Instructions to Authors
General Remarks, Publishing Rights
Manuscripts for publication should be submitted in quadruplicate (accompanied by one complete set of the original figures and tables as well as 3 copies) to the publishers:
S. Karger GmbH Franziska Lang P.O. Box D–79095 Freiburg (Germany) Tel. +49 761 45 207 26 Fax +49 761 45 207 14 E-Mail f.lang@karger.de
Contributions are classified as original papers, review articles, short communications, casuistic contributions, for the practitioner, forum, Articles and Books. The manuscript should be submitted in quadruplicate, ready for printing. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a disk exactly matching the printed version (preferred Microsoft Word on 3.5-inch MS-DOS formatted disk) and with figures suitable for reproduction.
Acceptance of a manuscript is based on the evaluation by several referees, each scientific contribution is ‘peer reviewed’. The publisher reserves the right to edit the manuscript and decide on the layout. In a covering letter all authors of a manuscript must confirm by their signature that the submitted paper, or parts of it (with the exception of communications for congresses) was not published previously nor that it is under simultaneous consideration for publication elsewhere. The authors are furthermore asked to confirm that all of them have read the manuscript and that they agree to have it published in the present form.
It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables etc. from other publishers.
Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, all usage rights will be retained by the publisher. The assignment of the usage rights applies to all print media as well as electronic offline and online media, including the internet and data bases/data carriers of any kind. The publication, or parts of it, may not be translated into other languages, or reproduced by any mechanical or electronic means (including photocopying, recording and microcopying), or stored in a retrieval system without the publisher’s written permission.
Registered trade names must be marked with the superscript registration symbol®. It is the sole responsibility of the author to ensure that this rule is followed properly.
Manuscripts
Review articles and original papers should not exceed 10 text pages.
Short communications adhere to the framework of original papers and should not exeed 3 text pages, 5–10 references and a maximum of 1 figure and 1 table (optionally either 2 figures or tables). Short communications should focus on the result of scientific studies, also in the form of so-called provisional reports as well as new scientific approaches either experimental or clinical. It is the publisher’s and the editorial staff’s aim to manage the publishing of such articles within the shortest period of time possible. It goes without saying that the authors are at liberty to hand in a complete version at al later date.
Casuistic contributions submitted for publication should be of obvious relevance to current therapeutic practice. The following points should be included: 1. description of the treated disorder, 2. description of all diagnostic assessments, 3. hypothetical model of underlying conditions (behavioral analysis), 4. principles of intervention, 5. outcome, 6. conclusions. Innovative interventions or modifications of established behavioral interventions should be emphasized. The case study should also describe the emotional processes necessary for and resulting from successful therapeutic intervention. The report should include specified efficacy measurements at various points in the course of therapy (prior to initial intervention / after the last intervention / process-oriented). The citation of 5 relevant sources is sufficient.
The manuscripts should be typed in a spacing of 1½ lines with adequately wide margins (left and right). They should be consecutively numbered (including front page and reference list). Each additional complete or partial page to print is charged to the author.
Arrangements
We recommend the following division:
Front page with title and short title in German and English; authors’ names, institute name in the native language of the authors.
Summary and Key Words in German and English; Summaries should not exceed 20 typewritten lines. Summaries should not include any references, tables, figures, references to figures and tables and general statements. Each article should have 3–5 key words.
Text pages should be divided into Introduction, Materials and Methods (optionally Patients and Methods), Results, Discussion.
Please use abbreviations as economically as possible. Special abbreviations should be written in full when first mentioned followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, e.g. adenosine monophosphate (AMP).
Acknowledgements should be placed directly after the text and before the list of references.
The list of references should include only the publications cited in the text. The references should be arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s names. In each reference all authors should be denoted; the abbreviation ‘et al.’ should be avoided. Reference numbers will not be printed. Within the text the name(s) of one or two author(s) should be denoted in square brackets (without initials). In the case of three or more authors the ‘et al.’ notation should be used after the first author’s name. It is recommended to quote only articles which have been either published already or accepted for publication. Please avoid passages like ‘preparation’ or ‘personal communication’.
