About the journal

Description
Solar System Research, the English-language translation of Astronomicheskii Vestnik, explores the bodies of the Solar System: planets and their satellites, asteroids, comets, meteoric matter, and cosmic dust. Coverage focuses on physics and dynamics, origin and evolution, and methods for investigating them. Papers address Earth atmosphere physics, planet cosmochemistry, and issues of comparative planetology.

The journal has significantly expanded the scope of its interest to new research fields, such as planetary geology and cosmophysics, planetary plasma physics and heliosphere, atmospheric sciences, and general problems in comparative planetology.

Solar System Research is the only journal from Russia dealing with the topics of planetary exploration, including the results of original study obtained through ground based and/or space born observations and theoretical/computer modeling.

Instructions to Authors

Dear author,

In order to simplify the procedure of interaction between an author (coauthors) and the publisher we ask you to send agreements on transfer of copyright (in Russian or in English) simultaneously with the manuscript of the article to the editorial board of the journal. The agreement should be sent in duplicate.

This agreement is a contract of adhesion.

We draw your attention to the fact that the agreement enters into force under the condition of acceptance of an article for publication in English. If for any reason your article is refused by the editorial board of the journal, the agreement automatically loses force. The decision on acceptance of an article for publication is the exclusive right of the editorial board of the journal. Signing of the agreement by an author (coauthors) means that the author (coauthors) has acquainted himself (themselves) and agrees (agree) with the conditions of the agreement.

A copyright transfer agreement form can be downloaded at our site:

Model Author's Agreement Form

The completed and signed agreements may be presented in person or sent to the editorial board of the journal:

  • by post
  • by e-mail (PDF file) or fax; the original must be subsequently mailed by post.

The journal Solar System Research (Astronomicheskii vestnik) publishes research related to space and surface-based observations and theoretical studies of bodies of the Solar System (planets and their satellites, comets, asteroids, meteoroids, and meteoric substance), including their physical nature, motion, interior structure, and chemical composition. Papers concerned with investigating the planets?surfaces and atmospheres, near-planet space, planetary geology and aeronomy, comparative planetology, cosmochemistry and cosmogony, including problems of origin, evolution and dynamics of Solar System bodies, formation of protoplanetary accretion disks and extra-solar planets and their properties are published. Results of studying the Earth as a planet, problems related to interplanetary medium, including the heliospheric structure and dynamics and interaction of planets and small bodies with the solar plasma, are reflected in the journal. Reviews in the scientific areas covered by the journal are submitted, as well as articles on theoretical problems related to development of models, some aspects of measurement technique and methods, notes, including information about scientific conferences, monograph reviews, and personalia.

1. All papers sent to Solar System Research should be accompanied by a letter from the scientific organization.

2. All papers are usually reviewed by no less than two reviewers, who are prominent specialists in the field of knowledge, to which the article pertains. Corresponding to international rules, reviewers are anonymous. It is recommended that the authors should thoroughly consider the reviewers?remarks and wishes.

3. Articles, reviews, and notes, presented to the journal should usually have a length, respectively, of less than 20, 40, and 5 typed pages, including references.

4. Articles are presented in both typed and electronic forms (Word). Two copies of the double-spaced typed text are required. The font size should be 12; each page should have 29?0 lines; the left margin should be 25 mm. All pages, including tables and references, should be numbered consecutively.

5. The main heading should appear in the following order: (1) index of the article according to the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC); (2) the title of the article (in capital letters); (3) ?year; (4) the list of authors by initials and surname; (5) the list of affiliations and addresses of the authors; (6) the date the article was received. For example:

UDC 523.61; 523.64

SOME FEATURES OF LIGHT CURVES AND FLARE ACTIVITY OF COMETS

?2003. V. S. Filonenko* and K. I. Churyumov**

*Institute of Astronomy of Kharkov National University, Sumskaya ul. 35, Kharkov, 61022 Ukraine
**Astronomical Observatory, Kiev State University, ul. Observatoriya 3, Kiev, 252053 Ukraine

Received March 2, 2001; in final form, April 22, 2002

The main heading is followed by an abstract, which should summarize the basic results of the paper and have a length of about one-half of a typed page. Nonstandard abbreviations and references are not recommended in the abstract.

6. All formulas and symbols should be typed (or hand-written large and legibly in black ink).
Formulas should be marked in the following way:

(1) Capital and lower case letters (in all alphabets) that may be confused with one another should be marked in pencil: use two underbars for capital letters and two overbars for lower case letters.

(2) Exponents and superscripts should be identified with arcs drawn below them in pencil. Subscripts should be marked by arcs above.

(3) Greek letters should be underlined with a red pencil, gothic letters, with a blue one. In addition, these letters should be identified by making marginal notes (giving the names of the letters) once per page, for example, xi (xi), zeta (zeta), etc.

(4) Mark vectors by one underbar in blue pencil. Do not put over the letter.

(5) Special signs (for example, , , etc.) should be identified by marginal notes 搒pecial sign.?

(6) Letters or signs that can be confused if handwritten should be identified by marginal notes written in pencil; e.g., e (not l), l (l); x (letter).

(7) Mathematical functions such as sin, lim, log, and exp, as well as chemical symbols and the figure of zero should be marked by a horizontal bracket underneath written in pencil.

(8) Uniformity of sub- or superscripts in formulas is required; that is, use either roman or Russian characters.

7. The following rules should be followed in the text.

(1) The names of asteroids, comets, meteor showers, and formations on the surfaces of planets and their satellites should be given in Russian (in the papers presented in Russian). The names of other astronomical objects (meteorites, stars, etc.) are given in their original spelling.

(2) The names of foreign spacecraft are given in English or their original language. If an abbreviation is used, it should be identified with its first use by giving the full name in parentheses.

(3) The names of Russian spacecraft are given in Russian.

(4) A reference in the text contains the author抯 name in the original language, as given in the References, followed by the year of publication in parentheses.

8. Publications are arranged in the order of the Roman alphabet. If the paper is presented in Russian, publications in Russian arranged in alphabetical order are the first to appear in The Reference List. They are followed by references to papers published in other languages, which are arranged in the order of the Roman alphabet. The papers of one and the same author are ordered by year of publication irrespective of the presence of co-authors. If several papers were published in one year, add to the year letters a, b, c. If the number of authors is no more than four, write down the names of all coauthors. If there are five authors or more, give only the names of the first three authors and add (et al.). The names of the authors should be followed by the entire title of the article in the original language and the information about publication (standard all reviation of the journal, year, volume, start and end pages). For example:

9. Two copies of illustrations (figures, photographs), each on a separate sheet, are required. The letters in the illustrations are marked as formulas. A list of figure captions is provided on a separate sheet. In the text, marginal notes should be used to show the place where the figure should be inserted. If a photograph or graphical material is borrowed from other authors, the source of the information should be pointed out and permission to reproduce the material should be given.

10. Each table is printed on a separate sheet. The tables are numbered successively. Each table should have a title at the top. No abbreviations are allowed in the tables. The location of the table is indicated in the margins of the manuscript.

11. The manuscript should be accompanied by the exact postal address of the author (if there are several authors, by the address of the first author), his e-mail address, official and home phones. The proof is sent to the authors by e-mail.

12. The editorial board reserves the right to refuse a manuscript, giving a brief explanation of the reason. The manuscripts are not returned to the authors.
