About the journal

Precision Engineering - Journal of the International Societies for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology

Precision Engineering - Journal of the International Societies for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology is devoted to the multidisciplinary study and practice of high accuracy engineering, metrology, and manufacturing. The journal takes an integrated approach to all subjects related to research, design, manufacture, performance validation, and application of high precision machines, instruments, and components, including fundamental and applied research and development in manufacturing processes, fabrication technology, and advanced measurement science. The scope includes precision-engineered systems and supporting metrology over the full range of length scales, from atom-based nanotechnology and advanced lithographic technology to large-scale systems, including optical and radio telescopes and macrometrology.

 Cover Page

Precision Engineering was first published in January 1979; since 1986 it has also been known to many of its readers as the Journal of the American Society of Precision Engineering. Now, with effect from January 2000, it assumes a new look, proudly proclaiming itself the Journal of the International Societies for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology.

In addition to its continuing association with the American Society for Precision Engineering (ASPE), the journal is now associated with two further bodies: the newly established european society for precision engineering and nanotechnology (euspen) and the Japan Society for Precision Engineering (JSPE), founded in 1933.

Authors are requested to submit four copies of their original manuscript and figures. To expedite the reviewing process, authors are asked to submit to the most appropriate address of the following:

Members of ASPE and euspen: send your manuscript to the Precision Engineering Editorial Office, PO Box 10826, Raleigh, NC 27605-0826, USA (Tel: +1 (919) 839-8444, Fax: +1 (919) 839-8039)
Members of JSPE: send your manuscript to Editorial Committee, JSPE, Kudanseiwa-Bulding 2F, 1-5-9 Kudankita, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan 102-0073 (Tel: +81-3-5226-5191, Fax: +81-3-5226-5192)
Authors with no society affiliation: send your manuscript to the Precision Engineering Editorial Office, PO Box 10826, Raleigh, NC 27605-0826, USA Alternatively, manuscripts can be emailed to ilka_lee@aspe.net. Electronic submissions must also be followed by submission of two hard copies. (The electronic submission will speed up the review process and the paper copies will assure that the electronic submission was received correctly).

The language of the journal is English.

Papers will be reviewed and assessed by independent referees.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Types of Contribution

Articles (surveys, reviews, etc) usually planned in consultation with an Editor-in-Chief;
Original papers on development research work;
Technical notes on new techniques and devices;
Brief research reports describing current projects and giving the trend of results;
Conference reports, book reviews, etc, planned in consultation with an Editor;
Letters containing comments on any aspect of precision engineering, discussion of previously published papers, or advance informal reports of research work

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. All pages should be numbered consecutively. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: title (an abbreviated title of less than 40 characters [including spaces] should also be suggested), authors and affiliations, abstract, keywords, main text (divided into numbered sections and subsections), acknowledgements, appendices, references, figures, figure captions and then tables. Do not import the figures or tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript arabic numbers.

Mathematics: Mathematical symbols and formulae should be typed. Particular care should be exercised in identifying all symbols and in avoiding ambiguities. Distinction should be made between the number one (1) and the letter l, and between zero (0) and the letter O. Vectors and tensors should be marked clearly on the manuscript, and authors are encouraged to follow standard conventions for setting mathematics in print. Equation numbers should appear in parentheses and be numbered consecutively. All equation numbers must appear on the right-hand side of the equation and should be referred to within the text. Use the following sequence of parentheses: )]}.

Units: SI units should always be used; engineering equivalents may be given in brackets afterwards.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text make references using a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. "Since Peterson [1] has shown..."), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
References should be given in the following form:

[1] Ludwick SJ, Chargin DA, Calzaretta JA, Trumper DL. Design of a rotary fast tool servo for ophthalmic lens fabrication. Prec Eng 1999; 23;236-242.
[2] Redhead PA, Hobson JP, Kornelson EV. The Physical Basis of Ultrahigh Vacuum. New York: American Institute of Physics, 1993.
[3] McAdams HT, Picciano LA, Reese PA. A computer method for hypsometric analysis of abrasive surfaces. In: Tobias SA, Konigsburger F. editors: Proceedings of the 9th MTDR Conference, Birmingham, England. 1968. Oxford: Pergamon Press, 1968. pp 1149-71.

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all considered to be figures. They are to be referred to as 'Fig. 1', 'Fig. 2', etc, and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.

Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white, or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.

Colour: Authors will be charged for colour at current printing costs.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Disk Submission

After acceptance of their paper, authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with two printed copies of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. The corresponding author should supply a full postal address, and where possible, a fax number. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department of the relevant Elsevier Science site.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints will incur a 50&percent; surcharge.
