PPS cover page

PPS publishes original research reports on field crops and resource plants, their production and related subjects, covering a wide range of sciences; physiology, biotechnology, morphology, ecology, cropping system, production technology and post harvest management. Studies on plant production with special attention to resource management and the environment are also welcome. Field surveys on cropping or farming system are also accepted. Articles with a background in other research areas such as soil science, meteorology, biometry, product process and plant protection will be accepted as long as they are significantly related to plant production.

Instructions to Authors

General Requirements

Plant Production Science (PPS) is an international research journal published by the Crop Science Society of Japan (CSSJ) in yearly volumes of four issues. Submitted papers must be scientific reports of original research written in English and its essential contents must not have been published in other scientific journals. The first-named author of a paper must be an individual subscriber to PPS. For subscription rates, refer to "Subscription and Submission to Plant Production Science".

Type of Papers

Regular papers and short reports will be accepted for publication after editorial review. A regular paper is a full-length article of original research and a short report is for rapid publication on significant new findings, newly developed methodologies and observations of unique phenomena, etc.
Review articles by invited authors will also be published.
For a regular paper, exceeding four printed pages will be required an additional publication charge (l5,000 yen per page). The length of a short paper is limited to two printed pages, but if it inevitably exceeds two printed pages, one more page will be permitted with an additional publication charge (l5,000 yen). The length of a review article is limited to eight printed pages.

Submission and Review Procedures

Send three copies of the manuscript including photocopies with the submission form attached in every issue of PPS. Fill out the submission form carefully following the directions on the form. Use of registered mail is recommended. The mailing address is:
THE CROP SCIENCE SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Tokyo Secretariat
c/o Kyoritsu Publishing Co. Ltd.,
3F Shin-Kyoritsu Building, Shinkawa 2-22-4, Chuo-ku, Tokyo 104-0033, Japan.
E-mail: cssj-jim@ab.inbox.ne.jp, Fax: +81-3-3553-2047

The submitted manuscript will be sent to reviewers for critical review. The manuscript will be returned to the corresponding author with the evaluation approximately three months after submission. When revision of a manuscript is required by the editor, the author must respond within two months, or the manuscript may be considered withdrawn. The final decision will be made by the Editor-in-Chief. After acceptance, the author will be requested to prepare an electronic copy of the finalized manuscript with tables, figures and/or photographs on an electronic medium, floppy disk, compact disk or magnet optical disk, following the indications by the technical editor and assistants to the editors. The author should send it along with the paper copy with original tables, figures and/or photographs.

Abstract for Insertion in Japanese Journal of Crop Science (JC)

Since PPS and JC are companion journals, abstracts of all papers published in PPS will appear in JC after translation. Once a paper is accepted, the author will be requested to prepare an extra copy of the abstract for insertion in JC. This should be attached to the finalized main manuscript and also in the disk. It must include the title, byline and abstract. The requirement is different depending on the author's native language and type of paper. The Japanese-speaking authors of regular papers must prepare the title-byline-abstract for JC in Japanese. Consult the Instructions for Contributors of JC for the style. Non-Japanese-speaking authors of regular papers must prepare an extra sheet of the English title-byline-abstract to be translated by the Editorial Board. For a short report, the authors will need to write an abstract only for insertion in JC in Japanese (Japanese speaker) or in English (non-Japanese speaker), because it is not included in the main manuscript.

Disk Preparation

Use a 3.5 inch floppy disk (high density ; 1.44 MB), compact disk or magnet optical disk formatted for MS-DOS by IBM or compatible computers. One disk should be used for each paper. Prepare two file versions; the edited file by word processing software MS-Word and one converted to ASCII file. Tables also should be sent as word-processed files. The items to be sent are listed below.

(1) Word-processed file of main manuscript

(2) ASCII version of (1)

(3) Word-processed file of title-byline-abstract

(4) ASCII version of (3)

(5) Word-processed files of tables

(6) Figures and/or photographs

Do not split any of these files into separate ones. The files for the main manuscript must include all the items listed in "Manuscript arrangement" except for tables, figures and photographs. Write clearly the author's name and the software name including its version directly on the disk. Be sure that the files on the disk and the printouts are of the final revision and are identical; retain a backup copy of the disk.

The final printing will be organized using ASCII file only. To avoid any un-adjustable discrepancy between word-processed and ASCII versions, authors should note the following items.

Minimize use of tabs: Use of tabs to create blanks should be avoided. Use repeated spaces instead.

Do not hyphenate artificially: Do not divide a word into two lines artificially by typing a hyphen, though auto-hyphenation provided by the word processor is acceptable.

Be consistent in description of measurement values: Insert a space between a value and its unit (it will be automatically inserted as printed) and between units for multi-unit values, e.g., 5 g m-2 d-1.

Check the ASCII version again: Before sending the disk, please check the ASCII file again to confirm that the edited format is not largely disturbed by a hidden tab and/or improper use of tab and line return.

Proof

One set of proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Only type setting errors can be corrected; no changes or additions to the manuscript will be allowed. Author will be charged for changing page formation, if it is caused.

Publication Charge

All charges must be paid in Japanese yen. Nonresidents in Japan should note that the cost of publication charges with the currency exchange rate at payment.

Fixed charge per single paper

Regular paper and short report : 10,000 yen per paper

Additional charges

Excess page : 15,000 yen per printed page

Remaking of tables and figures : 4,000 yen per item
(varies, depending on complexity)

Reprints : l2 yen x printed page per reprint without covers
An additional charge for covers if ordered

For other special requests for printing, e.g., use of art paper, consult with the Editor-in-Chief.

In addition to the above charges, nonresidents in Japan must pay a handling charge for bank payments. For the details of payment procedure, refer to "Subscription and Submission to Plant Production Science".

To promote submission of papers to PPS from developing countries, a grant-in-aid from CSSJ Fund is available for authors with economical difficulty. Those authors interested in receiving a subsidy should refer to "CSSJ Fund for Subsidization of Publication".

Copyright

Copyright of papers will be transferred to the Crop Science Society of Japan after publication.

Manuscript Preparation for Regular Paper

Consult carefully the latest issue of PPS for general layout. Authors whose native language is not English are advised to have the manuscript checked by a native English speaking colleague prior to submission.
The manuscript should be typewritten double-spaced with 11 or 12 pt. type, allowing more than three cm margins on all sides. Use white sheets of A4 size (210 by 297 mm) or letter size (8.5 by 11 inch). Every page should be numbered sequentially, including references, table/fig. captions, tables and figures. One printed page of PPS consists of two columns of 57 lines and approximately 50 letters on each line. Estimate the length of the paper considering this format.

Manuscript arrangement: The manuscript should be arranged in the following order in principle.

Running title
Title
Names of authors
Institution, address, zip code and nation
Footnotes
Abstract
Key words
Introduction
Materials and method
Results
Discussion
Acknowledgments
References
Table and figure captions
Tables
Figures and/or photographs

Running title: The running title should be shorter than 100 letters including the author' name.

Title and byline: The title of the paper is printed in Gothic, while the subtitle, if any, is not. The initial letter of all words in the main title should be capitalized except for articles, prepositions and conjunctions.
In the case of more than two authors, separate names with commas.
Institution, address, zip code and nation are printed in Italics. All the institutions and addresses of multiple authors should be noted, with indications by superscripts on the respective author' names.

Abstract: Normally in a single paragraph of less than 250 words. Do not cite tables, figures or literatures.

Key words: Less than eight words in alphabetical order. Start every key word with a capital letter, separate them with commas and use a final period.

Headings: The introduction has no heading. All other headings are printed in Gothic letters. Secondary or more headings should be numbered in the following arrangement order; 1, 2, 3; (1), (2), (3); 1), 2), 3); a, b, c.

Footnotes: At the bottom of the first page. The submitted date and the date of final decision will be given by the Editorial Board. Available access to the corresponding author (fax and/or e-mail) should be stated as a footnote. If the address of the corresponding author has changed, the current institution and address also must be noted. If necessary, financial support given for the research may be stated. Listing abbreviations used in the paper in alphabetical order is preferred. Avoid excessive use of footnotes. An example of the style is given below.

Received 10 October 2000. Accepted 20 March 2001. Corresponding author: R. Ishii (abcrop@mail.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp, fax+8l-3-5841-5041, present address; Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, Bunkyo, Tokyo 113-8657, Japan). This research was supported in part by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (No. 06660111) from the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Japan.

Abbreviations: NR, nitrate reductase; TNC, total nonstructural carbohydrate.

Letter indication: Letter indications are needed for the finalized manuscript after acceptance. Use red underlines for Italics (single line), Gothics (wavy line) and small capitals (double line). Super- and subscripts also should be indicated by red marks. Do not put letter indications on the original tables.

Nomenclature: State Latin nomenclature (in Italics), the authority (in Romans) and, if necessary, cultivar name (in Romans) at the first mention of plant and other biological materials in the abstract or main text, e.g., Setaria italica Beauv. var. germanicum Trin.. Consult the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.

Chemicals and abbreviations: Normally, chemical elements should be represented by names rather than symbols. Exceptions are allowed for chemicals with complicated structures. Abbreviations including those commonly used must be identified where first mentioned in the abstract and text, e.g., ATP, adenosine triphosphate; EDTA, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Excessive abbreviations are to be avoided.

Units: All measurements should be in the metric system and SI units are preferred. To avoid possible confusion among volumetric and gravimetric contents of substances, describe them as, g g-1, g L-1 and mL L-1 rather than "%". Do not use a slash mark for combinations of units, such as m/s and g/m2/s. They should be described as m s-1 and g m-2 s-l, and one space should be inserted before unit and between units for multi-unit values. Do not incorporate measurement objects into units, such as gH2Og-1 FW. Year, month, week, day, hour, minute and second should be described as yr, mo, wk, d, hr, min and s. Describe the time as 0800 or 1400 instead of 8:00am and 2:00pm.

Citing tables and figures: Describe "Table #" and "Fig. #" for citation of tables and figures. Photographs also may be cited using "Fig.".

References: The "author and year" style of literature citation should be used in the "text" e.g., Ishii (2000) or (Ishii, 2000), Ishii and Smith (2000) or (Ishii and Smith, 2000) and Ishii et a1. 2000 or (Ishii et al., 2000) for literature by one, two and three or more authors, respectively. Two or more literatures should be arranged chronologically in the "text" e.g., (Yamada, 1996; Ishii, 1998; Smith, 2000) and (Ishii and Smith, 1996; Ishii, 2000). In "References" literature should be arranged alphabetically on authors' names (last names) and chronologically for same-author literature. Do not use dash to omit author name or literature title when they appear in "References" repeatedly. The abbreviations of periodicals from the List of Serial Title Word Abbreviation are primarily used. The common abbreviations may be used if they are widely recognized. The abbreviation of Japanese Journal of Crop Science published in 1977 (vol. 46) and later is "Jpn. J. Crop. Sci.", while "Proc. Crop Sci. Soc. Jpn." is used for the earlier volumes. If a literature written in non-English language is cited, indicate superscript and note the language at the end of  "References" Examples for literature citation are given below.

Tables and figures: Authors are requested to prepare tables and figures ready for photographic printing. If they are not of sufficient quality for printing, the author will be charged for the expenses of remaking. They should be prepared in reducible size to one (84mm) or two columns (l74mm) in India ink, laser print output, or equivalent. Typewritten matter on tables and figures is not acceptable. Include the statistical descriptions in tables and figures as far as possible. Indicate the place where each table and figure is first cited in the text on the right-hand margin. The table/figure number, reduction rate and author's name should be indicated on the margin of each sheet using a lead pencil.

Table: Do not use vertical lines in tables. The desirable font size is between l0 to l2 pt. when a reduction rate of 2/3 is assumed. Do not use Gothic in tables. Details for preparation will be guided to the author at the final manuscript preparation after acceptance.

Figure: The original figure must include axes, labels and inside legends (if any). Lettering for labels and inside legends should be a consistent size and style. The preferred size of the original drawing is approximately 1.5 times the published size. The letter size should be decided carefully considering the rate of reduction to the printed size. Art paper for photographs should be used only if absolutely essential, and the authors will be charged for the expenses.

Table and figure captions: All the captions, titles and footnotes for tables, and titles and explanations for figures, should be typewritten together on a separate page(s). Use a final period at the end of each title.

Manuscript for Short Report

Manuscripts for short reports should be organized basically in the same style as a regular paper. However, the arrangement of the main text; introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion need not necessarily follow that for a regular paper, as long as the essence of the study or observation is properly described within two printed pages. The specific requirements for a short report are as follows:

No abstract is required for the short report itself, although authors will be requested to prepare an abstract for insertion in JC after acceptance.

Key Words should be printed in a single line of two columns; in total 100 letters including spaces.

In "References", omit the title of literature and describe only the name of the first author. Use "et al." for second and other co-authors.

CSSJ Fund for Subsidization of Publication

For the purpose of promoting submission of papers to Plant Production Science (PPS), CSSJ Fund subsidizes the full amount of fixed charge of publication (10,000 yen per single paper) for authors requiring a subsidy from developing countries.

Eligibility:

The applicant must be the first author of a submitted paper and have considerable difficulty in affording the publication charge.

Application and Adoption:

Those who wish to be considered for the subsidy should make their application to the Editor-in-Chief of PPS at the initial submission. A written statement should be sent describing (1) the reason for necessity of the subsidy and (2) whether or not they must decline the publication, when this application is not accepted.

Due to budget limitation, the application may not necessarily be approved. The decision will be made by the Editorial Board of PPS.
