Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ics. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (+1 434 817 2040 ext. 167), e-mail (support@scholarone.com) or at http://mcv3support.custhelp.com. If you cannot submit online, please contact Professor Tony Rawlings by telephone +44 1606354535 or by e-mail TonyRawlings@aol.com.
Editorial policy
Manuscripts submitted to the journal will be evaluated by at least two reviewers, one of whom will be an Editorial Board member. The identity of reviewers is confidential. The Editors aim to return an initial decision on a manuscript within 4-6 weeks of submission. No charges are made for submissions nor fees paid to reviewers. With regard to the European legislation on cosmetics, papers implying the use of animal testing will not be considered for publication. An acknowledgement of funding is included to address any potential conflicts of interest. In all clinical studies informed consent must be obtained.
Manuscript preparation
Manuscripts will be accepted in either French or English and should be double-spaced with 30 mm margins. The final manuscript should be accompanied by a file description form available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/fdf.pdf.
Title page This should contain the title of the paper, the author's names, institutions and addresses (including telephone and facsimile numbers). If the paper was presented at a scientific meeting, the date and place of the meeting must be given. Correspondence will be addressed to the first named author.
Synopsis A 200-300 word summary should be provided in both English and French. This should include new discoveries, results and conclusions which are presented in the paper. Please contact the Editors in the first instance for help with translation.
Keywords Up to five keywords or phrases should be submitted in English for indexing purposes.
Headings and paragraphs Main and subsidiary headings should be distinguished. Neither headings nor paragraphs should be numbered.
Illustrations, figures, tables and photographs Tables should be numbered using roman numerals, e.g. Table I, Table II, etc. All other illustrations should be numbered using Arabic numerals, e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. but should be referred to in the text as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. All diagrams, charts, graphs, etc. should be submitted in twice the final size required. All letters and numbers must be large enough to withstand the reduction of 50%. Legends to all figures and tables should be complete enough to be understood without reference to the text. Photographs should be well-contrasted.
We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp
It is the policy of the International Journal of Cosmetic Science for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the Internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/SN_Sub2000_F_CoW.pdf
In the event that an author is not able to cover the costs of reproducing colour figures in colour in the printed version of the journal, the International Journal of Cosmetic Science offers authors the opportunity to reproduce colour figures in colour for free in the online version of the article (but they will still appear in black and white in the print version). If an author wishes to take advantage of this free colour-on-the-web service, they should liaise with the Editorial Office to ensure that the appropriate documentation is completed for the Publisher.
If you are unable to access the Internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact Krystal Woods at the address below and she will be able to email or FAX a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below:
Mr. Chris Burton Wiley-Blackwell 101 George Street Edinburgh EH2 3ES E-mail: ics@edn.blackwellpublishing.com
Any article received by Wiley-Blackwell with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.

Copyright
Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it presents original, unpublished work, not under consideration for publication elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to assign the Publisher exclusive licence to publish their paper if and when the article is published. To enable this each paper should be accompanied by an exclusive licence form. It is a condition of publication that authors grant the Publisher the exclusive licence to publish all articles including abstracts. Papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless the exclusive licence to publish has been granted. To assist authors an exclusive licence form is available from the editorial office or by clicking here.
Pre-Submission English Language Editing Services
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found by clicking HERE. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
Note to NIH Grantees
Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley-Blackwell will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicly available 12 months after publication. For further information, see www.wiley.com/nihmandate
Early View
The International Journal of Cosmetic Science is covered by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing's Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
Online Open
OnlineOpen is an optional pay-to-publish service from Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscript to become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download) via the Blackwell Synergy website. Each OnlineOpen article will be subject to a one-off fee of $3,000 to be met by or on behalf of the Author in advance of publication. Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of charge. The print version of the article will also be branded as OnlineOpen and will draw attention to the fact that the paper can be downloaded for free via the Blackwell Synergy service.
Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the combined payment and copyright licence form (Please note this form is for use with OnlineOpen material ONLY.)
Once complete this form should be sent to the Editorial Office along with the rest of the manuscript materials at the time of acceptance or as soon as possible after that (preferably within 24 hours to avoid any delays in processing). Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to.
The copyright statement for OnlineOpen authors will read:
