Instructions to Authors

Publication procedure

Articles
Abstracts of all submitted papers are placed on web soon after receipt, with a disclaimer stating that the paper has not yet been peer reviewed. Subject to their relevance, research papers are sent for peer review by an editor and two referees immediately they are received. All accepted papers are placed unproofed on the web for a minimum of 2 weeks. Papers may be published in two categories: accepted for web-only publication, and accepted for web and for subsequent paper publication after suitable revision. The paper version is the definitive proofed copy. Papers not accepted do not appear in either web or paper version. These arrangements permit members of the scientific and medical fraternities to see a wide range of accepted new data at a very early stage on the web and then in print. A copy of the current paper issue is also available on the web until archived. Thus, all papers relevant to the journal are available on web, and remain there until soon after their presentation in the paper version.

Other items
Letters, comments (no longer than 500 words), editorials, short communications, information articles, interviews with leading scientists and clinicians, web conferences, manufacturers' articles and other items are posted on the web immediately after preliminary scrutiny and grammatical editing as necessary. The editors reserve the right to consult referees and make grammatical and/or presentational changes. Proofs of letters and comments will not be sent to authors prior to publication.

Only certain submissions are selected for printing in the paper version and authors must accept at the time of submission whatever decision is made by the editors in this regard. Authors who do not want their material posted on the web must say so on initial submission.

All contributions should be intelligible to as wide an audience as possible, clearly setting out their novelty, significance and possible application to humans.

Submission
Contributions should be submitted in English to the Chief Editor, by e-mail (office@rbmonline.com), or by post (including an electronic copy and one hard copy manuscript on paper). Authors should keep an identical copy for their own reference.

Computer disks
These should be clean, 3.5 inch floppy newly formatted for PC or Macintosh, with text saved as Word for Windows file if the latter. Make sure there are no extraneous files on the disk. Disks and files must not be write-protected.

Text/Copy
Double line spacing with wide margins. Pages must be numbered. Line numbering is also desirable.

Tables
These should be arranged clearly on separate pages and included on the submitted file, or as separate files.

Manuscript requirements

Title:
Must be concise, containing no more than 12 words.

Authorship:
Names, affiliations, e-mail address and full international contact details.

Abstract:
Single paragraph of 150-200 words maximum, which should be comprehensible to readers before they have read the paper. Avoid abbreviations and reference citations.

Summary for lay readers:
A simple summary of maximum 250 words is needed for publication and must be understandable to a wider lay public and to patients. This summary is presented, together with summaries of other contributions, on the web page and in the journal. It can be based on the Abstract but all complex terms must be described simply.

Keywords:
Up to six, which may or may not appear in the title, to encapsulate the principal subjects covered by the article.

Abbreviations:
Restrict to a minimum. Define at first mention in text. Standard units of measurements and chemical symbols of elements need not be defined.

Materials and methods:
Sufficient detail to enable experiments to be repeated, including source company names and addresses, must be supplied. SI units and abbreviations are preferred. If others are used, a conversion factor must be given at first mention.

Statistics:
Procedures and types of analyses must be clearly specified (even where computer programs have been used), referencing publications where necessary to allow readers to ascertain how they were carried out. Large-scale trials should follow the Cochran Principles. Statistical advice can be obtained from Dr D E Walters, Thorpe, The Grip, Linton, Cambridge CB1 6NR, UK (Tel. +44 (0) 1223 891 558; e-mail: dew1@cus.cam.ac.uk) who may require payment for his advice.

Tables:
Keep to a minimum and keep simple. Type on separate sheets. Supply a brief title and number consecutively in arabic numerals in order referred to in text. They should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. Footnotes should be indicated by lower-case superscripts; they should not contain extensive experimental detail or discussion.

Figures:
Keep to a minimum. Mark the top on reverse side. Number consecutively in arabic numerals in order referred to in text. Figure legends must appear on a separate sheet and define all symbols and abbreviations used in the figure. Axes must be appropriately labelled. Files of computer-generated figures should also be included on disks (as above) and artwork should be in a dedicated drawing package such as Adobe Illustrator/Corel Draw/Macromedia Freehand (not presentation), spreadsheet or data-base packages, with each figure in a separate file. Please provide hard copy print out of each figure, with duplicates, clearly identified. Photographs should be no larger than A4 size (28x21 cm) and should be trimmed to remove all redundant areas. Photomicrographs must carry scale bars. No figures will be returned following publication unless a specific request is made at the time of original submission.

Reference list:
In text, first author's name followed by year of publication all in round brackets, e.g. (Edwards, 1980). At the end of the article a reference list in alphabetical order must be given as follows: For books: surname, initials, year of publication, title, publisher, place of publication, number of pages, e.g. Edwards RG 2000 Alternatives in Journal Publishing, The Press, Cambridge, UK. pp. 167. For journals: surname, initials, year of publication, title, journal (not abbreviated), volume, pages (inclusive), e.g. Edwards RE 2000 Beyond multinational publishers. The Editor 4, 45-57. For multiple authors, an example is Cohen J, Levron J, Palermo G et al. 1995 Atypical activation and fertilization patterns in humans. Theriogenology 43, 129-140.

Human and animal experiments:
These must have been carried out according to the Declaration of Helsinki and the Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals (DHEW Publication, NIH, 80-23).

Ethics and vested interests:
Wherever necessary, ethical approval must be included in the manuscript. This includes approval by Ethical Committees, hospitals, departments and any other place of work. Details of such approval must be provided where necessary. Details of vested interests, e.g. member of company board providing equipment etc., shareholder in such a company, or other forms of investment related to the study in question must be published. Referees are also asked to declare any potential conflict of interest, e.g. financial, academic, personal or political.
