About the journal
The Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo is a scientific journal published by the Brazilian Society for Soil Science (SBCS), founded in 1947, and is responsible for the propagation of original and inedited technical-scientific work of interest for Soil Science.
Contributions must not have been previously published or submit to other periodicals, with the only exception of articles presented in summarized form at professional meetings. Literature reviews are accepted when solicited by the Editorial Board.
Any contribution is subjected to approval by the Editorial Board.
Members' letters and commentaries can be sent to the Responsible Editor for further dissemination. Submitting author assume overall responsibility for the content of articles or notes. The expressed opinions do not necessarily reflect the point of view of the editorial staff or the SBCS. Total or partial reproduction of the articles is allowed, provided the source is explicitly indicated.
Its abbreviated title is Rev. Bras. Ci阯c. Solo, and it should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips
Instructions to Authors
Scope and policy
The Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo is a scientific journal published by the Brazilian Society for Soil Science (SBCS).
Contributions for publication are to be sent in by e-mail only (site: www.sbcs.org.br, E-mail address: autores@sbcs.org.br), not in print, in one of the following forms:
Article or scientific notes. Literature review on a specific theme, by invitation of the Editorial Board.
Letter to the Editor should contain a maximum of four pages (double spacing), related to one of the following categories: (a) Communications directly related to Soil Science; (b) Critical comments on articles published in the Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo.
Contributions, in Portuguese or English only, are subjected to revision and approval by the Editorial Board. With the exception of papers presented at professional meetings in summary form, only unpublished texts, not submitted to other periodicals, are eligible for publication. The submitting author assumes responsibility for co-authors, where there are, as co-responsible for the scientific content of the text.
Texts which are subdivided into parts I, II, etc., must be sent together, as they will be forwarded to the same reviewers.
Form and preparation of manuscripts
The following formatting instructions for articles and scientific notes should be observed:
1. The complete original text should be sent in, ready for publication.
2. Manuscripts must be typed in Times New Roman 12, spacing 1.5, format A4, providing page and line numeration.
3. Texts should be as clear and concise as possible. Only in exceptional cases can papers exceeding 15 pages be accepted.
4. Articles, notes and reviews should begin with the title, followed by the last names of the authors - preceded by the initials - all in capital letters. The title should have a numbered footnote, which specifies if the text was part of a thesis or presented at a professional meeting, subsidiary organizations of the project, and necessarily, the date of reception for publication (Received for publication on / / ). After the name of each author, a numbered footnote should include the author's current position, place of employment, postal and E-mail address. Reference to institutions providing financial support may be made.
5. Articles should be divided, wherever possible, into sections with headings, in the following order: RESUMO, SUMMARY (beginning with the translated English title), INTRODUCTION, MATERIAL AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, CONCLUSIONS, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS and REFERENCES (those cited in the text). This complete subdivision is not necessary for articles on education, literature reviews and scientific notes, though a SUMMARY and RESUMO are always required. The content of each section is expected to meet the following criteria:
5.1. The TITLE should be concise and indicate the content of the text.
5.2. The RESUMO should consist of a brief introductory sentence stating the study's objective, followed by a specification of what was performed and studied, and end with principal results and conclusions. This should be followed by index terms, different from those included in the title. The SUMMARY is the English translation of the RESUMO.
5.3. The INTRODUCTION should be brief, presenting the type of problem and/or working hypothesis(es) dealt with, citing specific references, and concluding with a statement about the study's objective.
5.4. MATERIAL AND METHODS should provide necessary and sufficient information to permit a replication of the study by other researchers.
5.5. RESULTS should contain a concise presentation of the data obtained. Tables or graphs should omit unnecessary data.
5.6. DISCUSSION should contain an analysis of the obtained results, taking current literature into consideration, but without introduction of new data.
5.7. CONCLUSIONS, based only on data presented in the study, should be numbered.
5.8. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS should be succinct and not included in the main text or in footnotes.
5.9. REFERENCES should include studies cited in the text, tables, figures, and be organized in alphabetical order, using the following format:
a. Journals: Name of each author, Title of the article. Abbreviated title of the Journal, volume: initial and final pages, year of publication. Example: MYERS, R.G.; PIERZYNSKI, G.M. & THIEN, S.J. Improving the iron oxide sink method for extracting soil phosphorus. Soil Sci. Soc. Am. J., 59:853-857, 1995
b. Book: Authors. Title. Number of Edition. Place of publication, Editor, year of publication. Number of pages. Example: KONHNKE, H. Soil physics. 2.ed. New York, MacGraw Hill, 1969. 224p.
c. Participation in collective work: Authors, Title of part referred to. In: Name of editor. Title of publication, number of the edition. Place of Publication, Editor, year. Initial and final pages. Examples:
- Chapter of book: JACKSON, M.L. Chemical composition of soil. In: BEAR, F.E., ed. Chemistry of the soil. 2.ed. New York, Reinhold, 1964. p.71-141.
d. Text in Annals: UEHARA, G & GILLMAN, G. Acric properties and their significance for soil classification. In: INTERNATIONAL SOIL CLASSIFICATION WORKSHOP, 8., Rio de Janeiro, EMBRAPA/SNLCS, 1985. p.19-22
e. CD-ROM: URQUIAGA, S.; OLIVEIRA, O.; OLIVEIRA, I.; FERREIRA, E.; ALVES, B.; CADISCH, G. & BODDEY, R. Soil nutrient availability in relation to the productivity of pastures in the Brazilian cerrado. In: WORLD CONGRESS OF SOIL SCIENCE, 16., Montpellier, 1998. Proceedings. Montpellier, International Soil Science Society, 1998. CD-ROM
f. Internet: EL NIÑO and La Niña. Access under: < http://www.stormfax.com/elnino.htm>. Access date: Oct.15, 2000. Abbreviations of journal names should agree with those used by the "abstracting journals", such as those of the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux.
6. References in the text are to be cited using the format: Silva & Smith (1975) or (Silva & Smith, 1975). When there are more than two authors, use the reduced format: (Souza et al., 1975). References to two or more articles by the same author(s) in the same year should be identified with small letters (Ex.: Silva, 1975a,b).
7. Tables should always be numbered with Arabic numerals and identified with clear, concise and self-explanatory titles. Do not use vertical lines. Horizontal lines should appear as a separation between title and heading, heading and content, and beneath the completed table. Format tables with MICROSOFT WORD/TABLE/INSERT TABLE. Each value should be set in its own cell, centralized and aligned.
8. For graphs, Microsoft Windows compatible software should be used (Excel, Power Point, Sigma Plot etc.) Figures repeating information contained in a table will not be accepted.
9. Photographs and maps should be sent in digitized form, using Microsoft Windows compatible software (in one of the following formats: BMP, JPG, TIFF, GIF or WMF).
10. Colored photographs, where indispensable, may also be accepted at the discretion of the Editorial Board. Additional costs will be responsibility of the authsors.
11. The first author of each published article will receive 50 free reprints, and will be responsible for their distribution among the other authors.
