Instructions to Authors
The editors, Kevin Foreman, Zo Hudson and Gregory Kolt, welcome the submission of articles for publication in the journal. Electronic submission by e-mail to ptis@pettylane.freeserve.co.uk is preferred (Word documents only - please do not send Mackintosh files). Postal submission is also accepted in which case, as articles are double-blind reviewed, we require three copies of your manuscript and illustrations plus a disk. Authors should retain a file copy. Please send manuscripts and all correspondence relating to the editorial management of Physical Therapy in Sport to the journal's editorial office. Authors in the southern hemisphere may send their papers in the first instance to Dr Gregory Kolt - please see below for both addresses.
If submitting hard copy, your article should be typed on one side of the paper, double-spaced with a margin of at least 3 cm. Rejected articles will not be returned to the author except on request, in which case a self-addressed stamped envelope should be provided.
Number all pages consecutively beginning with the title page. Papers should be set out as follows, with each section beginning on a separate sheet: title page, abstract, text, acknowledgements, references, tables, captions to illustrations.
Headings should be appropriate to the nature of the paper. The use of headings enhances readability. Three categories of headings should be used:
Major headings should be typed in capital letters in the centre of the page and underlined Secondary headings should be typed in lower case (with an initial capital letter) at the left-hand margin and underlined Minor headings should be typed in lower case and italicized
Check list: Please check your text carefully before you post or e-mail it to the editors, both for typographical errors and for correct content, as it is not possible to change the content of accepted manuscripts during the production process. Ensure that you provide the following:
A complete reference list in the correct style Written permission from the copyright holder to use previously published material A signed copyright assignment form For postal submission only, three copies of the typescript and illustrations and a labelled disk. The version on the disk must be identical to the manuscript.
Manuscripts may be submitted to: Carol Foreman Editorial office, Physical Therapy in Sport 15 Petty Lane Derry Hill Calne, SN11 9QY, UK Tel: +44 (0) 1249 817 821 Fax: +44 (0) 1249 817 821 E-mail: ptis@pettylane.freeserve.co.uk
Gregory Kolt Associate Dean (Research) Faculty of Health Studies Auckland University of Technology Auckland, New Zealand E-mail: gregory.kolt@aut.ac.nz
Ethics Do not use 'he', 'his' etc. where the sex of the person is unknown; say 'the patient', etc. Avoid inelegant alternatives such as 'he/she'. Avoid sexist language.
Title The title page should give the following information: Title of the article, which should be a concise and informative description of the study Full name of each author (in keeping with the anonymity of the review process, these names should not appear on any of the manuscript pages except the title page) A maximum of four degrees/qualifications for each author and their current relevant appointment Name and address of the department or institution to which the work should be attributed Name, address, telephone/fax numbers and e-mail address of the author responsible for correspondence and to whom requests for offprints should be sent
Abstracts An abstract of your manuscript, summarizing the content in no more than 200 words, should be provided on a separate page following the title page. Abstracts should follow a structured format. For empirical studies, this will usually involve these headings: Objectives, Design, Setting, Participants, Main Outcome Measures, Results, Conclusions. For other types of study, contributors may adapt this format, but should retain the idea of structure and headings.
Length We can accept original and review articles of 2000-5000 words. Shorter items are also welcome - please check the ideal length with the editors.
Reference Format Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy and completeness of references. In the text, your reference should state the author's surname and the year of publication (Smith 1999). If there are two authors you should give both surnames (Smith & Black 1999). When a source has more than two authors, give the name of the first author followed by `et al.'.
A list of all references in your manuscript should be typed in alphabetical order, double-spaced on separate sheets.
Each reference to a journal article needs to include the author's surname and initials, year of publication, full title of the paper, full name of the journal, volume number and first and last page numbers.
The correct form, punctuation and capitalization are shown in the following examples: Lee M, Svensson N L 1993 Effect of loading frequency on response of the spine to lumbar postero-anterior forces. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics 16 (7): 439?466.
References to books should appear in a slightly different form: Bogduk N, Twomey L 1991 Clinical anatomy of the lumbar spine, 2nd edn. Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh ch 4 p 37 Jones M A 1994 Clinical reasoning process in manipulative therapy. In: Boyling J, Palastanga N (eds) Grieve's modern manual therapy, 2nd edn. Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh ch 34 pp 471?490.
When citing a Churchill Livingstone journal, include the digital object identifier (doi), if noted, from the article's title page. Please note the following example:
JoosU, Kleinheinz J: Reconstruction of the severely resorbed (class VI) jaws: routing or exception? J Craniomaxillofac Surg 28: 1-4, 2000, doi:10.1054/jcms.2000.0102
Figures The journal is fully illustrated throughout. Please give careful consideration at an early stage in writing your paper to the use of illustrations that will enhance and develop the text. It is the author's responsibility to provide all the illustrations for a paper.
Photographs must be high-quality black and white glossy prints. Mark lightly on the back, in soft pencil, a shortened manuscript title, figure number and correct orientation (`top'). Do not write the authors' names anywhere on the figures. Do not use ink.
Line drawings and figures should be clearly labelled, using lettering appropriate to the size of the figure and bearing in mind that they may be reduced in size. If you do not have access to a professional artist, the publishers may be able to arrange to have your sketches re-drawn to publication standard. If you require drawings to be re-worked, please provide clear and complete instructions. Do not write on the illustrations. Captions should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets. Computer-generated art printed on porous paper reproduces poorly: use non-porous paper and a high-quality printer.
Illustrations and tables that have appeared elsewhere must be accompanied by written permission to reproduce them from the original publishers. This is necessary even if you are an author of the borrowed material. Borrowed material should be acknowledged in the captions in the exact wording required by the copyright holder. If not specified, use this style: `Reproduced by kind permission of . . . (publishers) from . . . (reference).' Identifiable clinical photographs must be accompanied by written permission from the patient.
Tables Tables should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets and contain only horizontal lines. Do not submit tables as photographs. A short descriptive title should appear above each table and any footnotes should be suitably identified below. Ensure that each table is cited in the text. Take care to include all units of measurement. Tables should be comprehensible without reference to the text.
Copyright Information A paper is accepted for publication on the understanding that it has not been submitted simultaneously to another journal in the English language. You should send to the editorial office a signed copy of the copyright assignment form, which can be photocopied from the journal or downloaded from the website at http:/elsevierhealth.com/journals/ptsp/ .
Permissions Information Illustrations and tables that have appeared elsewhere must be accompanied by written permission to reproduce them from the original publishers.
Proofs Page proofs are sent to the corresponding author for checking. The proofs, with minor corrections, must be returned to the production editor at Harcourt Publishers Ltd within 48 hours of receipt.
Offprints Twenty-five free offprints are supplied to the correspondence author, to whom offprint requests are made. An offprint order form will be sent to the author with the page proofs for the purchase of extra copies.
