The Editors reserve the right to make editorial and literary corrections. Any opinions expressed or policies advocated do not necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the editors.
AIMS AND SCOPE Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics is concerned with lung pharmacology from molecular to clinical aspects. The subject matter encompasses the major diseases of the lung (including asthma, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary circulation, ARDS, carcinoma, bronchitis, emphysema) and drug delivery. Laboratory and clinical research on man and animals will be considered including studies related to chemotherapy of cancer, tuberculosis and infection. In addition to original research papers the journal will include review articles and book reviews.
PRESENTATION OF MANUSCRIPTS Papers should be submitted in journal style. Failure to do so may lead to significant delays to publication. Papers should be typed in double spacing on A4 bond paper (210 x 297 mm) with a margin of at least 30 mm all round. Three copies of the manuscript and illustrations should be submitted and the author should retain a copy for reference.
COPYRIGHT In order for us to ensure maximum dissemination and copyright protection of material published in the journal, copyright must be explicitly transferred from author to publisher. The copyright transfer agreement to be used for the Journal is forwarded to the author with the offprint order form and page proofs of the paper.
FULL PAPERS Papers should be set out as follows, with each section beginning on a separate sheet: title page, summary, text, acknowledgements, references, tables, captions to illustrations.
Title Page The title page should give the following information (1) title of the article, (2) initial and name of each author,(3)name and address of the department or institution to which the work should be attributed, (4) name and address of the author responsible for correspondence and to whom requests for offprints should be sent and (5) a short running title of not more than 70 characters.
Summary This should consist of not more than 200 words summarising the contents of the article.
Keywords A list of five keywords should follow the summary.
Text Papers can be subdivided as the author desires, in accordance with the standard conventions; the use of headings in such papers enhances readability. Normally only two categories of heading should be used: major ones should be typed in capital letters in the centre of the page and underlined; minor ones should be typed in lower case with an initial capital letter, at the left hand margin and underlined.
References The accuracy of references is the responsibility of the author. References should be entered consecutively by superior numbering in the text. The reference list should be listed in numerical order on a separate sheet in double or triple spacing. References to journals should include the author's name and initials, full title of paper, Journal's title abbreviated, using Index Medicus approved abbreviations, year of publication, volume number, first and last page numbers.
For example: 6. Abrams P H, Roylance J, Feneley R C. Excretion urography in the investigation of prostatism. Br J Urol 1976; 48: 681-684.
References to books should be set out as follows: 2. Pinckard R N, McManus L M, Halonen M, Hanahan D J. Immunopharmacology of acetyl glycerol ether phosphorylcholine (AGEPC). In: Newball H H ed. Immunopharmacology of the lung. New York: Marcel Dekker, 1984; 73-103.
Tables These should be typed double spaced on separate sheets and contain only horizontal rules. A short descriptive title with a clear legend should appear above each table and any footnotes suitably identified below. Care must be taken to ensure that all units are included.
REVIEW ARTICLES Articles reviewing recent developments in the areas covered by the journal (see Aims and Scope) will be considered for publication, after discussion with an editor. These should consist of not more than 5000 words of text, 4-5 illustrations.
BOOK REVIEWS Book reviews may be submitted to either of the Editors-in-Chief.
ILLUSTRATIONS Line Illustrations Line drawings should be on quality ink board with a smooth white surface (such as Bristol Board) and drawn in black ink. All lines should be solid with crisply defined edges, and the ink must remain true black throughout. They should be about twice the size of the final reproduction. Bromide prints made from the original line drawings are acceptable, but the quality criteria are the same as for the original artwork.
Photographic Illustrations and Radiographs These should be submitted as clear, highly contrasted black and white prints (unmounted). Photomicrographs should have the magnification and details of staining techniques shown. X-ray film should be submitted as photographic prints, carefully made to bring out the detail to be illustrated, with an overlay indicating the area of importance. Figures should be submitted appropriately lettered in capitals. The size of the letters should be appropriate to that of the illustration, taking into account the necessary size reduction.
Line illustrations and photographs should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and author's name, and the top of the figure should be indicated by an arrow. A soft crayon should be used for this. Never use ink of any kind . Captions should be typed, double spaced on separate sheets from the main manuscript. The publisher will not charge authors for colour figures, where its use is integral to useful illustration of the data.
PAGE PROOFS Page proofs are sent to the author for checking. The proofs, with any minor corrections, must be returned to the Production Editor, Journals Publishing Services, Harcourt Publishers Limited, 32 Jamestown Road, London NW1 7BY, UK within 7 days of receipt.
PROPRIETARY NAMES Proprietary names of drugs, instruments, etc. should be indicated by the use of initial capital letters.
ABBREVIATIONS AND UNITS All measurements should be expressed in SI units. Imperial units are acceptable from US contributors. For more detailed recommendations, authors may consult the Royal Society of Medicine publication entitled Units, Symbols and Abbreviations: A Guide for Biological and Medical Editors and Authors.
OFFPRINTS Twenty-five free offprints are supplied to the first-named or nominated author. An offprint order form will be sent with the page proofs.
MANSCRIPT SUBMISSION ON DISK When supplying the final version of your article please include, if possible, a disk of your manuscript prepared on PC-compatible or Apple Macintosh computers, along with the hard copy print-out. 51/4" or 31/2" sized disks and most word processing packages are acceptable, although a version of WordPerfect or Microsoft Word would be preferred.
Please follow these guidelines carefully: Include an ASCII version on the disk, together with the word processed version, if possible.
Ensure that the files are not saved as read only.
Manuscripts prepared on disk must be accompanied by three hard copies, including all figures, printed with double spacing. These will be used if setting from the disk proves impracticable.
Ensure the final version of the hard copy and the file are the same. It is the author's responsibility to ensure complete compatibility. If there are any differences the hard copy will be used. The directions for preparing the paper in the style of the journal as set out in the Information for Contributors must be followed. Please consult the current issue of Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, especially for the style of references. The manuscript should be arranged as follows: Title; Authors; Addresses; Running heads; Abstract; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgements; References; Appendices; Figure Legends; Tables; Footnotes; Abbreviations. Do not include figure in the text; these should be supplied separately.
The operating system and the word processing software used to produce the article should be noted on the disk (e.g. DOX/WordPerfect), as well as all file names. If UNIX, method of extraction should also be noted.
The disk/tape should be labelled with the author name(s), hardware and software used to generate the disk file.
Do not include copyright material, e.g. word processing software or operating system files on the disk as this can create difficulties with Customs clearance.
Package floppy disks in such a way as to avoid possible damage in the post.
Additional points to note Use 2 carriage returns to end headings and paragraphs.
Type text throughout without end of line justification hypenation, except for compound words.
Do not use lower case letter 'l' (el) for 1 (one) or letter 'O' for 0 (zero). (They have different typesetting values).
Footnotes, tables and figure captions should be keyed and saved in a separate file from the main text for the manuscript. However, please ensure clear hard copies are supplied as they will almost certainly be typeset from the hard copy.
Be consistent with punctuation and only insert a single space between words after punctuation (including full stops).
Please include a list of any special characters you have used, e.g. Greek, maths.
Illustrations submitted on disk Authors' illustrations should also, if possible, be supplied as both hard copy and electronic files. Figures drawn using Aldus Freehand (Apple Macintosh) and saved as Encapsulated PostScript files (EPS) are preferred and should be supplied on a separate disk.
