About the journal

Skin Research and Technology is a clinically-oriented journal on biophysical methods and imaging techniques and how they are used in dermatology, cosmetology and plastic surgery for noninvasive quantification of skin structure and functions. Papers are invited on the development and validation of methods and their application in the characterization of diseased, abnormal and normal skin. The topics include blood flow, colorimetry, thermography, evaporimetry, epidermal humidity, desquamation, profilometry, skin mechanics, epiluminiscence microscopy, high-frequency ultrasonography, confocal microscopy, digital imaging, image analysis and computerized evaluation and magnetic resonance. Noninvasive biochemical methods (such as lipids, keratin and tissue water) and the instrumental evaluation of cytological and histological samples are also covered. The journal has a wide scope and aims to link scientists, clinical researchers and technicians through original articles, communications, editorials and commentaries, letters, reviews, announcements and news. Contributions should be clear, experimentally sound and novel.

Authors submitting a paper do so on in the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Blackwell Munksgaard if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. When the manuscript has been accepted, the corresponding author will receive a copyright assignment form from the editorial office, to be returned signed on behalf of all co-authors.
The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of Blackwell Munksgaard.
Rapid evaluation and publication is intended. Authors will normally receive the editors' evaluation within 10 weeks after a manuscript is submitted. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed.
The journal cannot be held responsible for loss of or damage to mailed manuscripts or for the statements of contributors. The author is responsible for all statements made, including changes by the copy editor, which must be reviewed by the author in proof.
Manuscript and disk Provide manuscripts in English. 3 copies of each manuscript, including tables and figures, must accompany the disk. Copy the files onto newly formatted 3.5-inch floppy disks containing an exact copy of the manscript with tables and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or JPEG), and clearly label the journal, author and title, file content, format, software and program version number. The illustrative material accompanying each copy of the manuscript must be originals (not photocopies). Type the manuscript double-spaced with margins of at least 25 mm (1 inch). Begin each manuscript component on a new page in the sequence: title page; abstract and key words (3-5); text, acknowledgements, references, tables (each table, complete with title and footnotes, on a separate page); and legends for illustrations. The title page should include the authors' names, the names, in English, of institutions to be attributed and their city and country of location. The name, full postal address (including postcode) and the telephone and fax numbers of the author responsible for correspondence and offprints should be stated. Number pages consecutively, beginning with the title page. Number the tables consecutively with Arabic numerals. Avoid footnotes and appendices; incorporate them into the text. Use no more than 3 levels of headings, clearly indicating the level of each. For any further details, consult the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals, ref. (2) below.
Abstract This must be structured into the following blocks: Background/purpose, Methods, Results, Conclusion.
Illustrations All figures should clarify the text and their number should be kept to a minimum. Details must be large enough to retain their clarity after reduction. Submit unmounted copies of each illustration, identifying them with a label on the back that indicates the number, author's name and the top. Line drawings should be professionally drafted and photographed; halftones should exhibit high contrast. Incorporate linear size scale when relevant. The author must pay for color illustrations at a rate quoted by the publisher. Submit original transparencies and 3 sets of color prints.
References Number references consecutively in the order in which they appear first in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). List all references cited, and only these, at the end of the manuscript. Abbreviate journal titles according to Index Medicus. Use the full titles for unlisted journals.
Examples: 1. STANDARD JOURNAL ARTICLE Pinnagoda J, Tupker RA, Agner T, Serup J. Guidelines for transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurement. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Br Med J 1988: 296: 401-405. 3. CHAPTER IN A BOOK Duteil L, Queille-Russel C, Czernielewski J. Assessing treatment of psoriasis and eczema by noninvasive methods. In: Frosch PJ, Kligman AM, eds. Noninvasive methods for the quantification of skin functions. Berlin: Springer-Verlag, 1993: 223-240.
Abbreviations and symbols Use only standard abbreviations. All units will be metric. Use no Roman numerals in the text. In decimals, use a decimal point and not a comma. Authors can consult the following source: (1) CBE Style Manual Committee. Scientific style and format: the CBE manual for authors, editors, and publishers. 6th ed. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 1994. Avoid abbreviations in the title. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement.
Proofs The author will receive two copies of the first proof. Correct one copy and return it by airmail to the publisher with the working copy of the manuscript. Only minor corrections other than typographical errors are allowed without extra cost.
Offprints Fifty offprints of each article will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints can be obtained by using the offprint order form accompanying the proofs. |
