About the journal
The Southwestern Naturalist includes scientific manuscripts that deal with living or fossil organisms, assemblages, or ecosystems that occur in Mexico, Central America, and the region of the United States west of the Mississippi River and south of 40°N latitude. Acceptable topics include anatomy, physiology, heredity, behavior, natural history, dispersal, distribution, evolution, and systematics, but this list is not comprehensive. Both feature articles and notes are published. Feature articles mostly communicate results of field and laboratory studies. Notes are reserved for short communications, such as behavioral observations, range extensions, and other important findings that do not in themselves constitute a comprehensive study. The format for feature articles and notes must conform to the style guidelines summarized in the Instructions for Authors (this is a printable Adobe Acrobat 4.0 file; you may download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader software).

Instructions to Authors
THE SOUTHWESTERN NATURALIST INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS October 2007 The Southwestern Naturalist (a publication of the Southwestern Association of Naturalists since 1953) is an international journal (published quarterly) that reports original and significant research in any field of natural history. Publication is in English, and manuscripts may be feature articles or notes. Feature articles communicate results of completedscientific investigations, while notes are reserved for short communications (e.g., behavioral observations, range extensions, and other important findings that do not in themselves constitute a comprehensive study). All manuscripts (feature articles and notes) require an abstract in both English and Spanish. For submission, authors may submit an electronic copy viamail (use Microsoft Word; do not use Microsoft Word 2007) to swnat@memphis.edu or submit an original and three copies of the manuscript and all associated material to the Managing Editor, Dr. Michael L. Kennedy, Ecological Research Center, Department of Biology, The University of Memphis, South Campus, Memphis, TN 38152 USA. Submission should be accompanied by a letter of transmittal indicating the paper is submitted for exclusive consideration by The Southwestern Naturalist. Should your manuscript be accepted for publication, you must submit an electronic copy (in Microsoft Word) of the final revision. Pages charges for publication in The Southwestern Naturalist currently are US$80 per page. However, authors with little or no publication support may request a waiver of any of all page charges for up to eight pages per publication if one author is a member of the Southwestern Association of Naturalists from the time of submission to publication. Questions concerning publication in The Southwestern Naturalist should be addressed to the Managing Editor.
