Interest in phylogenetic relations and in reconstructing the history of life is experiencing a dramatic renaissance, perhaps comparable only to that of the Darwinian revolution near the turn of the last century. To further encourage this renaissance, the new Zoology strives to provide a common forum where all aspects of zoology are presented from an explicitly comparative perspective. The journal invites papers that take a comparative and experimental approach to evolution and development, to theoretical evolutionary biology, to evolutionary and physiological ecology, to functional morphology, to immunology, and to comparative and behavioral physiology (including endocrinology). By integrating these different branches of research, we intend to promote an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of animal form, function, development and evolution. The new Zoology aspires to become an important organ of the internatinal scientific community of zoologists by providing highest international standards, short communication and publication times, and an attractive presentation of science.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted to the editorial office or to one of the editors. Submit the original manuscript and original prints of all illustrations, as well as two review copies and a disk copy. We strongly encourage e-mail submission of manuscripts preferably in pdf-format.

General instructions: The manuscript should conform to Zoology style with respect to use of capital and lower case letters in headings and should be submitted exactly as it is to appear in print. It should consist of the following subdivisions, each prepared as a unit on separate sheets:
Title page (p. 1), Summary + 5 key words (p. 2), Introduction (p. 3), Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Literature Cited, Tables, Figure Legends, Figures.

The entire manuscript should be typed double-spaced on bond or heavy-bodied paper in letter or A4 format with 1d (2.5 cm) margins. Number the manuscript pages consecutively beginning with the title page. Keep in mind the following guidelines:

  • Do not divide words at the end of a line.
  • Do not justify right margin of text.
  • Do not begin sentences with abbreviations.
  • The word "figure" is not abbreviated in the text, except when appearing in parentheses:
    (Fig. 2); (Figs. 4-6).
  • The spelling of nontechnical terms should be that recommended in the current Webster's International Dictionary.
  • Italics and boldface must be so indicated.
  • Always spell out numbers when they stand as the first word in a sentence; do not follow such numbers with abbreviations.

Title page: The title page should contain:

Complete first names, surname, affiliated institution, and address of each author.
Full address of corresponding author, including telephone number, fax number, and E-mail address.
Number of text pages, figures, graphs, and charts, each on a separate line.
Abbreviated title (running headline) not to exceed 48 characters and spaces.

References: In the text, references to the literature should be cited chronologically by author's surname followed by year of publication Cassone (1990), Trueb and Hanken (1992), Wittmann et al. (1993); or (Cassone, 1990; Trueb and Hanken, 1992; Wittmann et al., 1993).

Unpublished data should be avoided. If the comments of a personal communication are necessary to the study, this reference should be accompanied by a written statement from the referred person that agrees with the author's statement.

When references are made to more than one paper by an author published in the same year, they should be designated in the text as (O'Connor 1975a, b) and in the literature list as follows:

O'Connor, R.J. 1975a. Growth and metabolism in nestling passerines. Symp. Zool. Soc. Lond. 35: 277-306.
O'Connor, R.J. 1975b. Nestling thermolysis and developmental change in body temperature. Comp. Biochem. Physiol. 52A: 419-42.

The literature list must be arranged alphabetically
by author's surname as follows: Author's name (or names), year of publication, complete title, volume, and inclusive pages in the following style:

o Journal article
Verbeek, N.A.M. 1995. Body temperature and growth of nestling northwestern crows, Corvus caurinus. Can. J. Zool. 73: 1019-1023.
Mart韓ez del Rio, C., H.G. Baker and I. Baker. 1992. Ecological and evolutionary implications of digestive processes: bird preferences and the sugar constituents of floral nectar and fruit pulp. Experimentia 48: 544-551.

o Book
Stearns, S.C. and R.F. Hoekstra. 2000. Evolution. Oxford University Press, Oxford.

o Book chapter
Bartholomew, G.A. and D.L. Goldstein. 1984. The energetics of development in a very large altricial bird,
the brown pelican. In: Respiration and Metabolism of Embryonic vertebrates (R. S. Seymour, ed.). Dr. W. Junk Publishers, Dordrecht, pp. 347-357.

References to papers by two authors follow those by the senior author. If there is more than one paper with a second author, these are listed alphabetically. References by three or more authors follow those by the senior author (including two-author references) and are arranged chronologically independent of the order of the second and third authors.
Abbreviations of journal titles should follow those used in the World List of Scientific Periodicals (Information at the web at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/JAS.htm). Non-English titles should be in the original language unless a different alphabet is used. Please follow appropriate spelling and capitalization. Include accents and umlauts. In the Literature Cited section the year must never be abbreviated.

Tables: All tables must be cited in the text. Tabular material should be simple and uncomplicated, with as few vertical and horizontal rules as possible. Indicate in the margin where the tables are to appear in the text. Table titles should be complete but brief. Information other than that defining the data should be presented in footnotes. Footnotes to a table should be typed directly beneath the table and numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.

Figures: All figures must be cited in the text. Indicate in the margin where the figures are to appear in the text. Photographs or drawings mounted together as a group may be given separate figure numbers. However, if they are closely related it is preferable to assign them a single figure number and letter the individual prints.

Metric system: The metric system should be used for all measurements, weight, etc. Temperatures should be expressed in degrees Celsius (centigrade). Metric abbreviations should be expressed in lower-case without periods. Units must follow SI-System.

Illustrations

Original illustrations and two review copies should be submitted with the manuscript. Illustrations should be submitted as original drawings, high quality photographic prints, or on disk (refer to the section below concerning electronic submission of articles). The reverse side of each figure should have the author's name, figure number, top side of illustration, and "ReviewCopy" or "Original" indicated. Figures must be submitted in complete and finished form accompanied by a descriptive legend.

All illustrations should be lettered and numbered
with printed paste-on, transfer, or computer-generated labels. Labeling should be done directly on the drawing or photographic print using an appropriate contrast between the label and its background. Figures, including charts and graphs, must be numbered consecutively.

Photographs and micrographs: Photographs and electron micrographs should have the desired final size that permits direct reproduction. They should be either one column in width (8.3 cm) or two columns (17.1 cm). The vertical dimensions can vary but must not exceed 24 cm. These dimensions include any lettering of the axes. The final size of letters, arrows or numbers must not be smaller than 2 mm.

Photographic prints submitted for reproduction must be of adequate contrast and if multiple prints are included in a single figure, they should be of uniform tone.
Mounted photomicrographs and illustrations should be attached to strong bristol board using appropriate dry-mounting materials.

Line drawings: Figures should be drawn with black ink on medium-weight white paper or light-weight artboard. Photographic prints may be submitted in lieu of original drawings. Line drawings may also be submitted on disk.

Color Prints: Color prints will only be printed free of charge if the editor believes they considerably enhance the scientific presentation of the paper, otherwise a charge of 500.- E per figure will be made.

Cover illustrations will be taken from, or be associated with, an article which appears in the journal. Authors wishing to submit a potential cover illustration should send a photograph, together with a short explanation, to the editor at the time of submission.

Movies/videos: Include copies of movies or videos with the original manuscript for on-line publication. These should be in quick time format (as extension that identifies the file .mov).

Electronic submission of articles

For the submission of manuscripts and for processing of accepted manuscripts, electronic versions are preferred and should be accompanied by an exactly matching hardcopy.

Any of the following storage media are acceptable:
3.5" high-density disk in IBM MSDOS, Windows, or Macintosh fomat, CD-ROM or ZIPdisk (100MB/250 MB). Manuscripts prepared with any common word-processing software are acceptable, Microsoft Word 7.0 or higher is preferred. Manuscripts prepared using desktop-publishing software should be exported to a word-processing format prior to submission.

Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations: Submit illustration files separately from text files. Files for full color images must be in a CMYK color space. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS formats. Files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).

Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 dpi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 dpi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

On-line submission: On-line submission of manuscripts via e-mail is encouraged. File format should be the same as for disk submission. Authors wishing to submit manuscripts through the internet should contact the editorial office for specific guidelines.

Proofs and reprints

Proofs: The authors will be asked to review manuscript proofs prior to publication. Page and illustration proofs will be sent to the author in a PDF file format via the internet. All corrections should be clearly marked directly on page proofs. Revisions other than corrections of printing errors will be charged to the corresponding author.

Reprints: Authors will receive 25 reprints free of chrage. Additional reprints may be purchased at prices quoted on the reprint order form which accompanies the proofs. Reprint orders should be returned with the proofs. It is not possible to place additional orders at a later date.

Policy on animal treatment

All animal experimentation reported in Zoology must have been conducted in accordance with the pertinent national statements regarding the care and use of animals in the country of residence of the principal author. In submitting a paper to Zoology each author will be assumed to have conscientiously abided by these principles. Authors should provide permit numbers and authorizing institution in the Materials and Methods section.

Ethical note: Where ethical considerations arise from the study, these should be addressed in the Methods, either in the main Methods section itself (when the additional discussion is relatively minor), or in a separate section of the Methods headed Ethical note. Any ethical implications of the experimental design and procedures should be identified, and any licences acquired to carry out the work specified. Procedures that were taken to minimize the welfare impact on subjects, including choice of sample sizes, use of pilot tests and predetermined rules for intervention should be described. Any steps taken to enhance the welfare of subjects (e.g. through 'environmental enrichment') should also be indicated. If the study involved keeping wild animals in captivity, state for how long the animals were captive and whether, where and how they were returned to the wild at the end of the study. Manuscripts that describe experiments which cause cruelty or unnecessary pain to animals will not be published in Zoology.

Miscellaneuos

The editor will not accept manuscripts and illustrations for review that are not in proper finished form.
No published material may be reproduced or published elsewhere without written consent of the publisher and the author. All statements (or omissions) in published manuscripts are the responsibility of the authors.

Call for papers

We invite manuscripts on any aspect of zoology so long as the manuscript has a strong comparative and/or experimental component. Our goal is to make your results known to the scientific community as rapidly and effectively as possible. Four printed issues of ZOOLOGY are published each year. Beginning with the year 2001, an electronic version of the journal will also be available on the internet. We offer the following variety of formats: short reviews (10-12 printed pages), contributed papers (8-10 printed pages), a forum session (2-5 printed pages), news, web-watch, and comments. We aim to present your research most efficiently, and we can accommodate to formats suitable for specific publication purposes. Free color plates will be available at the editors' discretion. With a new and ambitious advisory board, an efficient scheme of manuscript flow, electronic communication, and a professional editorial office, publication time will be 3 months after acceptance of the manuscript for publication. The appealing new layout of the journal, a promotion campaign targeted especially at colleagues in the field, free e-mail alert of the latest table of contents, an improved accessibility of the journal, and on-line publication will provide a high visibility to the new ZOOLOGY.
