About the journal

Journal of Hydroinformatics is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to the application of information technology in the widest sense to problems of the aquatic environment. It promotes Hydroinformatics as a cross-disciplinary field of study, combining technological, human-sociological and more general environmental interests, including an ethical perspective.

Instructions to Authors

Guidelines for Contributors

1. General Policy
Journal of Hydroinformatics is a peer-reviewed journal: it welcomes the submission of contributions, which may be in the form of papers, which must be in English, or in electronic form or hybrids of these forms. Contributions may describe original research, novel applications of hydroinformatics technologies, evaluations, including comparisons, of hydroinformatics products, developments in their enabling technologies, the reporting of experiences and related critical evaluation. The total length of a manuscript including figures, tables and references should not exceed 10,000 word equivalents. Multiple-part papers will not be considered unless they are all submitted together.

In addition Journal of Hydroinformatics encourages the submission of papers themselves in electronic format. These may include working systems and dynamic and/or coloured graphics, which will be published in the parallel Internet version of the journal: Journal of Hydroinformatics Online. References to supporting material that is freely available on other web sites is also permitted. For further details please consult one of the Editors.

Where the majority of a contribution is essentially electronic in form and not suitable for paper reproduction, such contributions must be accompanied by a text announcement that will be printed in the paper version of the journal. This announcement comprises the title, authors (and their addresses) plus an extended abstract describing the electronic material in 200-500 words.

Where requested to do so by the Editors, authors must revise their papers within one month of the request; otherwise the contribution will be considered withdrawn. No page charges apply for papers published in Journal of Hydroinformatics. Authors requiring the return of their manuscript or original material must make their request known as soon as possible, as they will normally be discarded one month after publication.

Manuscripts submitted to Journal of Hydroinformatics must not have been published, or simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere. Authors must obtain permission to incorporate any material protected by copyright where necessary.

Upon acceptance of a paper, authors will be asked to sign a Transfer of Copyright Agreement releasing copyright of the paper to IWA Publishing. Provision is made on the form for work performed for the United States Government (which is not subject to copyright restriction) and some United Kingdom Government work (which may be Crown Copyright) and in other extenuating circumstances

Proofs will be sent to the listed corresponding author. Any corrections must be returned within two days of receipt and should only cover typesetting errors. Proofs should be returned to Emma Gulseven at IWA Publishing in London.

2. Manuscript Submissions

Manuscripts should be submitted by e-mail to Emma Gulseven at IWA Publishing: egulseven@iwap.co.uk. A paper version of the manuscript should also be prepared as a hard copy is required once a manuscript is accepted for publication.

(a) Paper version

All pages in papers and items in other forms must be numbered consecutively and typed in double space.

Originals, not photocopies, of illustrations and other supporting material must be provided with the original copy of the manuscript. All supporting material, in whatever form, must be identified with the author's name and title of the contribution. In the case of material on paper, the identification should be on the reverse side.

Photographs must be on glossy paper: photocopies are not adequate for printing. Numbers and lettering must be printed, not handwritten. Colour plates can be accommodated in the journal, but authors will be charged the full cost for their inclusion.
Graphs and line drawings must be of good quality. Computer drawn graphics must be printed out on a high-resolution printer.

b) Electronic version

Initial submission should be by e-mail. If your paper is accepted you will be required to submit a hard copy and electronic version on disk or CD.

Although we can cope with most electronic formats, the following basic instructions should be kept in mind.
Please label all disks with:

the operating system
the word-processing package (including version number)
the filename of the article
the short title of the article and the authors' names
Please ensure that the typescript and disk versions of your paper are identical in content. In the event of differences between disk and hard copy, the hard copy will be considered as the definitive version.

Text files.
We can accept any of the popular word-processing packages for PC and the Apple Macintosh, e.g. Word, WordPerfect, etc. The main text should be typed flush left with no indents, double line space using the wrap-around feature. Insert one return between paragraphs, and a double return between paper title, authors' names, and addresses on the first page.

Graphic files.
We will accept any of the popular drawing programs for the Macintosh or PC. It is essential that a hard copy print of the scans be included. Illustrations should be logically named and saved as individual files. They should not be embedded within the typescript, but their approximate position should be indicated at the appropriate position in the text.

3. Article content and format

(a) Title page. The title of the paper should be as concise as possible. The title page or section must also state the names and full addresses of all authors. Telephone, fax, e-mail numbers and, if appropriate, web site identifications must be included for the corresponding author to whom proofs will be sent. A short title of not more than 80 letters and spaces must be provided for printed page headings.
(b) An Abstract of 100-200 words should appear under the authors' names and addresses in printed papers, briefly specifying the aims of the work, the methods used, the main results obtained and the conclusions drawn.
(c) Under the abstract up to 6 Key words should be listed in alphabetical order.
(d) Main text: for clarity this should normally be subdivided (in the case of printed papers) into: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, References A conclusions section is particularly valuable to readers and should always be included in papers. Do not number or letter section headings in printed contributions.
(e) Abbreviation and Notation. Nomenclature must be listed at the beginning of all printed paper contributions and must conform to the system of standard SI units. Acronyms and abbreviations must be spelled out in full at their first occurrence in the text and summarised at the end of the contribution. Write equations in dimensionless form or in metric units.
(f) References: citations in text. Use surname of author and year of publication: Jones (1982) or (Jones, 1982). Insert initials only if there are two different authors with the same surname and same year of publication. Two or more years in parentheses following an author's name are cited in ascending order of year, and two or more references published in the same year by the same author are differentiated by letters a, b, c, etc. For example: Brown (1969, 1972, 1973a, b). Different references cited together should be in date order, for example: (Smith, 1959; Thomson and Jones, 1982; Green, 1990).
An original publication and subsequent publication of the same work used in reference should be separated by a "/" symbol, while a "//" symbol should be used to separate a reference to a publication not in English and its English translation. Page numbers in such different publications should be distinguished similarly if reference to the original is considered desirable.
(g) List of references. References should be listed alphabetically at the end of contributions and in the case of printed papers should conform to the following styles for a journal or book reference.
Asano, T., Maeda, M. & Takaki, M. 1996 Wastewater reclamation and reuse in Japan: overview and implementation examples. Wat. Sci. Technol. 34(11), 211-226
