Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology & Hydrogeology is published by the Geological Society and is an established international journal with a circulation of nearly 4000 in 47 countries. Papers are invited from, and about, all areas of the world on topics concerning geology as applied to civil engineering, mining practise and water resources, including: applied geophysics, engineering geomorphology, environmental geology, hydrogeology, groundwater quality, contaminated land, waste management, land use planning, geotechnics, rock mechanics, geomaterials and geological hazards. The journal includes the prestigious Glossop and Ineson lectures, research papers case histories, review articles, technical notes, photographics features, book reviews and periodic reports. |

Instructions to Authors
Typescripts and all editorial correspondence should be addressed to the QJEG Staff Editor, The Geological Society Publishing House, Unit 7, Brassmill Enterprise Centre, Brassmill Lane, Bath BA1 3JN, UK. Papers should not have been submitted or published elsewhere, and they become copyright of the Geological Society.
Papers on major topics of international interest in engineering geology and hydrogeology are welcomed; those of local interest may not be suitable. Normally papers should not exceed ten pages, including references, tables and figures: there are c. 900 words on a printed page. Papers longer than ten pages require special editorial approval. Photofeatures and Technical Notes are also invited.
Two complete hardcopies and one Word or RTF file on floppy disk, and all original line drawings and photographs should be sent to the Staff Editor who will acknowledge their receipt. Typescripts must be accurate and in their final format, in the style and layout outlined below. Those which do not comply may be returned to the author for modification. Owing to the high cost of corrections at proof stage, the editors reserve the right to charge authors the full cost of corrections resulting from afterthoughts and additions at proof stage.
Text and references should be double spaced and single column on one side only of A4 paper, with a 25 mm margin on each side. All pages should bear the author's name and be numbered serially. Papers should be succinct and arranged as follows: Title: brief and specific, maximum 12 words. Full name(s) and address(es) of author(s). Where there is more than one author, state who will be the corresponding author. Abstract: this must be intelligible without reference to the paper, and should not exceed 200 words (100 words for short papers). It should be a condensation of the essential new information and interpretations in the paper, and not a mere recital of the subjects covered. Main body of paper: subdivided as unnumbered sections and subsections. In all cases metric units must be used and measurements given in mm, m and km. Do not use cm. Appendices: see Supplementary Publications below. References: see below. Tables: each to be typed on a separate sheet. Figure captions: Plates and Figures are numbered serially as figures. A full set of photocopies of Figures is required.
References
In the reference list, all authors must be cited and the references given in full, including volume number and start and end page numbers where appropriate. Where a publication to which reference is made is not given in English but the reference is a translation of the title, the language of the original article or book must be given. List only those references cited in the text. Please don抰 use ditto rules ?we have changed our house style recently.
Illustrations
Diagrams should be drawn with a line weight and lettering suitable for reduction to fit either single or double column width. Avoid fine stippling. The author's name should be given on each sheet and 'top' indicated. All maps should include metric scale and north point (or, where relevant, coordinates of latitude and longitude, or National grid). Large folding figures and coloured maps and photographs will be accepted only when publication is assisted by a subvention.
Where possible, diagrams should be supplied on disc, accompanied by good quality hard copy. Acceptable graphics packages are Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator and Aldus Freehand. EPS files of computer-generated diagrams are needed (or high-resolution TIFFs for photos etc). Any queries on the format of electronic artwork accepted, should be directed to the Staff Editor. Please save your diagrams on a separate disc from the text (CD-ROMs and Zip discs are OK). Make sure that scales and north arrows are included where appropriate. Photos must have scale bars ?not multiplication factors in the caption. Do not put a frame round your illustrations unless it is an integral part of the diagram.
Please check the electronic files for all computer-generated diagrams in your paper. You must ensure that fine lines are saved as actual line widths of at least 0.5 point, and not as defaults such as hairline, minimum width etc. Such defaults will print at the minimum line weight for the output device. On a laser printer it is usually 0.5 pt, but on a high-resolution output device such as a film-setter it could be too fine to show up in print. There is no way that we can pick up this problem. It cannot be detected in proofs, which are produced with a laser printer. If you have used such defaults and cannot easily change them, then we will have to scan your figures. Please ensure that we have high quality hard copies with no grey tints or fine stipple. Although we will do our best to ensure that the highest quality is maintained at all stages, The Society cannot accept any responsibility for lines that disappear when printed if they were created using default settings.
Offprints may be ordered on the form provided at proof stage. Fifty free copies are supplied.
Discussion of papers: Short discussions (maximum 750 words on papers which have already appeared in the journal are acceptable. Two copies should be submitted; the title and author(s) of the paper discussed should be clearly indicated.
Supplementary Publications
Detailed material (e.g. in appendices) can be made available as Supplementary Publications. Such items include locality lists, tables of chemical and other analyses, details of techniques, stratigraphic sections, maps, cross sections, borehole data, mathematical derivations, and computer printouts. These will be stored at the British Library Document Supply Centre, Boston Spa, UK, and the Geological Society Library, and made available at the Journal's on line web site or as photocopies or microfiches upon payment. Sections of typescript suitable for deposition may be indicated by authors and may be recommended by editors and referees. )
