Instructions to Authors
Aims and scope
Toxicology and Industrial Health, a peer-reviewed semi-quarterly publication, publishes original research papers presenting scientific data dealing with basic and applied research in the fields of toxicology, biochemical toxicology, genetic and cellular toxicology, pathology, and risk assessment associated with hazardous wastes and groundwater. This journal discusses the causes of chronic disease in complex occupational and environmental settings, presents chemical toxicological profiles, and evaluates the health effects resulting from exposure to various chemicals.
Types of Work Considered
Manuscripts are considered for publication with the understanding that they have not been published previously and are not under consideration by another publication. The journal will publish rapidly, brief communications reporting on important research. It will publish several types of articles including papers describing original research results; reviews on subjects of contemporary importance to toxicologists and biochemical scientists; reports or proceedings, which will be published as supplements to issues of the journal at the expense of the organization that submits the proceedings; and brief announcements of scientific meetings or courses of interest to readers.
Manuscript Preparation
All manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced on one side of the paper only. An original and two copies, each accompanied by artwork, should be submitted.
Title Page. In addition to the title, this page should include the full name and affiliation for each author. Also indicate which author should be the corresponding author and provide a full mailing address, phone and fax numbers and e-mail address. Please include a running title limited to 50 characters and provide up to 6 key words applicable to the content of the manuscript.
Text. Papers are to be organized into Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, and References sections.
References and Notes. References are listed alphabetically by surname of the first author at the end of each manuscript. Articles cited within the text are listed as follows: if one author, by surname of the first author and year of publication; two authors, by the surnames of both authors and year of publication; multiple authors, by surname of the first author followed by the phrase "et al.," and year of publication. Consecutive citations in the text are placed in chronological order and separated by semi-colons.
Abbreviations for titles of periodicals should conform to those used in the latest edition of Index Medicus. References should include authors’ last names and initials, article title, journal, volume, page range, and year. Include the city and publisher’s name for books. For further information, consult the American Medical Association Manual of Style.

Tables. These should be labeled sequentially as Table 1, Table 2, etc. Each table should be typed on a separate page, numbered, titled, and cited in the text. References to table footnotes should be made by means of Arabic numerals.
Figures. Photographs and line drawings should also be labeled sequentially, numbered, and cited in the text. Photographs should be professionally prepared glossy prints. Please note that for color figures, there is a $1000 fee for the first page in color and $500 for each subsequent page in color to help defray the printing cost. Line drawings should be black ink on white paper. Artwork should be supplied in its final size for production - 3 5/16" (20 pica) single column or 6 15/16" (42 pica) double column. Screened artwork should be avoided. (Screened: a grid pattern of dots in close proximity.) Gradations should range between 20% and 70% black with at least a 20% variation of shades when used in the same piece of art. If possible, use distinct patterns to show variation instead of gradations. Line rules should be at least 1 point in thickness for clear reproduction. The author’s name should appear on the reverse side of each figure. Symbols, lettering, and numbering should be clear and large enough to be legible after the figure has been reduced. Figure legends should be typewritten (double-spaced) on a separate sheet.
Permissions. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from the author and publisher for the use of quotes, illustrations, tables, and other materials taken from previously published works not in the public domain. The letters of permission should accompany the manuscript. The original source should be mentioned in the figure caption or table footnote.
Covering Letter/ Conflict of Interest. Authors should provide in a cover letter the name, address, telephone, and fax numbers of the corresponding author. Authors are encouraged to suggest the names of possible reviewers and to indicate the names of individuals who may not be able to provide an unbiased review. Authors should describe any affiliations or financial arrangements with any company whose product appears prominently in the manuscript or with any company making a competing product. Such information will be kept in confidence while the paper is under review and will not influence the editorial decision. If the article is accepted for publication, the editor will discuss with the authors the manner in which the information will be communicated to the reader.
Submitting Computer Disks for ACCEPTED Manuscripts. To help expedite processing, Toxicology and Industrial Health encourages the submission of accepted articles on computer diskettes. All diskettes must be accompanied by the original and one paper of the manuscript. Label diskettes with the following information: (1) author’s name, (2) article title, and (3) software and hardware used. Diskettes (either 3.5 or 5.25 inch) may be produced on IBM, IBM-compatible, Apple, or Wang computers. Authors using Apple computers should not use the "Fast Save" option.
