About the journal

The Plant Molecular Biology Reporter is a quarterly publication of the

International Society for Plant Molecular Biology. The journal provides

ISPMB members a forum to publish items of general and scientific interest,

such as letters, reviews, protocols, reports, and announcements of

meetings. The electronic version of the Plant Molecular Biology Reporter

from issue 14(4) to the current is found at http:\\www.uga.edu\ispmb

or http:\\www.nrc.ca\cisti\journals\ispmb\reporter.html. Starting with

Volume 20, No. 1, March 2002, a password is required for access to the

electronic version of the Plant Molecular Biology Reporter.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted by e-mail to reporter@u.arizona.edu.

Submit complete, word processor–formatted documents prepared with the

latest versions of either Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect. Transmit

manuscripts to the editor by e-mail as file attachments in base 64 encoding.

All electronic files submitted must include the author’s name and date

in the filenames. Do not send e-mail attachments in Mac binhex encoding.

Files may be up to 25 Mb in aggregate size, including the transmitting

e-mail message. As a general guide, it is unlikely that the aggregate size of

all files (text and illustrations) for a manuscript need be larger than 10 Mb.

Authors are advised to carefully evaluate whether an illustration file in any

chosen format needs to be larger than 2-3 Mb to have sufficient resolution

(300 dpi) for printing. If necessary, send larger files on Zip disks or consult

with the editor to plan an efficient file transmission procedure.

Only electronic files named as follows will be considered:

<author(s) identification> <table or figure number> <3-letter PC file type>

Address manuscripts sent by regular mail or express service to the following

address:

Don P. Bourque, Editor, Plant Molecular Biology Reporter, Department of

Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, 537 Biosciences West Bldg., 1041 E.

Lowell Street, Tucson AZ 85721-0088, USA; fax: 001 520 621 1697;

ph: 001 520 621 7529.

Plant Molecular Biology Reporter 21: 109–117, 2003

MANUSCRIPT PRESENTATION

The journal’s language is English. British English or American English

spelling and terminology may be used, but either one should be followed

consistently throughout the article. Electronic manuscript files should be

formatted to allow printing on US Letter bond paper (8.5 × 11 inches), one

side only, leaving one-inch margins on all sides. Please double-space all material,

including notes and references. The last page of the manuscript

should be the Figure Legends. Figures, if included in the manuscript file

should be placed at the end of the file and without any associated legend

text. Authors are advised to view a recent issue of the Plant Molecular Biology

Reporter to visualize the appropriate printed format.

Number manuscript pages consecutively, starting with the first page which

should contain the following:

• Running head (shortened title)

Article type

Title

Author(s)

Affiliation(s)

Full address for correspondence, including name of corresponding

author, e-mail, fax, phone

Abstract

Please provide a short abstract of 100-250 words. The abstract should not

contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.

Key Words

Please provide 5-10 key words or short phrases in alphabetical order.

Abbreviations

A list of nomenclature conventions for standard abbreviations is found at the

end of these instructions. Nonstandard abbreviations and their explanations

should be collected in a list.

Article Types

The characteristics and requirements of various types of articles and features

published in the Plant Molecular Biology Reporter are listed alphabetically.

Appointments and Awards. Notices of appointments to professorial rank or

to comparable positions in industry or research institutions. Notices of appointment

to directorships of institutes should include a brief biographical

sketch, a description of the institute, and a photograph of the individual.

Commentary. Observations or comments on important developments in the

field of plant molecular biology. Significant extensions or modifications of

existing procedures will be placed in this section, rather than as detailed

protocols.

Genetic Resources. Discussion of new concepts, resources, or new material

for the analysis of genetic systems. Descriptions of mutant and cultured cell

lines should include addresses where the described items may be obtained.

Grants and Fellowships. Awards of an international character with information

on the scope of the program, deadlines for applications, and the address

of the office for application forms.

Protocols. New procedures or the application of existing procedures for the

first time to plants. The extension of procedures to new classes of plants or

important modifications of existing procedures will be considered for publication

under Commentary. Protocols should provide sufficient detail to permit

duplication of the procedure without reference to other publications.

Authors are responsible for correctness of all protocol details, with special

attention paid to specifications of solutions, volumes, amounts of chemicals

used, etc. There should be a list of solutions and special items of equipment

required, followed by a description of the procedure as a list of steps or in a

flow diagram. This description should be in a form suitable for clipping into

a notebook. Comments should be footnoted and listed in a set of numbered

notes rather than included in the statement of the procedure itself. The discussion

should identify the novel features of the procedure and compare it to

alternate methods, rather than report new research results.

Publish by Abstract. Category for manuscripts that document minor variations

of published procedures. Editorial decisions and suggestions to Publish

by Abstract will be made when considered appropriate. Authors are

also encouraged to submit manuscripts targeted for this primarily electronic

publication category. A title page with abstract will be published in

the printed version of the Plant Molecular Biology Reporter. All protocol

details and limited experimental data will be available at the Plant Molecular

Biology Reporter World Wide Web site.

Consul Reports. Reports by scientists who represent the ISPMB as consuls

throughout the world. Reports describe the status of plant molecular biology

research in the consul’s geographic region or home country.

Reports of Meetings. Please consult the editor or a member of the editorial

board in advance of submission.

Reviews. New concepts or methods that may be applied to plant systems or

new developments in research. Reviews may identify areas of plant sciences

that appear to be appropriate for molecular analyses. Please consult

the editor or a member of the editorial board in advance of submission.

Schedule of Events. Meeting and course announcements. Include dates and

location as well as mailing, e-mail, and Web addresses where information

may be obtained.

Site Specifics. Descriptions of current activities in specific institutions or

geographical regions.

Updates. Important developments in special fields of plant molecular biology.

Update contributions in all areas of plant molecular biology are welcome.

Well-Repeated Sequences. Accounts of discoveries of importance to the development

of plant molecular biology. Brief anecdotes describing the circumstances

and personalities involved in the discoveries are also welcome.

Figures and Tables

Submission of Electronic Figures. Supply high-resolution (>300 dpi) electronic

versions of figures in one of the following formats: EPS, TIF, JPG, or

PSD. Contact the editor regarding other acceptable formats. Crop all illustration

files to contain no excess white area outside figure contents. Authors

also need to size electronic figure files to be no larger than 118 mm wide

and 170 mm high for a full page illustration. Figures must be saved in separate

files without their legends and with file names that include the author’s

name and figure number. Figure legends should be included in a list at the

end of the article’s text. See first page of Instruction to authors for file naming

format.

Submission of Hard-Copy Figures. Only if no electronic versions of figures

can be provided, authors may submit high-quality camera-ready artwork that

can be reproduced without any part having to be redrawn or re-typeset. The

letter size of any text in the figures must be large enough to allow for reduction.

Photographs should be in black-and-white on glossy paper. If a figure

contains color, make absolutely clear whether it should be printed in black

and white or in color. Figures that are to be printed in black and white

should not be submitted in color. The charge to authors for printed color

illustrations is US $300.

Each figure and table should be numbered and mentioned in the text. The

approximate position of figures and tables should be indicated in the margin

of the manuscript. On the reverse side of each figure, the name of the (first)

author and the figure number should be written in pencil; the top of the figure

should be clearly indicated. Figures and tables should be placed at the

end of the manuscript following the Reference section. Each figure and table

should be accompanied by an explanatory legend. The figure legends

should be grouped and placed on a separate page. Figures are not returned

to the author unless specifically requested.

Submission of Tables. Tables should be prepared using the table formatting

function in Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect. Tables formatted using

tabs and spaces are not acceptable. Tables can be included at the end of the

text of the article or saved in a separate file. In tables, footnotes are preferable

to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table.

Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be

placed immediately below the table.

Cover Figures. Authors are encouraged to submit figures that may be suitable

for use on the cover of the Reporter. Such figures must be related to

the manuscript they accompany but must be an extra, different color figure

than those to be published in the article itself. Candidate cover figures are

preferred as TIF files (or as clean hard copies on photographic paper) at a

resolution of 300-600 dpi; all graphic elements should be embedded and

self-contained within the file, rather than linked to an external file. The

electronic image should be saved with the CMYK color option, and be of a

size that requires no reduction or enlargement before reproduction (width

158 mm; depth 133 mm; inclusive of background). Colors should be bright

and clearly distinct from one another. The author will receive a complementary

copy of the issue on which the cover appears.

Section Headings

First-, second-, third-, and fourth-order headings should be clearly distinguishable

but not numbered.

Appendices

Supplementary material should be collected in an Appendix and placed before

the Notes and Reference sections.

Notes

Please use endnotes rather than footnotes. Notes should be indicated by

consecutive superscript numbers in the text and listed at the end of the article

before References. A source reference note should be indicated by

means of an asterisk after the title. This note should be placed at the bottom

of the first page.

Quotations

Quotations of more than 40 words should be set off clearly, either by indenting

the left-hand margin or by using a smaller typeface. Use double

quotation marks for direct quotations and single quotation marks for quotations

within quotations and for words or phrases used in a special sense.

Cross-Referencing

Please make optimal use of the cross-referencing features of your software

package. Do not cross-reference page numbers. Cross-references should

refer to, for example, section numbers, equation numbers, and figure and

table numbers.

In the text, a reference identified by means of an author’s name should be

followed by the date of the reference in parentheses and page number(s)

where appropriate. When there are more than two authors, only the first author’s

name should be mentioned, followed by ‘et al.’. In the event that an

author cited has had two or more works published during the same year, the

reference, both in the text and in the reference list, should be identified by a

lowercase letter like ‘a’ and ‘b’ after the date to distinguish the works.

Examples:

Winograd (1986, p. 204)

(Winograd, 1986a, b)

(Winograd, 1986; Flores et al., 1988)

(Bullen and Bennett, 1990)

Acknowledgments

Acknowledgments of people, grants, funds, etc., should be placed in a separate

section before References.

References

References to books, journal articles, articles in collections and conference

or workshop proceedings, and technical reports should be listed at the end

of the article in alphabetical order. Articles in preparation or articles submitted

for publication, unpublished observations, personal communications,

etc., should not be included in the reference list but should only be mentioned

in the article text (e.g., T. Moore, personal communication). Authors

should check all references carefully to ensure that each entry in the Reference

section is cited in the text. Personal communications, unpublished results,
