About the journal

RESEARCH IN NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION

Research in Nondestructive Evaluation will publish the results of original research in all areas of nondestructive evaluation (NDE). This journal will cover experimental and theoretical investigations dealing with scientific and engineering bases of NDE, its measurement methodology, and a wide range of applications of materials and structures that relate to the entire life cycle, from manufacture to use and retirement. Illustrative topics include advances in the underlying science of acoustic, thermal, electrical, magnetic, optical, and ionizing radiation techniques and their applications to NDE problems. These problems include nondestructive characterization of a wide variety of material properties and their degradation in service, nonintrusive sensors for monitoring manufacturing and materials processes, new techniques and combinations of techniques for characterizing hidden flaws and distributed damage, standardization concepts and quantitative approaches for advanced NDE techniques, and long-term continuous monitoring of structures and assemblies.

Instructions to Authors

 Manuscript Preparation

The journal strongly encourages the submission of electronic manuscripts prepared in the author's software of choice (WordPerfect 5.1, Microsoft Word, etc.) and saved as an ASCII (or print to disk) file. TEX files will also be accepted. (Note: Three copies of the manuscript - including figures and tables - should accompany the diskette.)

Manuscripts for this journal must be in English. Manuscripts should be typed single-sided, with double-spacing and wide margins throughout. Pages should be numbered consecutively and the manuscript should contain the following elements:

Title page. The first page should include the title of the article, the complete names and institutional affiliations of all authors. As separate items, list the complete name and address of the corresponding author and provide a short title to be used as a running head (not to exceed 50 characters).

Authors should continue to show the original date of receipt (as indicated by the Editor) on the title page of revised manuscripts.

Abstract. Each article should be prefaced by a brief abstract (less than 200 words).

Text. The text should be organized clearly and headings and subheadings should be indicated.

All mathematical symbols and Greek letters must be identified clearly. Subscripts and superscripts should be set off clearly and a zero should precede all decimal points. Principal equations should be displayed on separate lines and the following sequence of parentheses should be used: )]}. Equation numbers should be given in parentheses at the right-hand margin. Mathematical variables will be set in italics unless otherwise marked.

Illustrations. The name of the senior author, the figure number, and the top of the figure should be marked on the back of all art. Brief legends to the figures should be typed on a separate page and numbered consecutively in correspondence with the figures.

Line art should be supplied as black on white glossy prints and should be approximately twice the final size. If micrographs are used, all three copies of the manuscript must contain high quality micrographs for review purposes. Color photographs are acceptable, but must be paid for by the author (US $750 for up to two figures per page).

Tables. All tabulated data identified as tables should be given a table number and a descriptive caption. Tables should be typed on separate sheets.

Acknowledgments. Acknowledgments of collaboration or preparation may be included as a final page of the manuscript.

References. Within the text, references should be cited in numerical order, in brackets (e.g., [1, 5-8]).

References to technical journals will be made by author and journal title (with article title omitted). Journal abbreviations will be those used in the current listing of Physics Abstracts Service Source Index Quarterly.

1. J.E. Gubernatis, E. Domamy, and J. A. Krumhansl. J. Appl. Phys. 48:2804 (1977)

References to books will include the title and pages within the book.

2. H. S. Carslaw and J. C. Jaeger. Conduction of Heat in Solids 2nd ed., p. 125. Oxford University Press, London (1959)

A "private communication" or "unpublished research" may be referenced when required to give proper credit. The citation must include the affiliation and address of the person involved.

3. J. J. Doe., private communication, AAA Company, Washington, D. C. (January 1980)

Reprints: Reprints of an article may be ordered (in multiples of 100) from the publisher at the time the corresponding author returns corrected page proofs.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for Print

General

  • Send illustrations separately from the text (i.e. files should not be integrated with the text files).
  • Always send printouts of all illustrations.

Vector (line) Graphics

  • Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS format.
  • Suitable drawing program: Adobe Illustrator. For simple line art the following drawing programs are also acceptable: Corel Draw, Freehand, Canvas.
  • No rules narrower than .25 pt.
  • No gray screens paler than 15% or darker than 60%.
  • Screens meant to be differentiated from one another must differ by at least 15%.

Spreadsheet/Presentation Graphics

  • Most presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Freelance) produce data that cannot be stored in an EPS format. Therefore graphics produced by these programs cannot be used for print.

Halftone Illustrations

  • Black & white and color illustrations should be saved in TIFF format.
  • Illustrations should be created using Adobe Photoshop whenever possible.

Scans*

  • Scanned reproductions of black and white photographs should be provided as 300 ppi TIFF files.
  • Scanned color illustrations should be provided as TIFF files scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi with a 24-bit color depth.
  • Line art should be provided as TIFF files at 600 ppi.

* We do prefer having the original art as our printers have drum scanners which allow for better reproduction of critical medical halftones.

Graphics from Videos

  • Separate files should be prepared for frames from a video that are to be printed in the journal. When preparing these files you should follow the same rules as listed under Halftone Illustrations.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for ONLINE

Video

  • MPEG (.mpg) is the preferred format, but .rm, .avi, .mov, etc. are acceptable.
  • No video file should be larger than 2MB. To decrease the size of your file, consider changing one or more of the following variables: frame speed, number of colors/greys, viewing size (in pixels), or compression. Video is subject to Editorial review and approval.
