Phytochemical Analysis
Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. |
Phytochemical Analysis is devoted to the publication of original articles on the utilization of analytical methodology in the plant sciences. The spectrum of coverage is broad, encompassing methods and techniques relevant to the extraction, separation, purification, identification and qualification of substances in plant biochemistry, plant cellular and molecular biology, plant biotechnology, the food sciences, agriculture and horticulture. The Journal welcomes papers on the analysis of whole plants (including bacteria and algae), plant cells, tissues and organs, plant-derived extracts and plant products (including those which have been partially or completely refined for use in the food, agrochemical, pharmaceutical and related industries). All forms of physical, chemical, biochemical, spectroscopic, radiometric, electrometric and chromatographic investigations of plant products (monomeric species as well as polymeric molecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates) will be included.
Phytochemical Analysis is intended to serve as a major resource for information on analytical and instrumental methodology in the plant sciences. Review articles will be published and they will set out to explain the fundamental basis of a specified methodology together with its applications, placing special emphasis on the particular importance and likely potential in the field of plant analysis. It is intended to provide also for a number of rapid (i.e. accelerated) communications where special conditions of timeliness or significance can be demonstrated.

Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to Dr B.V. Charlwood, Phytochemical Analysis, c/o Sally Betteridge, John Wiley & Sons Ltd, The Atrium, Southern Gate, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 8SQ, UK.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below). The electronic version may be submitted via email to barry.charlwood@editione.com
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 200 words for all articles. This is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
- Use Chemical Abstracts nomenclature for chemical names and structures. Use proper or proprietary names with caution. Common acronyms for biomedical names are acceptable but define all others when first mentioned. Define abbreviations when first mentioned and do not use in the title or abstract. Define non-standard units.
Rapid Communications. A distinct section of the journal is devoted to Rapid Communications. The presentation should conform to the guidelines for full length papers. Authors should include with the manuscript, a letter to the Editor giving reasons for requesting accelerated publication. Authors will not see proofs.
Reviews. These will usually be written at the invitation of the Editor. Unsolicited reviews will be welcome but authors wishing to submit these are requested to consult the Editor beforehand, ideally prior to commencement of writing. Reviews should include a Table of Contents.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year, and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. All references must be complete and accurate. Use Index Medicus abbreviations for journal names. For correct abbreviations visit http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/jrbrowser.cgi. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
| Wagner H, Bladt S. 1994. Pharmaceutical quality of Hypericum extracts. J Geriatr Psychiatry Neurol 7: 65-68. |
| Pratt WB, Taylor P. 1990. Principles of Drug Action. The Basis of Pharmacology (3rd edn). Churchill Livingstone: New York. |
| Bede JC, Tobe SS. 1999. Insect juvenile hormones in plants. In Studies in Natural Products Chemistry, vol 24, Rahman A-U (ed). Elsevier: Amsterdam; 369-418. |
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet. Write the lead author's name and the figure number on the reverse, and make sure that the top of the figure is clearly indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Please supply artwork at the intended size for printing, sized to the text width of 84mm/single column, 176mm/double column.
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Phytotherapy Research. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors (unless colour has been used - see above).
