About the journal
Journal of the Audio Engineering Society
Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, the official publication of the AES, is the only peer-reviewed journal devoted exclusively to audio technology. It is published monthly, except January/February and July/August when it is published bimonthly, and is sent automatically to all AES members and subscribers. It contains state-of-the-art technical papers and engineering reports; features covering timely topics; pre and post reports of AES conventions and other society activities; news of AES sections around the world; standards and Education Committee work; membership, patents, new products, and newsworthy developments.

Instructions to Authors
Journal Information for Authors
Presentation
Authors should submit a full-page double-spaced PDF with figure captions list for review by e-mail to: Gerri Calamusa, Senior Editor, gmc @ aes . org. (Remove spaces from e-mail address first.) If manuscript is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to submit the original graphics files.

Review
Manuscripts are reviewed anonymously by members of the review board. After the reviewers' analysis and recommendation to the editors, the author is advised of either acceptance or rejection. On the basis of the reviewers' comments, the editor may request that the author make certain revisions which will allow the paper to be accepted for publication.

Content
Technical acrticles should be informative and well organized. They should cite original work or review previous work, giving proper credit. Results of actual experiments or research should be included. The Journal cannot accept unsubstantiated or commercial statements.

Organization
An informative and self-contained abstract of about 60 words must be provided. The manuscript should develop the main point, beginning with an introduction and ending with a summary or conclusion. Illustrations must have informative captions and must be referred to in the text.

References should be cited numerically in brackets in order of appearance in the text. Footnotes should be avoided, when possible, by making parenthetical remarks in the text. Mathematical symbols, abbreviations, acronyms, etc., which may not be familiar to readers must be spelled out or defined the first time they are cited in the text. Subheads are appropriate and should be inserted where necessary. Paragraph division numbers should be of the form 0 (only for introduction), 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, 2, 2.1, 2.1.1, etc. References should be typed on a manuscript page at the end of the text in order of appearance. References to periodicals should include the authors' names, title of article, periodical title, volume, page numbers, year and month of publication. Book references should contain the names of the authors, title of book, edition (if other than first), name and location of publisher, publication year, and page numbers. References to AES convention preprints should be replaced with Journal publication citations if the preprint has been published.

Illustrations
Figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet following the references. Captions should be concise. All figures should be labeled with author's name and figure number. Photographs should be black and white prints without a halftone screen, preferably 200 mm x 250 mm (8 inch by 10 inch). Line drawings (graphs or sketches) can be original drawings on white paper, or high- quality photographic reproductions. The size of illustrations when printed in the Journal is usually 82 mm (3.25 inches) wide, although 170 mm (6.75 inches) wide can be used if required. Letters on original illustrations (before reduction) must be large enough so that the smallest letters are at least 1.5 mm (1/16 inch) high when the illustrations are reduced to one of the above widths. If possible, letters on all original illustrations should be scaled so that they will be the same size when reduced for reproduction in the Journal.

Units and Symbols
Metric units according to the System of International Units (SI) should be used. For more details see "Metric Review" (with updated references) by G. Franklin Montgomery and J. G. McKnight, "Quantities, Units, Letter Symbols, and Abbreviations." We have also compiled a list of frequently used SI units and their symbols which you can view in PDF format by clicking here.
