About the journal
Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia
The Proceedings was first published in 1841, to supersede the first series of the Journal. At first it was published intermittently, then it became an annual publication, continuing to today. Many volumes, even from the 1800s, are still available for purchase
The Proceedings accepts papers in the areas of systematics, taxonomy, evolution, biogeography, and ecology. Certain specialized historical reviews are also considered. After preliminary review by the Editor, papers will be sent to peer reviewers.
Instructions to Authors
WHAT TO SUBMIT. Three paper copies of the manuscript and all illustrations must be sent via regular mail. Electronic submissions are not appropriate at this stage. The manuscript must be arranged in the following order: abstract, full text, acknowledgements, literature cited, tables, figure legends. All illustrations and tables must be separate from the text. Also include the names and addresses of three potential peer reviewers; include their e-mail addresses if available. Manuscripts that do not comply with the specifications listed here and below will be returned to the author.
FORMAT. Manuscripts must be in English; multi-lingual abstracts are permitted when necessary.
Typewritten manuscripts will not be accepted. No material shall be handwritten.
Manuscripts must be double-spaced, in any clear printing font. Leave adequate margins of at least 1 inch, or 3.5 cm, on all sides. If "A4" or another paper size not standard in the U.S.A. is used, leave at least 2 inches (or 5 cm) of space at the bottom of each page. (Standard USA size is 8.5 x 11 inches.)
ILLUSTRATIONS. Do not incorporate illustrations in the text of the paper. Printed versions of all illustrations must accompany the manuscript. Do not submit any illustrations electronically at this time. Xerographic copies of illustrations may accompany the review copies of the manuscript only if they adequately and clearly show all pertinent information. Otherwise, photographic reproductions of illustrations must accompany each copy of the manuscript.
All original artwork and photographs should be in the form of glossy prints of professional quality. Line illustrations may be produced from a high-density laser printer only if they are clear and of professional quality. Illustrations should be proportioned to fit one or two columns on the printed Proceedings page. The maximum block sizes are (width x height): one-column illustration--2.8 x 8.6 inches (7.1 x 21.8 cm); two-column illustration--5.9 x 8.6 inches (15.0 x 21.8 cm). Adequate space should be subtracted to accommodate a figure legend beneath each figure, if possible. Labelling on an illustration must be of professional quality, using a font and size that will be clear and aesthetically pleasing particularly if it is to be reduced in size for publication. Typewritten labelling is not acceptable.
Color illustrations are acceptable, but all costs incurred in preparing them for publication and in printing them must be paid for by the author.
TABLES. Do not incorporate tables into the text of the manuscript. Each table must be separate. Each table must begin on a new page. If a table is wider than one page, its manuscript form must be taped and folded so that the table forms a contiguous whole.
LITERATURE CITED. All journal and book titles must be spelled out in full. No journal-title abbreviations are allowed. For bibliographical style, follow the following formats. Note that italics are used only for scientific names and to indicate individually authored papers in a longer, edited volume.
