Transactions of the Institute of Metal Finishing
The Transactions of the Institute of Metal Finishing is published bi-monthly. Contributions on all aspectsof surface finishing, from fundamental researchto in-service applications are considered for publication with the understanding that they have not been submited, accepted for publication or published elsewhere. authors are responsible for the accuracy of their contributions, must obtain clearance to use classified, copyrighted or proprietary matter, and must obtain company or sponsor permission to publish material in the paper where appropriate.
Instructions to Authors
Submission Three copies of the script and the originals of all figures and illustrations should be sent to: Honorary Editor Institute of Metal Finishing, Exeter House 48, Holloway Head, Birmingham, B1 1NQ If prepared on a word processor, please send a diskette of the script in addition, with the software used identified. Receipt of a suitable diskette is likely to speed up publication of the paper.
Refereeing All contributions are read by two or more referees before publication and amendment may be required before acceptance. Final acceptance or rejection of a contribution is made by the Honorary Editor. On acceptance, contributions are subject to editorial amendment.Contributions promoting products or processes will be rejected. Proprietry and trade names should be avoided if possible but articles mentioning them may be accepted if there is a genuine contribution to scientific understanding.
Scripts Scripts should be typed in double spacing on one side of A4 paper only. The authors name(s) and affiliation(s) should be given below the title followed by an abstract not exceeding 150 words.Authors are invited to list up to five keywords at the end of the abstract, to facilitate citation by abstracting services. The paper should normally contain separate sections to include an introduction, experimental data, discussion of results and conclusions. Authors are requested to use SI units wherever possible. It is, however accepted that in technological contributions units may be more meaningful. SI equivalents should then be given, in a footnote. Pages should be numbered. Authors are requested to provide a brief resume of their careers and qualifications and a recent photograph of themselves for inclusion in the Transactions.
References References should be numbered consecutively through the text. The reference details should be listed in numerical order at the end of the script. References should include the authors, year of publication, volume number, issue number if essential, and page number, as: Reference to a paper S.J.F Andrews and J.T. Heron, Trans IMF 1971, 49, 105. Reference to a book S. Wernick and R. Pinner, “The Surface Ttreatment and Finishing of Aluminium and it’s Alloys”, Robert Draper, Teddington, 4th edition 1972.
Illustrations Graphs, diagrams and sketches should be drawn in black on white paper or tracing paper. All lettering and figuring should be of a size to remain legible after reduction to fit one, two or three column widths of the transactions. Curves should be drawn boldly, the lines being twice as thick as the frame. For clarity, only major grid lines should be shown. Experimental points should be indicated with appropriatesymbols. Photographs should be in black and white with good contrast. Photomicrographs must contain a labelled unit length. All tables, graphs, diagrams and photgraphs should be supplied with the appropriate captions. Tables should be numbered in sequence with Roman numerals. Figures should be numbered in sequence using Arabic numerals.
Reprints Authors will be sent ten run-on free of charge. Further reprints/run-on copies are available from IMF at reasonable rates.
