About the journal

Systematic Parasitology publishes papers on the systematics, taxonomy and nomenclature of the following groups: Nematoda (including plant-parasitic), Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda, Acanthocephala, Aspidogastrea, Cestodaria, Arthropoda (parasitic copepods, hymenopterans, mites, ticks, etc.), Protozoa (parasitic groups), and parasitic genera in other groups, such as Mollusca, Turbelleria, etc. Systematic Parasitology publishes fully illustrated research papers, brief communications, and fully illustrated major revisions. In order to maintain high standards, all contributors describing new taxa are asked to state clearly where the holotype is deposited and to make paratypes available for examination by the referees. It is recognized that, in some cases, this may cause problems for the authors, but it is hoped that by adhering to this rule authors may be protected against rapid synonymy of their taxa, and the types will be preserved for posterity.

Systematic Parasitology will publish papers on the systematics, taxonomy and nomenclature of the following groups: Nematoda (including plant-parasitic), Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda, Acanthocephala, Aspidogastrea, Cestodaria, Arthropoda (parasitic copepods, hymenopterans, mites, ticks, etc.), Protozoa (parasitic groups) and parasitic genera in other groups, e.g. Mollusca, Turbellaria etc. The journal will be published nine times per year.

The following types of communication will be considered for publication:

  • papers of about 6,000 words (fully illustrated)
  • brief communications or research notes (about 2,000 words), not normally illustrated
  • major revisions (about 24,000 words), fully illustrated.

Instructions to Authors

All communications should be submitted in triplicate, on good white bond paper, typed on one side of the paper only, double spacing, with wide margins all round. The papers should be in English or French (with an English summary). Any communication which contains descriptions of new taxa (genera or species) should be accompanied by specimens (preferably paratypes) for scrutiny by the referees and by a statement where the holotypes are deposited. Papers and major revisions should include, at the beginning, a summary (approximately 250 words for papers and 500 words for major revisions).

The illustrations (all termed figures) should be either black/white photographs on glossy paper or drawings (not more than twice the size of the page) in India ink. Colour figures will be included only at the author‘s expense. Photographs should be mounted on stiff card for protection. In lettering the figures it should be borne in mind that the figures will have to be reduced to one or two columns width (7.5 and 16 cm, respectively). On the back of each figure should be written (in pencil): name of author and number of figure (Arabic numbering); the top should be indicated by an arrow. Legends to figures should be typed on separate sheets. Two additional prints or photocopies should be included for refereeing purposes. Photographs and diagrams should include a marker bar indicating the scale where appropriate. Tables should be typed on separate sheets. For technical reasons, no vertical lines will be included and horizontal lines should be kept to a minimum. The tables should have clear headings, which make their meanings comprehensible without reference to the text, and should have Roman numbering. In order to avoid difficulties in setting, tables should be as concise as possible. Preferably, they should fit into one column (not more than 52 letters or numerals per line). If this is not possible they should not exceed 100 letters or numerals per line (two columns width).

It is recommended that in cases where certain measurements are diagnostic characters of a taxon, especially in the case of certain plant parasitic nematodes, the mean and standard deviation of these measurements are given. These should, however, be included only when dealing with original measurements from large numbers (30+) of worms.

References in the text should be given by author(s) and year: if more than two authors are cited, only the name of the first should be given, followed by et al. At the end of the text they should be arranged alphabetically and cited in accordance with the Harvard System, with full journal title, e.g. Bisset, S.A. (1977) Notocotylus tadornae n.sp. and Notocotylus gippyensis (Beverley-Burton, 1958) (Trematoda: Notocotylidae) from waterfowl in New Zealand: morphology, life history and systematic relations. Journal of Helminthology, 51, 365-372; Prudhoe, S. & Bray, R.A. (1982) Platyhelminth parasites of the Amphibia. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 217 pp.

The spelling of the text should be according to the Oxford Dictionaries and Hart‘s Rules for Compositors and Readers at Oxford University Press. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature will be strictly adhered to.

It is recommended that authors study previous copies of the journal and arrange their manuscripts accordingly. Manuscripts in which these guide lines have not been observed may not be considered for publication.

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail (if no e-mail address is available or appears to be out of order, proofs will be sent by regular mail).

Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours. Please do not make any changes to the PDF file. Minor corrections (+/- 10) should be sent as an e-mail attachment to: proofscorrection@wkap.nl. Always quote the four-letter journal code and article number and the PIPS No. from your proof in the subject field of your e-mail. Extensive corrections must be clearly marked on a printout of the PDF file and should be sent by first-class mail (airmail overseas).

Authors are entitled to 50 free offprints per published article. Additional copies (both hard copies and PDF files) can be obtained at the price mentioned in the order form accompanying the proofs.
