About the journal

Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods

Published quarterly, Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods is a peer-reviewed journal whose aim is twofold. Firstly, the journal contains original research on subjects dealing with the mechanisms by which foreign chemicals cause toxic tissue injury. Chemical substances of interest include industrial compounds, environmental pollutants, hazardous wastes, drugs, pesticides, and chemical warfare agents. The scope of the journal spans from molecular and cellular mechanisms of action to the consideration of mechanistic evidence in establishing regulatory policy.

Secondly, the journal addresses aspects of the development, validation, and application of new and existing laboratory methods, techniques, and equipment. A variety of research methods are discussed, including:

  • in vivo studies with standard and alternative species;
  • in vitro studies and alternative methodologies;
  • molecular, biochemical, and cellular techniques;
  • pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
  • mathematical modeling and computer programs;
  • forensic analyses;
  • risk assessment;
  • data collection and analysis
  •

    Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods provides comprehensive coverage of the most critical issues in the determination, evaluation and testing of toxic substances and their effects for a wide variety of professionals, including toxicologists, pharmacologists, and biochemists from industry, government and academia.

    SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

    Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of ?5.00 per copy.

    Electronic Submission: Authors are encouraged to transmit manuscript in electronic form as a WORD file directly to the editor-in-chief at Rakesh_Dixit@Merck.Com. Unless specifically requested by the editor, no hard copy print is necessary. The electronic file should not exceed 2 megabytes. Authors should include full contact information e-mail address, phone and fax numbers, and mailing address with each submission. In every case, receipt of the paper will be acknowledged by the editor. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

    All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of no more than 250 words and a list of keywords in alphabetical order. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text. Authors are required to submit index terms that may be suitable for creating subject index on a separate page.

    TOXEXPRESS: Authors are requested to submit short communications of less than 2000 words (including references, abstract) for a rapid publication under the section TOXEXPRESS directly to editor-in-chief at Rakesh_Dixit@Merck.Com. All TOXEXPRESS communications will be published within 2 to 3 months of the acceptance of the final form of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to nominate their own articles for rapid publication based on scientific merits.

    Invited or Unsolicited Reviews: Authors are requested to submit highly significant, complete and timely reviews of the important topics in Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods. These reviews should be on topics that have matured to an advanced state in Toxicology. Authors are encouraged to contact the editor prior to submitting reviews. Currently there is no page limit on number of pages.

    Announcements and Summary Report of Recent Scientific Meetings: Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods will accept public announcement of meetings, symposiums or other matters as well as brief update on recent scientific meetings.

    Letters to the Editor-in-Chief: Letters commenting on articles published in the journal should be submitted within 2 months of publication and may not exceed 400 words. The editor will not allow introduction of new data. Both letter to editor and responses to the letter will be published simultaneously.

    References: Should be alphabetized by author and compiled in a separate section at the end of the manucript. Cite in text by author and date. Reference style should follow The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed. (Journal article:) Boyce, S. T., and Ham, R. G. 1985. Cultivation, frozen storage, and clonal growth or normal human epidermal keratinocyets in serum-free media. J. Tissue Cult. Methods 9:83-93. (Book:) Robbins, S. L., and Kumar, V. 1987. Basic Pathology. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders. (Chapter in a book:) Frosch, P. J. 1982. Irritancy of soap and detergent bars. In Principles of Cosmetics for the Dermatologist. ed. P. Frost and S. N. Howitz, 5-12. St. Louis: C. V. Mosby.

    Abbreviation: Authors should conform to nomenclature, symbols, and abbreviations given in the 揢niform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals?(see above). For styling of isotope, enzyme, and biochemical nomenclature, consult the Information for Authors of the Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Units will be in general accordance with the International System (IS) as adopted by the 11th General Congress on Weights and Measures. Periods are not used after abbreviations (note exceptions e.g., i.e., and in. [for inches]). Com-mon abbreviations to be used in this journal are:

    mg   milligram iv intravenous
    礸   microgram po oral
    ng   nanogram LD50 medial lethal dose
    kg   kilogram LC50 medial lethal concentration
    ppm   parts per million Hz Hertz
    cpm   counts per minute s seconds
    dpm   disintegrations per minute min minutes

    Tables and Figures: Figures submitted (line drawings, photos, photo-micrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher, sized to fit on journal page, EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only, submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author抯 name, and top edge indicated. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first figure is $1,200.00. Subsequent figures, totaling no more than 4 text pages, are $500.00 each. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. Figures needing reduction or enlargement will be charged an additional 25%. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

    Tables should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included.
