About the journal

Soil Science An Interdisciplinary Approach to Soil Research, satisfies the professional needs of all scientists and laboratory personnel involved in soil and plant research. The authoritative research articles published in the journal report the most significant work of leading experts from every area of soil and plant science杝oil chemistry, physics, fertility, morphology, microbiology, and environmental soil science.

The journal also keeps readers current on the newest books in the field, and editorials and letters to the editor expand on points made in the articles and provide illuminating commentary from the soil science community.

Soil Science satisfies the professional needs of all scientists and laboratory personnel involved in soil and plant research by publishing primary research reports and critical reviews of basic and applied soil science, especially as it relates to soil and plant studies and general environmental soil science.

Each month, Soil Science presents authoritative research articles from an impressive array of discipline: soil chemistry and biochemistry, physics, fertility and nutrition, soil genesis and morphology, soil microbiology and mineralogy. Of immediate relevance to soil scientists-both industrial and academic-this unique publication also has long-range value for agronomists and environmental scientists.

Soil Science considers papers that are original, unpublished investigations in soils or in soil-plant problems. Each paper must be accompanied by a statement indicating that the material has not been published previously and is being considered solely by Soil Science. When manuscripts are accepted for publication, it will be necessary for Lippincott Williams & Williams to receive a completed copyright assignment form from all authors. The forms will be mailed from the editorial office. Authors must also include permission to reproduce any previously published material.

Instructions to Authors

Mail manuscripts and address all editorial correspondence to Dr. Robert L. Tate III, Department of Environmental Sciences, Rutgers University, 14 College Farm Road, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901-8551, U.S.A. Submit 4 copies.

Review of Manuscripts
Copies of the manuscript will be reviewed for suitability for publication in Soil Science. Authors may suggest two or three independent referees who are qualified to evaluate the manuscript.

Organization of Manuscript Pages
Type/print all copy double-spaced on 8?x 11-inch high quality paper (or A2 size) with 1-inch margins all around (Note: double-spacing applies to all copy, including tables, footnotes, references, legends, and other subsidiary matter, regardless of the size of type in which the material appears in printed form). Manuscripts should not be stapled. Manuscript pages should be submitted in the following order and numbered consecutively:

1. -Cover Page. Include: Article Title; Authors; Corresponding Author. Name of corresponding author, mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address; Short Title. A shortened title, no more than 45 characters that can be used as a running head; Key Words.

2. -Abstract.

3. -Main Text.

4. -References. Cite by name, year in text. Arrange alphabetically by author. Include only those references cited in text or article. Include only published or "in press" items. References to unpublished material should be confined to text footnotes. Use the International Serials Catalogue for abbreviations of journal names and when in doubt give full name of periodical. Note and follow form of references in a current issue of Soil Science.

5. -Figure legends. Collect all figure legends on one page (or pages). Legends should not be attached to or written on illustrations.

6. -Tables. Type or print out each table, double-spaced, on a separate sheet of paper. Number tables consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text and supply a brief title for each. Be sure that each table is cited in the text. Do not use internal horizontal and vertical rules. Place explanatory matter in footnotes, not in the heading. Explain in footnotes all abbreviations used in each table. For footnotes, use the following symbols, in this sequence: ? ? ? ? ||, #, etc. If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and acknowledge them fully.

Illustrations
Number figures consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text. Send sharp, glossy, black-and-white photographic prints no larger than 8 [times] 10-inches. High-quality laser printouts are also acceptable. Letters, numbers, and symbols should be clear and even throughout and of sufficient size that each item will still be legible when reduced for publication. Titles and detailed explanations belong in the legends for figures, not on the figures themselves. Each figure should have a label on its back indicating the number of the figure, author's name, and top of the figure. Do not write on the back of figures, bend figures, mount figures, or use paper clips. If a figure has been published, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. Permission is required irrespective of authorship or publisher, except for documents in the public domain.

Electronic Submission of Accepted Manuscripts
Authors must submit electronic diskettes of the revised version of the manuscripts along with the typed revised manuscripts, labeled with author name(s), article title, and software used; Microsoft Word is preferred, both other software is acceptable. The journal does not assume responsibility for errors in conversion of customized software, newly released software, and special characters. Mathematics and tabular material will be processed in the traditional manner.

Page Charges
Senior authors who are subscribers to Soil Science will be billed at the rate of $25.00 per page for the first 4 pages. Senior authors who are not subscribers to Soil Science will be billed at the rate of $40.00 per page for the first 4 pages. An additional charge of $90.00 per page will be billed to all authors for pages in excess of four (4). In rare cases, payment of page charges may represent a hardship. If so, appeal may be made to the editor to waive or reduce page charges.

Proofs
Authors will be provided with proofs to proofread for typesetting errors. Important changes are allowed, but authors will be charged for excessive alterations in the proof. All proofs should be returned to Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers within 48 hours of receipt.

Copies and Reprints
A reprint order form, showing costs of reprints, is sent with proofs. Send reprint requests to Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 301 W. Camden Street, Baltimore, MD 21201-2436; fax 410-528-4434; email reprints@lww.com.

Instructions for Electronic Manuscript Submission
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins will accept submission of electronic versions of manuscripts in conjunction with the traditional paper version. The preferred storage medium is a 5?or 3?inch disk in an MS-DOS compatible format. Files in a MacIntosh-compatible format will also be accepted.

Files should be submitted in one of the following standard word processing formats:

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Microsoft Word

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   WordPerfect

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   WordStar, or XYWrite.

While we can convert from other word processing formats, the vagaries of the conversion process may introduce errors. Do not submit ASCII text files.

Each submitted disk must be clearly labeled with:

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   the name of the author

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   item title

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   journal title

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   type of equipment used to generate the disk

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   word processing program (including version number),

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   and filenames used

The file submitted on disk must be the final corrected version of the manuscript and must agree with the final accepted version of the submitted paper manuscript. The disk submitted should contain only the final version of the manuscript. Delete all other material from the disk.

Please follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style as given in "Instructions to Authors."

Note, however, that while the paper version of the manuscript must be presented in the traditional double spaced format, the electronic version will be typeset and should not contain any extraneous formatting instructions. For example:

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Use hard carriage returns only at the end of paragraphs and display lines (e.g., titles, subheadings)

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Do not use an extra hard return between paragraphs

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Do not use tabs or extra space at the start of a paragraph or for list entries

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Do not indent runover lines in references

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Turn off line spacing

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Turn off hyphenation and justification

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Do not specify page breaks, page numbers, or headers

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Do not specify typeface

?SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">   Care should be taken to correctly enter "one" (1) and lower case "el" (l), as well as "zero" (0) and capital "oh" (O)

Please observe the following conventions concerning dashes: Use a single hyphen with space before it for a minus sign, use a double hyphen (with space before and after) to indicate a "long dash" in text, and a triple hyphen (with no extra space) to indicate a range of numbers (e.g. "23---45").

Illustrations and tables will be handled conventionally. However, figure and table legends should be included at the end of the electronic file.

Non-standard characters (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should be coded consistently throughout the text. Please make a list of such characters and provide a listing of the codes used.
