About the journal

Proceedings of the Geologists' Association

The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, published since 1859, is the quarterly journal of the Geologists' Association, published by the Geological Society. It incorporates original research and review papers on all aspects of geology, publishes reports of field meetings, correspondence relating to previously published articles, short communications and timely book reviews. Papers are subject to full scrutiny by two independent referees. Occasional thematic issues contain linked papers on particular topics.

Instructions to Authors

1. Text preparation

Refer to the current ‘Instructions for Authors’ regarding general preparation of papers that can be found on the inside back cover of recent issues. The wordprocessed text should be in single-column format and double-spaced. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible. Points to note:

avoid using any ‘tab’ or ‘indent’ or centring facility to display any headings, lists or quoted material;

compile figure captions separately from the main text;

for species names or other words requiring an italic font, use the wordprocessor’s facility for italic, or underline.

Similarly, for any key terms requiring a bold font, use the wordprocessor facility;

tables will be processed separately; please use Word and presnt as proper tables in columns and rows;

do not integrate figures and tables within the text or leave space for them, but you can indicate on the manuscript where you would like these to go.

2. Graphics

If possible, line illustrations should be supplied as good quality hard copy plus an electronic file. The host graphics packages are Adobe Illustrator, Aldus Freehand and Coreldraw. Because these packages are upgraded so frequently, you must save the figures in both their application file and as an Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) file or Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). If you have used a drawing package other than listed here, please save your figs as EPS files to enable access.

Please ensure you save your EPS files with all fonts and logos embedded as part of the file. If you do not, you will lose shading ornaments and fonts will default.

The EPS files should have a bounding box enclosing the figure only and not the whole page.

Ensure that fine lines are saved as actual line widths of at least 0.5 pt, and not as defaults such as hairline, minimum width etc. Such defaults will print at the minimum line weight for the output device. On a laser printer it is usually 0.5 pt, but on a high-resolution output device such as a filmsetter anything less could be too fine to show up in print.

Halftone illustrations (photos) should be supplied as original prints and we will scan. Avoid scanning these yourself.

Graphic files can be accepted on 3 1/2" floppy disc, Iomega Zip 100 disc or CD (all PC or Mac formatted).

3. Submission

The final, revised, text should be submitted in both manuscript (hard copy) and electronic form.

Store the main text separate from the figure captions and (if you prefer) references. If supplying graphics files, save these on a separate disc from the text. Give each file a clearly identifiable name.

For the text, the preferred packages are Word or WordPerfect. If you have room, please also supply an ASCII file and save the text as an additional Rich Text Format (RTF) file.

Indicate the name and version of the packages used (please use form provided below).

Ensure that the hard copy manuscript and disc versions are identical. Any last minute changes must be noted in red on the hard copy.
