About the journal

 UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY

Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations is the official journal of the Society of Urologic Oncology. This new journal combines the original research from Urologic Oncology with the comprehensive single topic overviews from Seminars in Urologic Oncology. The combined publication delivers timely clinical research and up-to-date comprehensive reviews of critical scientific relevance. Each issue comprises original articles and reviews including an in depth Seminar examining a specific clinical dilemma. All articles are of significant interest to all clinicians involved in the practice of urologic oncology including urologists, oncologist and radiologists.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted to Michael J. Droller, M.D., UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY, Editorial Office, Department of Urology, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Box 1272, One Gustave L. Levy Place, New York, NY 10029-6574.

UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY unites basic and clinical research subjects. Original articles which address any aspect of urologic oncology are invited. Review articles will be solicited, although authors are invited to inquire about given topics. A small section, Terms and Techniques, is included to provide readers with descriptions of technical procedures used in the laboratory. In addition, new clinical procedures will be included.

All articles will be peer reviewed with the understanding that they are original work, are not being considered for publication elsewhere, and have not been previously published. Letters to the Editor are encouraged. They should be single-spaced and will be published as space permits.

Length and Format

1) Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 inch bond paper. The original copy should have a face sheet upon which is recorded the title, the authors' names with one degree each, institutional affiliations, a complete address, phone and fax numbers for the individual to whom correspondence should be directed, and a statement concerning any financial relationship between any of the authors and the subject matter. Three copies of the manuscript should accompany the original.

2) A summary, not to exceed 250 words, of the methods and materials, the results and conclusions should appear below the authors' names. Acknowledgements, tabular material, figure legends, and references should betyped on separate sheets.

3) All tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals and have descriptive titles. Footnotes to the text should be numbered consecutively with superior Arabic numerals.

4) Delay in review can be avoided if authors not familiar with the English language will acquire the assistance of an expert for review prior to submission.

5) The system used for tumor classification should be referenced. Acronyms and other abbreviations should be first defined and then remain consistent throughout the manuscript. Generic names should be followed by the correct chemical name when first used; trade names should not be used. Normal values should be given for all laboratory studies that are unique, vary according to the technique used (the technique should also be mentioned) or are important in interpreting results and drawing conclusions.

6) Illustrations
For line artwork, submit black-ink drawings of professional quality, or glossies of originals. Duplicates may be photocopies. On the back of each illustration, give the first author's name, number of the figure, and indication of "top." Descriptions of the legends to figures must match the information in the illustrations, and must be typed on a separate sheet of paper.

7) Color art
Color will be printed at the author's expense. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the exact charge will be determined by the publisher.

8) Proofs and reprints
The corresponding author will receive proofs, which should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Proofs must be carefully checked by the authors, as it is their responsibility to see that all errors are corrected and queries from editors answered. To order reprints use order form and price list accompanying proofs.

9) Copyright
Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under the U.S. Copyright Law.

10) Revised manuscripts
Four copies should be returned to the Editorial Office along with a detailed description of the changes made. If changes have been suggested but not followed, defense of this option should be included.

11) Approval by the Institutional Internal Review Board
This must be stated in the Methods and Materials section. The same is true for institutional rules concerning animal studies. These requirements should be consistent with the rules of the country of origin.

12) References
References should follow the style suggested by the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. List all authors when six or fewer; when seven or more, list the first three and add et al. Authors are responsible for completeness and accuracy of all references. Citation in the text is by number in brackets, i.e., [1], corresponding to the numbered reference list at the end of the article. Periodical abbreviations should follow those given by Index Medicus. References should be styled as follows:

Journal
Sandberg AA, Truc-Carel C (1987): The cytogenetics of solid tumors. Relation to diagnosis, classification and pathology. Cancer 59:387-395.

Book
Katz DH: Lymphocyte Differentiation, Recognition and Regulation. New York, Academic Press, 1977.

Chapter in a book
Ceppellini R, Curtoni ES, Mattiuz PL, Miggiano V, Scudeller G, Serra A: Genetics of leukocyte antigens: a family study of segregation and linkage. In Curtoni ES, Mattiuz PL, Tosi RM (eds): Histocompatability 1967. Copenhagen, Munksgaard, 1967.

13) Computer Disks
Send 3 hard copies when first submitting your paper for acceptance and review. When your paper has been referred, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make certain that the disk and hard copy match exactly (otherwise the diskette version will prevail). Specify what software was used, including with release, e.g., WordPerfect 6.1. Specify what computer was used (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.). The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given in the Information for Authors. The file should be single spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-the-line feature, i.e., returns at the end of paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element, such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table call outs. Be sure to keep a back-up disk for reference and safety.

After your manuscript has been accepted, please submit your word-processing disk, three copies of your manuscript, one original set of figures, and three photocopies (if photocopies are not legible, send three original sets) of the figures to the UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY editorial office at the above address.

GUIDELINES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF ELECTRONIC MANUSCRIPTS

Keyboarding of Manuscripts

1) Our equipment can handle the following programs (any versions) in their "native" format:

IBM/compatible
DisplayWrite, Q & A Write, Executive Writer, Samna, Leading Edge, Spellbinder, MicroSoft Word, Volkswriter, Multimate, WordPerfect, Office Writer, WordStar, PC Write, WordStar 2000, PFS: Write, Xywrite, PFS: Professional

Macintosh
MacWrite, MicroSoft Word, WordPerfect

Other word processors should be saved as ASCII files. For files saved as ASCII, consult the editorial office regarding the keyboarding of attributes such as bold, underline, superscript, subscript, etc.

2) All design considerations for typefaces, page layout, and artwork will be handled by the publisher after receipt of the electronic manuscript. There is no need for the author to input special typesetting codes.

3) Be especially sure to distinguish between the letters O and I and the numbers 0 and 1, respectively.

4) A "hard return" is what results from tapping the keyboard's ENTER key. Use a hard return only to end a paragraph, or for titles, subheads, separate items on a list, etc. Rely on the word processor's word wrap ("soft return") within paragraphs, list items, etc.

5) Use your word processor's capabilities for the following text attributes: bold, superscript, underline and italic, strikeout, subscript. Text that will be italic in published form may be keyboarded italic or underlined.

6) Do not use your word processor's hyphenation capabilities, or its ability to right justify text. Use two hyphens for long dashes.

7) In tables, use only tabs, not spaces, to align columns.

8) If you use MicroSoft Word, do not use the "fast save" feature when saving your document.

Organization and Delivery of Electronic Files

1) Manuscripts may be submitted on 3.5" or 5.25" diskettes, which must be either MS-DOS or Macintosh format. The author should retain copies of all files as backup.

2) Diskettes and accompanying manuscripts should each be labeled with: author's name, operating system, short title of article, format, word processor used, including version number.

For example, DOS/HD/WordPerfect v.6.0a, or Mac/HD/MS Word v.6.0.1. Here, DOS and Mac indicate the operating system, HD (high-density) indicates the diskette's physical format, the remainder indicates the word processor used.

3) If possible, it is helpful to have additional material such as tables, figure legends, and references saved as individual files--one file for each category.

4) Submit only the final accepted version of a manuscript. It is essential that submitted electronic files exactly match the final printout.

5) Diskettes should be packed between cardboard (or with foam or bubble-wrap) in an envelope which states that magnetic media is contained.

Please submit your word-processing disk, three copies of your manuscript, one original set of figures, and three photocopies (if photocopies are not legible, send three original sets) of the figures to:
