About the journal
Features critical phase diagram evaluations on scientifically and industrially important alloy systems, authored by international experts. Critically reviewed; contains basic and applied research results, a survey of current literature and other pertinent articles. Covers the significance of diagrams as well as new research techniques, equipment, data evaluation, nomenclature, presentation and other aspects of phase diagram preparation and use. Includes information on phenomena such as kinetic control of equilibrium, coherency effects, impurity effects, and thermodynamic and crystallographic characteristics. Updates systems previously published in the Bulletin of Alloy Phase Diagrams as new data are discovered.

The Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion invites submission of research papers, short communications, evaluations, updates, and letters to the editor. The term "phase equilibria" is to be interpreted in broad context and, in addition to equilibrium conditions, is to include factors that mitigate against equilibrium as well as those that facilitate it.
Manuscripts are welcome on such topics as research techniques, equipment, data evaluation, nomenclature, equilibrium determination, kinetic factors, as well as other aspects pertaining to the significance, representation, and use of phase equilibria data. Papers will be accepted in the following categories: original research (theory and/or experiment), calculations (basic and/or applied), and applications. Phenomena such as kinetic control of equilibrium, coherency effects, impurity effects, and thermodynamic and crystallographic characteristics all fall within the interest area of the Journal.
Submission for publication is representation that neither the manuscript nor the basic information in the manuscript has been copyrighted, published, or submitted for publication elsewhere. Prior publication is a basis for rejection except under special circumstances such as appearance in a conference or symposium proceedings that had very limited circulation. The prior publication history should be clearly noted on the manuscript. If the manuscript is under a prior copyright but still appropriate for publication in JPED, the author must have permission of the prior copyright holder for JPED to print the manuscript and to include it in an online version of the publication.
Comments on evaluations and papers previously published in the Journal are welcome. Comments of broad interest will be considered for publication as letters to the editor or as short communications.
Manuscript Submission and Preparation
Submissions for the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion should be submitted electronically through http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jped. Manuscript review will occur online in a secure environment. Correspondence concerning the submission will be transmitted to the corresponding author via email. Submissions will be accepted through the Manuscript Central site only as of January 1, 2005.
1. Launch Web Browser (Internet Explorer 5 or higher or Netscape 6 or higher) and go to: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jmep. Log in to Manuscript Central or click the "Create Account" option if you are a first time user. If you are creating an account
After clicking on "Create Account" enter your name and e-mail information. Your e-mail information is very important! Click "Next."
Enter your institution and address information as prompted. Click "Next."
Enter your user id and password, then select attributes/keywords that describe your area of expertise. Click "Finish" when done.
Log in and select Author Center. Note: You may update account information any time by clicking on the "Edit My Account" link in the Menu Bar.
2. IMPORTANT: Read all author instructions on how to prepare your manuscript and figures before you submit. Author instructions are found through the "Instructions & Forms" link in the upper right corner of all pages. Print the instructions for later reference. Click the "Submit a Manuscript" link in the menu bar to begin. Enter data and answer questions about the manuscript as prompted. Click the "Next" button on each screen to save your work and advance to the next screen. You will be prompted to upload your files. To upload your files:
a. Click the "Browse" button and locate the file on your computer. Double-click the file name. NOTE: The following file formats, which are unsuitable for production, are excluded from submission: .ppt, .pdf, .exe, .zip, .com, and .vbs.
b. Select the designation of the file in the drop down next to the Browse button. Use the next "Browse" button on the screen and repeat steps 1 and 2 to upload multiple files at once.
c. When you have selected the files for upload, click the "Upload" button.
d. To view your uploaded files, click one of the format links (e.g., HTML, PDF Full Resolution, etc.)
Complete the submission process by reviewing your data. You can edit information by clicking the "Edit" button next to each step. Click the "Submit" button to submit your manuscript. You and your co-authors will receive an e-mail message confirming that the manuscript has been received by the journal. You may log in to Manuscript Central and select the Author Center any time from anywhere to check the status of your manuscript. You may stop a submission at any stage and complete it later. From the Author Center, click on "Unsubmitted Manuscripts" and then click on the "Continue Submission" link to resume the submission process. If you need assistance, click on the "Get Help Now" button found on every screen of Manuscript Central. A Support screen will display where you will have access to the FAQs database, may query the database for a particular solution, may send Support an e-mail query, have access to the Support telephone number. 3. The Copyright Transfer form must be completed before the manuscript can be published. It is preferable to include the form at the time of submission. If the article is not published in JPED, the copyright transfer will not take effect. See section entitled COPYRIGHT POLICY that follows. The copyright transfer form can be downloaded from http://www.asminternational.org/pdf/JPEDCT04.pdf or accessed through the Manuscript Central site.
4. Submit art as separate .tif or .jpg files at 300 DPI resolution for photos and micrographs and 1200 DPI resolution for line drawings. (Art embedded into a Word document defaults to 72 DPI, resulting in low resolution not suitable for print production.) Include micron bars on all micrographs. Color printing of photographic material can be arranged, but will involve a cost billed to the author. Authors should contact Ellyn Vander Kaay, Journals Coordinator, ellyn.vander.kaay@asminternational.org; phone 440/338-5151, ext. 5518, regarding specific papers. For previously published figures and tables, written confirmation of permission to reprint should be included for each item along with the manuscript at submission.
5. The full contact address of the author for correspondence must be provided and will be included in the printed JPED article. Also include contact information for coauthors. If there is only one author, please provide contact information for an assistant or coworker as backup.
6. The title of the contribution should be succinct (no greater than 15 words) and clearly describe the focus of the work. The abstract is the author's summary of a scientific paper and is included in the review procedure. It should indicate newly observed facts, conclusions, and the essential parts of any new theory, treatment, apparatus, technique, etc. It should be concise and informative and only in exceptional cases exceed 200 words.
7. The required Reference format is shown in the section entitled STYLING OF REFERENCES. Reference to unpublished work that is difficult to obtain (such as classified or secret works) should be kept to a minimum. The editor may ask for further clarification or substantiation of such references.
8. Extensive revision at the author's option of text or figures in proof is costly and will be charged to the author. Typographical errors may be corrected and references updated without charge.
9. There are no facilities for translating or making editorial revisions of contributions written in a foreign language.
10. The policy of the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion is to use the International System of Units (SI). For guidelines, see National Bureau of Standards Special Publication 003-003-02380-9 (for sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402). If other units are required for special situations, a conversion to SI must be provided in parentheses or in a table. All temperatures should be reported in degrees Celsius whether or not the values are also given in Kelvin. Phase diagrams may be plotted in atomic percent or weight percent, but all composition data should be reported in atomic percent, with the equivalent weight percent given parenthetically. (The values of the atomic weight used to make the conversion should be reported.)
11. Avoid the use of trade names and proprietary information whenever possible. Such use can occasionally be justified if this is the best way to specify a particular material or process. Company name and location (city, state, and country) must accompany trade name use.
12. A series of papers dealing with the separate aspects of a subject should be cross-referenced. Divisions, such as Part I and Part II, are not recommended as they complicate the review procedure and abstract listings. If such divisions are considered essential, they should be justified by the author at the time of submission and are subject to approval in review.
13. A Table of Symbols and their corresponding dimensional units should be included when symbols are used extensively throughout a paper.
Styling of References
References to published literature should be listed in order of year published. Reference numbers are indicated in text by enclosing them in square brackets positioned on the line, i.e., [1981Abc]. Also acceptable in Section I is to list references in numerical order as mentioned in text. Reference numbers are indicated in text by superscript numerals, e.g., ... phase. [1,2]
1. If the work being cited is an article in a book or journal, the article title must be included.
2. All authors' names must be listed.
3. Use journal abbreviations as given in the current listing of Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index.

4. If an article is written in a language other than English, list the title in the original language, followed by the English translation (if available) in parentheses. State the language of the paper in parenthesis at the end of the citation.

5. References to articles in books, including published conference proceedings, should include the title and the pages within the book. Chapter numbers may be given in place of chapter titles or page ranges. Roman numerals are acceptable. The abbreviation Chap. is used with the number.

6. When citing specifications and standards, the critical elements are the standard number and the name of the standards organization.

7. Private communications, unpublished research, and company and agency reports may be cited when required. The citation must include the affiliation and, where necessary, the address of the person involved as well as the year. Papers presented at meetings but not published are in this category. When citing theses and dissertations, the critical elements are the author's name, the school's name, and the year.

8. In press references must include the journal name and as many details as are available at that time, and be denoted by in press, submitted for publication, or to be published.
Copyright Policy
JPED is subject to the U.S. Copyright Law, which became effective on January 1, 1978. Accordingly, the signed copyright transfer form (Adobe PDF format), must be received in the Editorial Office before an article can be processed for publication. This form, available online, can be downloaded from http://www.asminternational.org/pdf/JPEDCT04.pdf, and must be signed by each author unless excepted as noted under Part A, "work made for hire" or Part B, which pertains to U.S. Government employees. Other copyright transfer forms may not be substituted for this form.
The copyright transfer becomes effective when the manuscript is accepted for publication. If the article is not published in JPED, the copyright transfer will not take effect.
