About the journal
Anthropological Science (AS) publishes research papers, review articles, brief communications, and material reports in physical anthropology and related disciplines. The scope of AS encompasses all aspects of human and primate evolution and variation. We welcome research papers in molecular and morphological variation and evolution, genetics and population biology, growth and development, biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, ecology and behavioral biology, osteoarcheology and prehistory, and other disciplines relating to the understanding of human evolution and the biology of the human condition.
Anthropological Science is the official journal of the Anthropological Society of Nippon (ASN) which, founded in 1884, continues to be the center for anthropological research in Japan. Society members have traditionally had a strong background in studies concerning Japan and the other Asian-Pacific regions. More recently, in addition to this tradition, members are actively promoting research in a worldwide perspective with increasing international exposure. In 1993, Anthropological Science succeeded Jinruigaku Zasshi (or the Journal of the Anthropological Society of Nippon), as the official journal of ASN. Our aim is to continue to serve as a significant outlet for quality research regarding the evolutionary history of human populations, not only of the Japanese archipelago but also in broader Asian-Pacific and worldwide contexts.
Instructions to Authors
Anthropological Science is the official journal of the Anthropological Society of Nippon. It publishes original and review articles, brief communications, material reports, and book reviews. Printed issues are published three times a year, while on-line uploading (www.jstage.jst.go.jp or www.nacos.com/asn/as.html) is scheduled as frequently as possible. We welcome contributions from all over the world, from both society members and non-members alike. Currently, there are no page charges for length, although the Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to instruct authors to shorten manuscripts as considered necessary. Submitted papers must be based on original research, and not published or under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submitted papers must conform in style to the instructions outlined below. When these conditions are not met, or other inadequacies are apparent, the Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to reject manuscripts without review. Manuscripts are handled through the peer review process and edited by one of the associate editors or the Editor-in-Chief. Manuscripts are sent out for peer review to two or more reviewers, often to members of the Editorial Board.
Initial submission
Manuscripts of original and review articles, brief communications, and material reports should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief. Book reviews should be sent to the book review editor (see below).
Initial electronic submission by email attachment files is preferred and highly recommended.

1) The title page, abstract, text, and figure legends must be contained in a single Word file, readable in Windows. Tables and figures may be sent as separate files, or can be contained in the Word file.
2) Tables can be sent in either Word or Excel files, readable in Windows. Table titles and footnotes should appear above and below the body of the table, respectively.
3) Figures should be sent in jpeg format. Initially submitted figures do not need to be in high resolution, but the necessary details must be readable in screen size.
4) When including tables and figures in the Word file that contains the text and figure legends, do not embed them within the text, but place all tables and figures after the figure legends, at the end of the Word file.
5) In addition to the above required files, the submission of a single pdf file of the entire manuscript is welcomed.
Initial postal submission is accepted, if and when e-mail submission is not possible.

1) Submit one original and one copy of the entire manuscript that includes the title page, abstract, text, figure legends, tables, and figures.
2) Send a cd-rom or diskette, readable in Windows, containing the title page, abstract, text, figure legends, tables, and any of the figures available in jpeg format.
Submission after acceptance
Upon acceptance of the paper, the corresponding author is required to submit the final accepted version of the manuscript.
1) Submit two hard copies of the entire accepted manuscript. The contents of these must be identical with those of the final electronic files.
2)
Hard copy originals of the figures must be of high resolution and of sufficient quality for printing, since they may themselves be used for reproduction. These should be sent in approximately the size that they are to be printed. The editor reserves the right to rescale figures as necessary.
3)
Send a cd-rom or diskette, readable in windows, containing the final accepted version of the title page, abstract, text, and figure legends in Word, and tables in Word or Excel. When available, send electronic files of photographs and illustrations in 300 dpi resolution at the size to be printed, and similarly in 600 to 1200 dpi for line drawings.
4)
Copy editing adjustments will be made to the accepted manuscripts. During proof reading, the corresponding author is required to check for any undesired changes that may have inadvertently occurred during copy editing.
Manuscript style
1) Manuscripts should be formatted or typed double-spaced, throughout, at A4 (297 x 210 mm) size, or the nearest local equivalent, using approximately 25 mm (one inch) margins on all sides. Page 1 should contain the article title, author name(s), affiliation(s) and address(es), and suggested running title not exceeding 50 characters (including spaces). The complete mailing address, telephone number, facsimile number and e-mail address of the corresponding author should be indicated. Page 2 of original and review articles, brief communications, and material reports should contain a short abstract of about 200 to 300 words. A list of up to five key words should be provided below the abstract.
2) Text footnotes are not allowed.
3) Tables. All tables must be cited in the text. Number the tables consecutively with Arabic numerals, such as Table 3, in order of appearance in the text. Supply a short explanatory title above the body of the table, and type table footnotes lettered a, b, c, etc., below the body of the table. Do not use vertical rules.
4) Figures. All figures must be cited in the text. Number the figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, such as Figure 3, in order of appearance in the text. Dimensions of each illustration, photograph, or composite imagery should be no larger than the size of the manuscript page, and must be submitted complete and in final form. Photographs should be glossy prints or of equivalent quality. Figure legends are to be typed, double-spaced, consecutively on paper sheets separate from the figures themselves. In both the text and figure legends, always spell out Figure fully; i.e. do not use the abbreviation Fig.
5) Electronic supplementary materials are not accepted, but concise appendices can be part of the printed issues, J-STAGE pdf version, and supplementary material of the J-STAGE full text HTML version.
6) References. Only references cited in the abstract, text, tables and figure legends should be listed. Suffixes a, b, c, etc. should be used following the date to distinguish two or more works by the same author(s) in the same year. References should be cited in the text by surname and year in parentheses, in chronological order, such as:
...according to Ohtsuka (1986), Ishida (1988, 2002), Brown (1990), Ishida and Dodo (2000a, b)...
...were demonstrated (Dodo and Hanihara, 1988a, b; Suwa, 1990; Brown, 1992, 2002; Dodo, 1994)...
Where there are three or more coauthors, only the first author's name is given in the text followed by ‘et al.’, such as …Dodo et al. (2002)… or …(Dodo et al., 2002)...
List references at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order by author, and in chronological order when there are two or more references of the same author(s). References with three or more authors with the same first author should be listed in chronological order, regardless of the names of the other authors. Do not abbreviate journal titles or publisher names. Spell these out fully. Style and punctuation are illustrated by the following examples.

Book reviews
Send both solicited and non-solicited book reviews to the book review editor.
1) Manuscript style should be comparable with the above, but with no title, abstract, running title, or key words. Tables and figures are not allowed, but references can be used and listed as necessary. The first lines of the book review must spell out the title, author(s), publisher, year, ISBN number, number of pages, and price. The reviewer’s name, affiliation, and address should be given at the end. Unsolicited reviews must be submitted together with a copy of the reviewed book.

The book review editor reserves the right to ask for substantial changes to the manuscript, or reject the submission.
Limit of revision period
Authors who have been requested to revise their manuscript should send the revision to the handling editor within one year of reception of the editorial decision. Otherwise, the submitted manuscript is regarded as withdrawn.
Reprints and other charges
Reprints may be ordered at cost. Authors are charged for additional costs incurred by final manuscripts lacking electronic files, figures redrawn due to bad quality, and excessive changes in proof. Costs for color pages will be charged to the author(s).

Papers published in Anthropological Science become the permanent property of the Anthropological Society of Nippon (ASN). No part of this journal may be reproduced in any form or by any means without permission from ASN. Authors, however, do not need to obtain permission to make copies of their own papers, or to use their original photographs and figures in their own future work.
