This bimonthly publication focuses and places in context the rapidly changing issues which concern public health professionals as they manage today's system and invent the next decade's. The Journal's highly respected contributors provide a vehicle for remaining on the cutting edge of current thinking and research in the field.
Instructions to Authors
Submission Policy Manuscripts will be considered for publication that present original research and evaluation studies, program evaluation and reports, as well as those addressing educational, occupational and practice issues deemed to be of interest to our readers.
Submission of a paper implies that it reports unpublished work, except in abstract form, and is not being submitted simultaneously to another publication. Accepted manuscripts become the sole property of Public Health Nursing and may not be published elsewhere without consent from the publisher.
All articles are subject to review by experienced referees. The Editors and Editorial Board judge manuscripts suitable for publication, and decisions by the Editors are final. Material accepted for publication is copy-edited and typeset. Proofs are sent to contributors for final review. Contributors are responsible for the entire content of the copy-edited article. Extensive changes to the proofs other than printer's errors, will be charged to the contributors and could delay publication.
Address for Contributors
Submit three copies of the manuscript - the original and two duplicates - plus all artwork to:
Katherine Young Graham, Ph.D., FAAN Editor P.O. Box 549 Mukilteo, WA 98275 USA Tel: (425) 290-3048 E-mail: phnjournal@juno.com
Form of Manuscript The entire manuscript should be typed double-spaced using 1?inch margins on standard white heavy-duty bond. Do not use erasable paper. Submit the original typescript and two high-quality photocopies of all elements of the manuscript. Manuscript to be unbound and unstapled. Keep a copy of the manuscript for your reference.
Place senior author's name in the upper right-hand corner of the first page, then number pages consecutively in this order: title page, abstract, text, references, tables, figure legends. Include original figures in a protective folder along with the manuscript.
Title Page On the title page, provide the complete title and a brief title (not to exceed 45 letters and spaces) for use as a running head. Include a list of key words which appear in the manuscript. List each contributor's name, academic degrees, and institutional affiliation. Provide the name, address, and telephone number of the contributor responsible for the manuscript and proofs. Include fax number and e-mail address. This is the person to whom reprints will be sent.
Abstract The abstract may have up to 200 words. It should summarize the problems presented and describe the studies undertaken, results, and conclusions.
Text The text of the manuscript should be in the following sequence: abstract, introduction, text, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. Type footnotes (double-spaced) on the bottom of the page on which they are mentioned. Cite all tables and figures in the text, numbering them sequentially as they are cited.
References References must follow the author-date method, in which the last name of the author and the year of publication are inserted in parentheses in the text at an appropriate point. If a work has two authors, cite both names in every reference. If a work has more than two authors, cite all authors at the first reference, then only the first author and "et al." for all following references. The citation of a specific page, chapter, or figure should be made with the reference in the text, not in the reference list.
The reference list should appear alphabetically by main author's last name and conform to the style used by the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association, latest edition. Journal titles are not abbreviated, and the initial letter of all major words are capitalized. Book and journal titles, and volume numbers, are underlined and will appear in italics when typeset. For article, chapter, and book titles, only the initial letter of the first word is capitalized, except for proper names, and other common usage. All references must be verified by the author(s). Sample references follow. Pay special attention to the punctuation.

Tables Tables should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets and numbered consecutively within the text. Tables and text should not duplicate each other. If possible, hold tables to one standard manuscript page; if the table continues past one page, repeat all heads and the stub (left-hand column). Explain all abbreviations in a footnote. Provide a number and title for each table.
Figure Legends Each figure must have a corresponding legend which must be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet of paper. Do not attach the legends to the figures. Each legend must be numbered with an Arabic numeral to correspond to the illustration as it appears in the text. Explain all symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters used in the figure and provide information on scale and/or magnification. For photomicrographs, include information on the method of staining.
Figures Note that the original and two copies of all illustrations must be submitted. Illustrations should be submitted unmounted. Do not trim or write on the back; do not use paper clips. Attach a gummed label to the back of each illustration giving the figure number, author's name, and an arrow to indicate the top of the figure.
Have artwork drawn by an experienced illustrator. Labels and callouts should be done by preset type or template letters, not by hand. The labels should be legible when the figure is reduced to column width. The publisher does not reconstruct artwork. Black-and-white photostats (5" x 7") of drawn materials should be supplied, not the illustrator's original art.
For halftones (photographs, photomicrographs), clear black-and-white prints must be submitted. For photographs of recognizable subjects, submit a signed release form from the patient authorizing publication. Photomicrographs must have internal scale markers.
Indicate crop marks on tracing paper overlays. Arrows, indicators, or letters can be applied using a professional graphic transfer product (such as Chartpak). Consider clarity after reduction.
Cite each figure in the text by its number. Figures should be numbered consecutively as they appear in the text. If a figure has been previously published, permission must be received in writing for its use regardless of authorship or publisher. Acknowledgment of the original source must be included in the legend.
Details of Style Give all measurements in metric units. Use generic names of drugs. Adhere to acceptable English usage and syntax; avoid jargon, euphemistic phrasing, and obscure terms. Standard abbreviations, units, and acronyms are allowed. The first time an abbreviation or acronym is used, it should be preceded by the full name for which it stands.
Credits and Permissions In addition to the notice of informed consent and releases to publish photographs of recognizable persons, submit with the manuscript written permission to use nonoriginal material (quotations exceeding 100 words, any table, or figure) from both author and publisher of the original. Credit the source in a text or table footnote or at the end of a figure legend.
Proofs and Offprints Proofs must be returned within 48 hours of receipt; late return may cause a delay in publishing the article.
