Basic information
|
Published every two months, Qu铆mica Nova is the official organ of the Sociedade Brasileira de Qu铆mica - SBQ.
The journal publishes articles in Portuguese, Spanish and English, with the results of original researches, review articles, notes on new methods and technics, education and general issues in the area of chemistry.
Articles submitted to the journal are analysed by ad hoc reviewers. Publication of Qu铆mica Nova is in the charge of the editorial board, and its policy and planning are responsibility of the advisory editorial board.
Its abbreviated title is Qu铆m. nova, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips. |

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if accepted for publication, copyright of the article shall be assigned to the Sociedade Brasileira de Qu铆mica.
Copyright encompasses exclusive rights to reproduce and deliver the article in all form and media, including reprints, photographs, microfilms and any other similar reproductions, as well as translations. INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Guidelines for publication
|
GENERAL - Articles suitable for publication in the journal Qu铆mica Nova are those that cover the traditional fields of chemistry, as well as articles on chemical education, the history of chemistry, science policy, etc., besides articles on related fields, as long as they have a substantial chemical content. Articles should conform to one of the categories below:
Original Articles (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating original research. Articles should follow the usual form of presentation, including introduction, results, experimental section, etc., as appropriate for the work being submitted. They should have a maximum of 25 pages, including figures, tables, diagrams, etc. All pages should be numbered.
Review Articles (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating progress in a specific field of chemistry, with the objective of providing a critical account of the state of the art from the point of view of the highly qualified and experienced specialist. They should have a maximum of 40 pages, including figures, tables, diagrams, etc. All pages should be numbered.
It is essential for authors to have publications in the field reviewed attesting their experience and qualification. Before submitting the manuscript, authors should send an e-mail to the editors with an abstract of the review and a letter explaining the relevance of the publication. The material will be examined by the editors and, once approved, authors will be requested to submit the full manuscript, according to QN guidelines. This manuscript will then be submitted to referees.
The editorial board of QN may occasionally invite qualified researchers to submit a review article.
Articles on Education (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating research on the teaching of chemistry and for disseminating innovative experiments in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. They should have a maximum of 25 pages, including figures, tables, diagrams, etc. All pages should be numbered.
Technical Notes (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating methods, validation of methods, techniques, equipment and accessories developed in the author's laboratory. They should have a maximum of 25 pages, including figures, tables, diagrams, etc. All pages should be numbered.
General Subjects (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): subjects of general interest for chemists, such as science policy, undergraduate and post-graduate programs, history of chemistry, etc. They should have a maximum of 40 pages, including figures, tables, diagrams, etc. All pages should be numbered. |

Preparation of manuscripts
|
All manuscripts should be typed double spaced using only Microsoft Word. A single file of the whole manuscript should then be generated in .pdf-format to be submitted through QN's on-line system. The Journal no longer accepts submissions in any other form.
The first page should have the title of the article and the name and the address of the authors. If authors have different addresses, these should follow each author's name immediately. Authors should be grouped by address. The corresponding author should be the one submitting the article on line and should be identified by an asterisk (*) and an e-mail given on the page's footer (only one e-mail).
The second page should have the title and an abstract of the article, both in English, with a maximum of 100 words, and three keywords, also in English.
The number of figures (including graphs, diagrams, etc.) should not exceed 7 and should be of adequate graphic quality (only white background). For more figures, see the item Supplementary Materials. Figures, tables, diagrams, etc., should be placed after the references, duly identified by a number. Scanned figures should be at a resolution of 800 dpi/bitmap for line graphs. Diagrams containing chemical structures should be of high graphical quality and always be of the same size, so that they can be uniformly reduced. Figures should have a maximum width of one Journal column (8.5 cm).
Color figures will have their publication costs charged to the authors when the article is ready for publication. Only at that time can the printer inform the amount to be charged.
For figures, graphs, diagrams, tables, etc., identical to material already published in the literature, authors should seek permission for publication from the companies or scientific societies holding the copyrights and send it to the editors of QN together with the final form of the manuscript.
References should be numbered consecutively throughout the text, in the form of superscripts, following punctuation marks (if any). The list of references should be placed at the end of the text. Captions for figures, graphs and diagrams should be given on a separate page, not together with the figures. Table headings should be given with the tables. The final part of the manuscript should be the figures, graphs, diagrams, tables and charts. In the text, the insertion point of each of these should be indicated.

Journal abbreviations should be used, as defined by the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (see http://www.cas.org/sent.html). If the official short form can not be determined and it is not obvious how to abbreviate the title, the full journal title should be given.

Submission of articles
|
QN provides on-line submission which can be accessed through a login and a password. It is possible to register on our home page (http://quimicanova.sbq.org.br) using the option New User. Users of the JBCS platform are already recorded in the database (which is common to both journals) and should use the same login and password. After having registered, authors can easily follow on-screen instructions. The submission of a single file of the complete manuscript in .pdf format is requested. A tool is available for generating a .pdf file from .doc or .rtf files, with automatic transmission to the author's e-mail. As soon as submission is completed, the system will inform automatically by e-mail a temporary number for the manuscript. After the submission has been checked by the editors, another e-mail will be sent with the final manuscript reference code.
If the e-mail with the temporary reference number is not received, submission of the article has not been completed and authors have a maximum of 5 (five) days to complete it. Thereafter the system does not allow submitting the manuscript and the process has to be started over again.
Authors can follow the status of manuscripts directly through the system.
On submitting an article, an accompanying letter is requested, which should be typed in the appropriate space provided on the electronic form. In this letter, the e-mails of all authors must be given. Also, the names, affiliation and e-mails of three or four prospective referees, which should not belong to the same institution(s) as the authors, should be given.
Supplementary material This resource was created so that the printed version of the manuscript would contain only the strictly necessary number of figures and tables (6 or 7 single figures). Since this material will be available only in the on-line version, figures, tables and diagrams in color, presented as supplementary material, will not be charged to authors and there is no page limit. However, the material should be of good graphical quality.
Supplementary material should be placed at the end of the manuscript and clearly indicated as such. A single .pdf-document, including the supplementary material, should be submitted.
Editors, at any time of the editing process, may ask authors to split off part of the manuscript, presenting it as supplementary material. |

Revised manuscripts
|
Manuscripts returned to authors for revision should be sent back to the editors within three months. Thereafter they will be considered withdrawn and the system will close the process, not allowing it to be reopened. In this case, the article has to be resubmitted, starting a new process.
The revised manuscript should be submitted by the author who originally submitted the article, using the same login and password. On-screen instructions should be followed for sending the complete .pdf-document of the revised version, as well as for answering the referees' comments, detailing changes made in the new version and, in case some of the referees' suggestions were not accepted, justifying the reason for this. The two files should be sent using the link Revised Version on the Author's Home page of the on-line submission system of QN.
As soon as submission is completed, the system will inform automatically by e-mail a temporary number for the manuscript. After the submission has been checked by the editors, another e-mail will be sent with the final manuscript reference code.
If the e-mail with the temporary reference number is not received, submission of the article has not been completed and authors have a maximum of 5 (five) days to complete it. Thereafter the system does not allow submitting the manuscript and the process has to be started over again.
Authors can follow the status of manuscripts directly through the system.
FINAL VERSION At the time the final version is requested, authors will receive specific instructions regarding programs to be used for preparing text, figures, tables, etc. Files in .pdf-format will then no longer be asked for.
If figures are scanned, this should be done at high resolution (800 dpi/bitmap for lines) using extensions tif or jpg, at the dimensions specified by the editors. Photographs or drawings in color (300 dpi/grayscale) should have extensions tif or jpg and a maximum width of 8.5 cm, so that they can be applied to the standards of the Journal. Other possible extensions: cdr, eps, cdx or opj. Schemes of chemical structures should all be of the same size, so that they can be uniformly reduced.
The editors of QN reserve the right to make small changes to the manuscript, if necessary, to adjust them to the norms of the Journal or improve the style, respecting naturally the content of the article. Whatever the nature of the manuscript, it should be original in terms of methodology, information, interpretation or critique. The quality of the article will be attested by two referees, indicated by the editors. |
