About the journal
Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering provides an international forum for the discussion of conceptual ideas and methods for the practical solution of applied inverse problems. The journal aims to address the needs of practising engineers and to serve as a focal point for the quick communication of ideas. Topics include:
- Shape design: determination of shape, size and location of domains (shape identification or optimization in acoustics, aerodynamics, electromagnets, etc; detection of voids and cracks).
- Material properties: determination of physical properties of media.
- Boundary values/initial values: identification of the proper boundary conditions and/or initial conditions (tomographic problems involving X-rays, ultrasonics, optics, thermal sources etc; determination of thermal, stress/strain, electromagnetic, fluid flow etc. boundary conditions on inaccessible boundaries; determination of initial chemical composition, etc.).
- Forces and sources: determination of the unknown external forces or inputs acting on a domain (structural dynamic modification and reconstruction) and internal concentrated and distributed sources/sinks (sources of heat, noise, electromagnetic radiation, etc.).
- Governing equations: inference of analytic forms of partial and/or integral equations governing the variation of measured field quantities.
Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering is a unique source of information in this new field that will offer researchers the opportunity to publish their ideas in a single journal. Papers should provide non-trivial examples of practical applications. Multidisciplinary applied papers are particularly welcome.
Instructions to Authors

1. Introduction
It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. Failure to follow them may result in your paper being delayed and the effectiveness of the search capabilities offered by electronic delivery will depend upon the care used by authors in preparing their manuscripts. Therefore, contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.
2. Submitting a Paper to Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering
Papers for consideration should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief at the address below:
G. S. Dulikravich, Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Florida International University, Miami, FL 33174, USA; Email: dulikrav@fiu.edu.
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically. Electronic submissions should be sent as email attachments using a standard program, such as MSWORD, LaTeX or PDF. If email submission is not possible, please send an electronic version on disc along with three paper copies together with one set of high quality figures for reproduction.
When the accepted paper is submitted in final form, please send two paper copies and a copy on disc - see Electronic Processing.
Please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to the Editor-in-Chief.
3. General Guidelines
Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering, that they have not been published already, and that they are not under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs that Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering incurs and their papers will not be published.
Contributions to Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees.
There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. Authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary on scientific, and not merely cosmetic, grounds. In addition, authors may pay to publish colour illustrations, but please consult the publisher regarding cost before submission. Figures which appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.
Writing your paper
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms must not be used.
- Each paper should have three to six keywords. In addition to keywords, authors are encouraged to provide two to six 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification codes.
- Papers are accepted only in English.
- Manuscripts should be typed on single sides of good quality white A4 or 8.5?1 inch paper, double-spaced throughout including the reference section, with wide (30 mm or 1 inch) margins.
- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of manuscripts.
- Abstracts of 100-150 words are required for all papers submitted and should precede the text of a paper - see Notes on Style.
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual sheets); figure caption(s) (as a list).
- Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
- Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
- When using a word that is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark authors must use the symbol ?or TM, or alternatively a footnote can be inserted using the wording below:
This article includes a word that is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark. Its inclusion does not imply it has acquired for legal purposes a non-proprietary or general significance, nor is any other judgement implied concerning its legal status.
4. Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
Exceptions are made for authors of Crown or US Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.
For details on copyright permission click here. Copies of the permission letters should be sent with the manuscript to the Editors.

6. Early Electronic Offprints
Corresponding authors can now receive their article by email as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the Journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the Journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.
