About the journal

Sport, Education and Society is an international journal which provides a focal point for the publication of research on pedagogy, policy and the wide range of associated social, cultural, political and ethical issues in physical activity and sport. The journal will concentrate both on the forms, contents and contexts of physical education and sport found in schools, colleges and other sites of formal education, and the pedagogies of play, callisthenics, gymnastics and sport found in familial environments, various sport clubs, the leisure industry, as well as private fitness and health studios, dance schools, gymnastic clubs and rehabilitation centres.

Sport, Education and Society therefore wishes to encourage contributions not only from social scientists, educationists and sports scientists working in the field of pedagogy but also from all professionals with interests in theoretical and empirical issues relating to pedagogy, policy, curriculum, social inclusion, equity, identity, and progressive educational development in physical activity, sport and health.

Instructions to Authors

Articles should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution. Ideally, submitted articles should be between 5,000 and 7,000 (max) words in length. In order to guarantee blind review the name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out should only appear on a separate first page. Each article should be accompanied by an abstract/summary of 100-500 words, also on a separate sheet. The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Footnotes to the text should be avoided. Articles should be sent to: Professor John Evans, School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, Loughborough University, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 3TU, UK. Articles can normally only be considered if three complete copies of each manuscript are submitted.

Papers accepted become the copyright of the journal, unless otherwise specifically agreed. Rejected manuscripts will not be returned unless sufficient stamps/international postal coupons have been sent.

Electronic Submission. Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic disk forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed on a separate sheet. Tables should be numbered by Roman numerals, and figures by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a,b,c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following standard form.

For books: SCOTT, P. (1984) The Crisis of the University (London, Croom Helm).

For articles: ARCHER, J. & MCDONALD, M. (1990) Gender roles and sports in adolescent girls, Leisure Studies, 9, pp. 225-240.

For chapters within books: WILLIS, P. (1983) Cultural production and theories of reproduction, in: L. BARTON & S. WALKER (Eds) Race, Class and Education (London, Croom Helm).

Titles of journals should not be abbreviated. In book references, 'Vol.', 'Chapter' and 'pp.' (if required) should appear immediately after the book title.

Non-discriminatory writing. Please ensure that writing is free from bias, for instance, by replacing 'he' or 'his' with 'he' or 'she' or 's/he' or 'his/her' and by using non-racist language.

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editors within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author抯 preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Carfax Publishing, Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Carfax Publishing, Taylor & Francis Ltd., provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Carfax Publishing, Taylor & Francis Ltd. is notified in writing so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
