Instructions to Authors
Original articles, editorial correspondence and suggestions for review articles should be submitted as follows:
Papers relating to the bacterium should be sent to Dr Patrick J. Brennan, Department of Microbiology, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523-1677, USA, Fax: (970) 491 1815; Email: patrick.brennan@coclstate.edu Papers relating to the host defence or other aspects of tuberculosis research should be sent to Dr Jerrold Ellner, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), New Jersey Medical School, 185 South Orange Avenue, Newark, NJ 07103-2714, USA, Fax: (973) 972 7790, Email: ellnerjj@umdnj.edu.
Manuscripts may be submitted to: Jerrold Ellner University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey New Jersey Medical School 185 South Orange Avenue Newark, NJ 07103-2714 USA
Ethics Typescripts that contain the results of human and/or animal studies will be accepted for publication only if it is made clear that a high standard of ethics was applied in carrying out the investigations. Papers reporting clinical studies should, where appropriate, contain a statement that they have been carried out with ethical committee approval. Single case studies are not usually acceptable.
Number of Copies Manuscripts should be submitted in English as A4 double spaced typescript with generous margins, complete in all respects, including a title and a suggested running head. The name and address of the author should appear in the exact form required for publication. Please send the original typescript and illustrations together with three photocopies of the typescript and a further three sets of high quality original illustrations.
Title Your title page, numbered as 1, should give the title in capital letters (not exceeding 100 letters), a running title (not exceeding 50 letters) and the authors' names (as they are to appear), affiliations and complete addresses, including postal (zip) codes. The author and address to whom correspondence should be sent must be clearly indicated. Please supply telephone, fax and e-mail numbers for the corresponding author.
Abstracts An abstract of your manuscript, a maximum of 200 words, summarizing the content, should be provided on a separate sheet following the title page.
Length Manuscripts must be concise and not exceed approximately 5 printed pages. This is the equivalent to approximately 5000-5500 words. Assume each figure, table and 10 references are equivalent to 200 words.
Reference Format References in the text must correlate with the reference list and should be cited by name and date, not numbers, thus: Smith (1963); Smith and Jones (1965); Smith, Jones and Brown (1967). Where a reference has four or more authors it should be cited in the text thus: Smith et al (1972). If there are two references for Smith and Jones (1965) these should be designated a and b. The same will apply to Smith et al (1972), even if the co-authors in these references are different. The reference list at the end of the paper should include the names of all the authors. References are listed alphabetically. Where several papers by the same author are cited these should be arranged in single-author, double-author, treble-author, and multi-author groups (in that order), the references being arranged chronologically within each group, the earliest first. Groups of references within the text should be arranged in chronological order.

5. Reports and theses Murphy, C.T. (1973) An In Vitro Study of the Factors Affecting the Growth of Micro-organisms on the Skin. PhD Thesis, University of London.
In some instances, extra information such as edition and chapter number may be helpful to the reader. References which have not been published are acceptable only if `in press'. References in languages other than English will be printed as submitted. Responsibility for the accuracy of references rests solely with the authors.
Figures Three high quality photographic prints of each illustration should be submitted, one of which must be fully labelled; if the other two prints are unlabelled, they should be accompanied by photocopies of the labelled prints. Do not send negatives or photocopies on their own. Colour illustrations can be accepted only if subsidized. Mounting is undesirable. Please indicate lightly in pencil, on the reverse side, permissible lines of cropping, your name, the figure number, optimal size, and the `top' of the illustration. Labelling should be consistent with the text and must be large enough to be legible when reduced to page size. Please provide a magnification bar with all micrographs. Very simple line formulae can be set by the printer; complex formulae or biochemical pathways should be submitted as artwork and will be printed as they are presented to us. (The type area is 130 x 200mm. Please remember to allow sufficient space for the illustration legend in calculating the size of your illustration original.)
Illustrations should be given adequate legends, typed up as a list separate from the text. The illustrations should also be cited in the text.
Tables Tables should be numbered in Arabic numbers, given adequate titles or headings, typed on separate sheets of paper, attached to the manuscript, and should be cited in the text.
Keywords A list of three to six keywords should be supplied.
Units & Abbreviations The Royal Society of Medicine has published Units, Symbols and Abbreviations\MA Guide for Biological and Medical Editors and Authors 4th ed. (Ed.) Baran, D. N. You are requested to follow these, or similar, recommendations (e.g. IUPACIUB Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature), to use metric units and, wherever possible, to adopt the International System of Units (SI). Where SI units have not been universally accepted it is advisable to give values in traditional units in brackets. If abbreviations are used, the terms should be written out in full when first used, the abbreviation then being given in parentheses. Where abbreviations are adopted, capitals are preferred, for example ECG, BMR (not ecg, bmr) without full stops.
Fast Track Publication The journals has a fast-track system for publication of short reports of recent, important findings. Material for this section must be submitted on disk with an accompanying printout. After review this material will appear in the next available issue.
Disk/Electronic Submission After review, authors requested to resubmit should, where possible, supply the editorial office with a copy of the manuscript on disk together with 4 typescript copies. Ensure the disk and typescript match exactly. The Editor will accept a 3.5 inch disk in any IBM or Macintosh word processing format. Please indicate on the label attached to your disk, your name, address, typescript title and name of the word processing package used. Please ensure that all sections of your article are in a single file in the order set out above and with references in the correct style. Tables, with their captions, and figure legends should be supplied on disk in a separate file. Line illustrations may be supplied on disk but must be in a separate file and not embedded in the text. Photographic prints will be handled separately and should not be supplied on disk.
Copyright Information Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright of the paper shall be assigned to the Publisher. In consideration for the assignment of copyright, the Publisher will supply 50 offprints of each paper. The Publisher will not put any limitation on the personal freedom of the author to use material contained in the paper in any other works which may be published.
Permissions Information If illustrations are borrowed from published sources, written permission must be obtained from both publisher and author, and a credit line giving the source added to the legend. If text material totalling 250 to 300 words, or any tables, are borrowed verbatim from published sources, written permission is required from both publisher and author. With shorter quotations, it is sufficient to add a bibliographic credit. Permission letters for reproduced text or illustration must accompany the manuscript. If you have been unable to obtain permission, please point this out.
Proofs Page proofs will be submitted to the first named or a nominated author. Major alterations will be charged to the author.
Offprints A total of 50 free offprints of each paper will be made available to its author(s). Additional copies can be ordered at proof stage when a scale of costs will be supplied.
