Readers emphasize they want to see articles that describe the involvement of those instruments, systems, or services that have successfully satisfied a need or solved a problem.

Typically, Sea Technology articles deal with the background of a problem and the development of new technologies or modification of existing techniques to meet users' requirements.

REPRINTS, WEB PAGES

Sea Technology—including Undersea Technology, Oceanology International Offshore Engineering, and Underwater Engineering—is protected under U.S. copyright laws. Reprinting and/or reproduction of any portion of the publications by printing or publication via electronic media—e.g., world wide web pages—is prohibited without prior written consent of Compass Publications, Inc.

COPY REQUIREMENTS

Your article submission package should include the following:

  • Manuscript
  • Floppy disk in MS Word or Works
  • Author photo(s)
  • Author(s) bio information
  • Illustrations (reflective art or as TIFF or EPS files)
  • Captions for photos or illustrations
  • Desktop Checklist (complete & submit with electronic images)

Format
Our magazine is prepared in Apple PowerMac® computers via QuarkXpress® desktop publishing software. Copy is edited with Microsoft Office 97 (Word 7.0). We currently request that all article manuscripts be submitted in hard copy and on standard floppy disks or CDs in MS Word or Works (any version). Please do not send Macintosh files or Mac-formatted disks.

Please do not embed graphic images or photographs within the manuscript text!
Send such illustrations as separate TIFF files.

Files may also be sent via e-mail to oceanbiz@sea-technology.com. If you are unable to provide electronic transfer, please submit article manuscripts via the U.S. Postal Service or FedEx. Article submission and all graphics should be saved on floppy disk, CD-ROM or Zip disk.

Copy length
Generally, Sea Technology accepts two kinds (and lengths) of articles. Feature article manuscripts range from 1,500 to 2,000 words [up to 10 typewritten (double-spaced) pages] (approximately 250 words/page), two to three illustrations and author information. Longer submissions—up to approximately 3,500-plus words—should be preceded by a query to the editor. Product application articles typically describe a single instrument or system in a specific or unique user application. These generally run at less than two magazine pages, which translates to a maximum of about 1,500 words (six typewritten pages), one or two illustrations, and author information.

Photo Captions
Descriptive material or short captions should be included with each photo or drawing—along with any photo credits.

Author information
Biographical information about the author(s) should be brief and concise, including descriptions of current responsibilities, research interests, accomplishments and prior related experience.
Please include a recent full-face photograph--passport type or clear snapshot.

Sea Technology has a new policy of a maximum of three authors per articles. Additional contributors can be named in an acknowledgements section.

PHOTOS & ILLUSTRATIONS

Sea Technology generally includes only two to three illustrations with each article due to space limitations.

Photographs
We require good quality images that are interesting and action-oriented. Our first preference is sharp color prints. Black and white glossy photographs or slides also acceptable. We can accept electronic color or black & white "photos" in high-resolution (300 dpi or greater), approximately
3" x 5" in size. We use only tagged image file format (TIFF) or encapsulated postscript (EPS) files. When sending color images, make sure they are in CMYK mode, not RGB.
Do not send color photos generated in MS Powerpoint or Word.

Desktop Checklist
Electronic images in separate TIFF, EPS or high-resolution PDF files must be accompanied by our Desktop Checklist form. We can accept a variety of disks/CD-ROMs in Mac or PC format, created in Adobe PhotoShop 6, QuarkXpress 4.1.1, or Freehand 5.0. Please indicate platform and program on the checklist. Laser or thermal copies of all illustrations must accompany the checklist. Copies of the checklist are available from Sea Technology and on this website.

Drawings and charts
High quality, clear line drawings, graphs, and charts are also welcome—either as camera-ready art or as a 300 dpi TIFF or EPS file. Some computer-generated line art with patterns is acceptable, but please avoid mixing background screens and typed callouts. Query first to be safe. All callouts or other text materials should be clear and readable if reduction to half-size (two magazine columns) or less is required.

Returns
All illustration materials (original slides, artwork) will be returned to contributors upon written request.

DEADLINES

Manuscripts and supporting materials solicited by Sea Technology editors are due approximately 30-45 days prior to the first day of an issue month. Manuscripts received after the deadline date will be automatically considered for publication in a subsequent issue, depending on available editorial space.

Unsolicited manuscripts intended for a particular "theme" issue will be considered for that issue if preceded by a query well before the deadline and if the above mentioned manuscript deadlines are met.

Postponements
Editorial space restrictions occasionally force the temporary postponement of articles scheduled for a particular issue. In that event, every effort will be made to contact the principal author for updates or revisions and to reschedule the article in a subsequent issue.

COVER PHOTOGRAPHS

Sea Technology is proud of its long history of dramatic covers. Editorial staff members continually seek outstanding, eye-catching photographs of subjects that are appropriate to the theme of each month's issue.

Requirements
Candidate photographs submitted for consideration as Sea Technology covers should be sent as 35mm color slides, transparencies, high-quality color prints or as high resolution TIFF electronic files (PLEASE NOTE: the dimension of images should be 8-1/2" x 11" at 300 dpi). Images must be oriented vertically with the top quarter of the image area "clean" with a plain background (clear sky, indistinct clouds, open water) to accommodate the Sea Technology logo material. Transparencies (2-1/4" square, etc.) may be either vertical or horizontal, provided the image area can be easily cropped to a suitable vertical format.

Restrictions
Sea Technology pays no honoraria for cover photos selected. Publication policy also prohibits the appearance of recognizable individuals or commercial tradenames and logos as part of the cover photograph. A brief description of the cover subject—along with credit to individual photographers or companies—appears as part of the "Contents" page inside.
