About the journal
AIM AND SCOPE OF THE JOURNAL

The Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences (JMPS) publishes in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, and planetary materials science, with the additional goal of striving toward the diffusion and progression of related scientific fields.  As an international journal, we aim to provide international exposure for the results of research in Japan, as well as serve as a venue for the international exchange of research.

Given the remarkable rate at which publications have been expanding to include several fields, including planetary and earth sciences, materials science, and instrumental analysis technology, the journal aims to further the development of a variety of scientific and interdisciplinary fields, to encourage the wide scope of such new fields into the future, and to contribute to the growing international scientific community.

To cope with this emerging scientific environment, in April 2000 the journal's two parent societies, MSJ* (The Mineralogical Society of Japan) and JAMPEG* (The Japanese Association of Mineralogists, Petrologists and Economic Geologists), combined their respective journals (the Mineralogical Journal and the Journal of Mineralogy, Petrology and Economic Geology). The result of this merger was the Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences, which has a greatly expanded and enriched scope compared to its predecessors.

INTRODUCTION

Manuscripts to be considered for publication in the Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences should be original, high-quality scientific manuscripts concerned with mineralogical and petrological sciences and related fields. Submitted papers must not have been published previously in any language, and author(s) must agree not to submit papers under review in the Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences to other journals. The editorial board reserves the right to reject any manuscript that is not of high quality and that does not comply with the journal format outlined below. The editorial board is keen to encourage the submission of articles from a wide range of researchers. Information on submitting manuscripts is also available from the journal web site(http://wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp/jampeg/jmps.htm).

GENERAL

The journal will consider both original articles and reviews written in English, as well as letters that contain important original content. The editorial board encourages authors to send submissions by e-mail (max: 20 MB) to jmps_editorial@spa.nifty. com, preferably saved in Windows OS. The title page, abstract, main text, references, and captions should be saved in a single Microsoft Word file (.doc). Figures and tables should be saved in separate files in PDF, EPS, AI, or GIF format. Authors should ensure that all figures and tables are high resolution and clearly legible. A list of attached files should be provided in the body of the e-mail.
Submission of hard copies of manuscripts via post is also accepted. Three sets of manuscripts (one original plus two photocopies), including figures and tables, should be sent to: The Editorial Office, Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences, c/o Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University, Aoba, Sendai 980-8578, Japan. To assist in streamlining the review process, the corresponding author should send the title, name(s) of author(s), and abstract to the editorial office by e-mail where possible.
When the manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author(s) should send the following items:
1. One printed final copy of the manuscript formatted according
to  the instructions below, as well as a copy in electronic format
   on  CD.
2. High-quality printed versions of figures and tables printed on
normal white paper (not recycled paper) using a quality laser
printer. Photographs should be printed as original glossy
    prints.

3. All figures saved in high-resolution PDF, EPS, AI, or GIF format.
Photographs and line art (or gray
scales should be saved at
350  dpi and 1200 dpi, respectively.

Original articles should be informative and concise, with no
more than the minimum necessary number of illustrations and
tables. The following length restrictions apply to manuscripts:
original articles should be less than 15 printed pages, letters
less than four pages, and reviews less than 15 pages.
Manuscripts should be organized as follows.

a.   Title

b.   Name(s), address(es), and e-mail address(es) of the author(s)
c.   Abstract (less than 400 words) with several key words
d.   Introduction
e.   Descriptions of materials, areas, and methods of study
f.    Results and data
g.   Interpretation and discussion
h.   Concluding remarks
i.    Acknowledgments
j.    References

k.   Table titles and footnotes
l.    Figure captions
m.  Tables

n.   Figures
Authors may omit some of the sections listed above if appropriate. The format requirements for review articles are flexible; potential contributors can obtain further details from the editorial office.

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

1.   Use Times or Times New Roman font (12 point).

2.   Mathematical variables should be typed in italics. Subscripts and superscripts should be formatted appropriately.

3.   The entire manuscript should be typewritten on A4 paper with 1.5 line spacing.

4.   Margins should be 2.5 cm on each side and 3 cm at the top and bottom of the page.

5.   Any annotations on the manuscript must be made in the text, not in the margins.

6.   Each page of the manuscript should be numbered at the center of the bottom of the page, starting with the title page.

7.   The metric system and S.I. units must be used throughout.

8.   Authors should use three orders of headings:
first-order headings (centered, bold, all capital letters), second-order headings (aligned left, bold), and third-order headings (following a paragraph indentation, bold, followed by a period).

TABLES

1.   All tables will be used for direct photo-offset reproduction. Authors should therefore prepare compact and clearly organized tables.

2.   Letters within tables should be in 9-point font. Do not use vertical lines in tables. The uppermost and lowermost horizontal lines in the table should be 1.5-point line weight, and intermediate lines should be 0.5 point.

3.   Tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals and cited in order of appearance in the text. The name of the author(s) and the table number should be written clearly at the page margin.

4.   Table titles and footnotes should be typewritten on a separate page.

5.   Each table should fit into either one or two columns of text, or, if necessary, into a landscape (horizontal) format.

FIGURES

1.   Sharply focused, glossy photographs are preferred. Original drawings in black ink on thick tracing paper will also be accepted.

2.   Simple patterns or areas of black and white are most effective. The use of gray scales commonly results in unacceptable moiré patterns or the appearance of dark grays as black; consequently, their use is not recommended. All figures should be submitted in PDF, EPS, AI, or GIF format. Figure details should be clearly readable and visible when the figures are reduced for printing.

3.   Figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals and cited in order of appearance in the text. The name of the author(s) and the figure number should be written clearly at the page margin.

4.   All details on the figures should be carefully examined because any errors detected at the galley proof stage must be corrected by the author at the author's expense.

5.   Figure captions should be typewritten on a separate page.

6.   Authors who wish to include color figures will pay the cost of printing as per the invoice from the printer, which is generally ¥60,000–80,000 per page.

REFERENCES

1.   References should be cited in the text using the family name of the author(s) and the year of publication. If two or more authors are cited within single parentheses, they should be listed chronologically. Examples are given  below.
…...the mixing property (Guggenheim, 1952) is treated ......
    …...according to Prigogine and Defay (1954), …...
    ……Margules et al. (1895) provided …...
References cited in the text should be listed in full and in alphabetical order at the end of the manuscript. However, chronological order takes precedence over alphabetical order when referring to multiauthored papers. Journal names should be written in full.

2.   References should be formatted as illustrated in the following examples:

PUBLISHING POLICY

Where necessary, the English of accepted manuscripts will be revised by the editorial board at no charge.

No charge is required for the publication of any article, letter, or review that complies with the page limits specified above. Authors will be required to pay the cost of printing extra pages.

It is journal policy not to supply free offprints but to ask the author(s) to purchase at least 50 offprints. This policy helps to maintain the sound finances required to ensure the publication of manuscripts. The price of offprints is based on the number of pages, tables, and figures. The editorial office will provide the author(s) with an estimate of the cost when the galley proofs are sent out. Offprints can be ordered in multiples of 50.

To minimize the workload of the editorial board, the submitted manuscript (including text, figures, and tables) is not returned to the author(s) upon acceptance of the manuscript. Please accept this inconvenience.

Any changes to figures or tables at the galley proof stage will cost a minimum of ¥3,000, depending on the scale of the changes; this cost will be met by the author(s). Major changes to the text at the galley proof stage will incur considerable costs that must be met by the author(s).

COPYRIGHT                        ã€€ã€€ã€€ã€€ã€€ã€€
The copyright of papers accepted for publication in the Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences belongs to Japan Association of Mineralogical Sciences. The copyright status form "Transfer of Copyright Agreement" must be signed and sent to the editorial office once the paper is accepted for publication.
DEPOSITORY AND SUPPLEMENTARY ITEMS

We accept depository and supplementary documents, tables and figures as supplementary material to be added to the journal web site. Color versions of the figures provided in the text are also accepted as supplementary material. These items can be deposited at the editorial office and need not comply with the above guidelines. Depository and supplementary items should be submitted in PDF (preferable), Word, Excel, EPS, AI, or Gif format, and submitted along with the manuscript. Please place each supplementary item in a separate file; a maximum of five files are allowed per manuscript. The size of any one file must be less than 5 MB, and the combined size of all files should be less than 10 MB. Please contact the editorial office for further information.
