About the journal

Phyton is an international journal of plant science and publishes original research papers, review papers, and occasional book reviews.Phyton will publish original research articles in all fields of plant science, including, but not restricted to systematic botany, vegetation ecology, plant biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and ecophysiology, and plant ecology. Work on interactions between plants and abiotic or/and biotic environment is encouraged. Submitted work must be original, not be published or submitted elsewhere (except in a preliminary short form on conferences), and must address questions of general interest. Results of strictly applied research, of local importance and descriptive work will not be considered. Submitted manuscripts will be subjected to peer review process.Publication of review articles is possible but authors are advised to contact the editors if they plan to offer a review article.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted to one of the editors.

Three hardcopies of the manuscript should be submitted together with an

electronic version of the text in MS Office format (*.doc).

In preparing the manuscripts, the authors are kindly requested to adhere to the

following instructions. Please consult also the sample article or a recent issue of

Phyton.

Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced, single-sided, leaving a wide (3-

4 cm) margin on the left. The beginning of a paragraph should be indicated by

indenting the first line.

The title of the paper must be concise but informative. The subject matter of the

contribution must be described as well as possible.

Authors' names must be spelled in full with a middle initial if appropriate.

Authors' address(es) should be stated as a foot-note on the first page of the

paper. Please indicate an e-mail address.

List 4 to 6 keywords including words used in the title.

If the paper is in English, text must be preceded by an English summary, which is

followed by a German one containing also a translation of the English title. Editors

will procure the translations if the authors are not able to provide it. The summary

should contain the important new results, but no references.

The text should be organized in introduction, material and methods, results,

discussion, acknowledgements, and references.

The introduction should explain the purpose of the work and its relations to

other studies in this field. Descriptions of materials and methods should provide

sufficient information to permit repetition of the experimental work. The origin of

the material investigated, methods of preparation and the herbaria in which the

vouchers are deposited, should be indicated. SI-units are requested. Uncommon

abbreviations should be explained in the methods section. The discussion should

interpret the main results, not recapitulate them.

The scientific names of the taxa (species and lower ones) must be quoted

completely, giving the name of the genus, species epitheton (if necessary

subspecies, cultivar etc.) and the author, when mentioned the first time.

References to the cited papers are given in the text by the name of the author

and the year of publication, e.g. METZNER 1971 or TAUSZ & GRILL 2000. The

abbreviation citation "& al." should be used when there are more than two

authors.

References to the cited works (and only those) are to be arranged alphabetically

at the end of the paper, the papers of the same author(s) should be listed in

chronological order. References are to be formatted as follows:

Journal articles:

HATCH M. D. & SLACK C. N. 1970. Photosynthetic CO2-fixation pathways. -

Ann. Rev. Plant Physiol. 21: 141-263.

Journal abbreviations as listed in the Journal Citations Reports.

Chapters in edited books:

ASADA K. 1994. Mechanisms for scavenging reactive molecules generated in

chloroplasts under light stress. - In: BAKER N. R. & BOWYER J. R. (Eds.),

Photoinhibition of photosynthesis from molecular mechanisms to the field, pp.

129-142. - Bios. scientific publishers. Lancaster.

References to unpublished work, manuscripts in preparation, or in the review

process elsewhere, and personal communications should not be included in the

reference list. They may be mentioned in the text as "unpublished", "personal

communication" etc.

Foot notes and references to other parts of the paper by page numbers should be

avoided.

The required type-setting instructions should be indicated by underlining the

respective words: author's names (to be set in small Capitals) = straight line,

scientific names of any plant taxa (but not names of plant communities), to be set

in italics = wavy line. The literature references must be marked in the same

manner.

In the case of taxonomic keys, the lines must be utilizied fully (e.g. Rothmalers

Exkursionsflora and Rechingers Flora Iranica). Indentions of lines (e.g. Flora

Europaea) are not admissible.

The number of both tables and illustrations must be kept to the necessary

minimum. Repeated presentation of the same data by tables and figures will not

be accepted. In case of doubt, figures (line drawings) are preferred.

Line drawings may be submitted in any medium providing that the image is black

and very sharp. They should preferably all require the same degree of reduction;

large diagrams, more than four times final size, are discouraged due to handling

difficulties. The printed area of the journal is 11,3 x 18 cm and lettering must be

large enough to be legible after reduction of the illustration to fit (minimum size of

2 mm after reduction).

Photographs should be submitted as contrasting black-and-white prints on

glossy paper. Each illustration must be clearly numbered and the name(s) of the

author(s) of the paper written on the reverse side.

Scale of a figure (e.g. micrographs) should be indicated by a scale bar in the

figures, not by listing factors (e.g. 1000 x) in the legend. Colour prints are

reproduced at the author's expense only. Brief legends to the figures (line

drawings as well as photographs) must be enclosed with the manuscript on a

separate sheet.

The authors are requested to correct the galley proofs carefully and to return

them within two weeks to the editor. Only printing errors should be corrected at

that stage. The cost of alterations in the text exceeding 10 percent of the setting

will be charged to the author. It is assumed that the consent to publish & transfer

of copyright is given with the return of the proofs.

The authors will receive 60 reprints of their papers free of charge. Additional

copies may be ordered with the Order Form enclosed with the galley proofs. The

price will be quoted on the Order Form, which has to be returned with the

proofs.

If you are interested in publishing proceedings of meetings or results of

collaborative research projects, the edition of a special issue is possible.
