuscript. Genus- and species-group names must be written using italics. Any other markings or signs as to emphasize or call attention should not be used. The Editorial Board will decide on how to proceed for particular cases.
In the text, the references should be written as follows: Canhedo (2004); (Canhedo 2003, 2004); Canhedo (2004:451); (Canhedo 2004; Martins & Galileo 2004); Parra et al. (2004).
Illustrations-photographs, drawings, graphs and maps-are called figures and should be numbered consecutively (using Arabic numerals) and, preferably, in the same sequence in which they are referred to in the text. Scale-bars should be positioned either vertically or horizontally. Tables (numbered with Roman numerals) should be presented in separate pages at the end of the manuscript. If necessary, graphs may also be included in the text file at the end. Illustrations in digital format must be sent in separate files. Preferred placement for tables and illustrations may be indicated in the text. The figures can be organized in plates, whose size should not exceed twice the size of a printed page (23 x 17.5 cm). Figure numbers should be in Times New Roman font size 11 and positioned at the lower right corner. Labeling applied to figures (numbers, letters and words) should also be in Times New Roman and in an appropriate size in order that, after reduction, they remain clearly visible without becoming more prominent than the illustrations themselves. The Editorial Board can make small modifications or ask the author(s) for a new plate. Photographs and halftone drawings should not be put together with line drawings in the same plate. Each plate should be properly identified with the author's name and paper title. Figure legends should be typed in a separate sheet. Color illustrations may be accepted for publication provided that the author(s) agree(s) in paying for the extra printing costs.
The ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS should be placed at the end of the text, immediately preceding the References. Authors are encouraged to be succinct. Use the following examples when preparing the REFERENCES section:
