About the journal

  Perception & Psychophysics

Perception & Psychophysics covers all areas of research in perception, from the earliest sensory system processes that can be studied by psychophysical methods, to areas such as speech perception and object recognition. Most articles are reports of experimental work. Theoretical, integrative, and evaluative reviews are also published, while commentary on issues of importance to researchers appears in a special section of the journal.

Instructions to Authors

Perception & Psychophysics publishes articles that deal with sensory processes, perception, and psychophysics. While the majority of published articles are reports of experimental investigations in these content areas, articles that are primarily theoretical or that present integrative and evaluative reviews are accepted. Studies employing either human or animal subjects are welcome. There are no explicit length restrictions on acceptable articles other than the requirement of clear and concise writing and relevance of the various contents.

This journal is published by the Psychonomic Society under the direction of its Publications Committee (Chair, 2003: Russell M. Church).

For submission questions: contact the editor.

Submissions: Authors need submit only an electronic copy, as an attachment and preferably in Microsoft Word, to pandp@msu.edu; those who must send a printed copy should address it to Editor-Elect Thomas H. Carr, Department of Psychology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1117. Manuscripts should be packaged with care to avoid damage or loss in the mail.

On the title page, include your address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Include an abstract of 100 to 150 words in the form used by the American Psychological Association. Manuscripts should adhere to the conventions concerning references, manuscript format, etc., described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.), except that in the abbreviation of physical units the style of the American Institute of Physics should be followed.

If convenient, please enclose an electronic copy of your manuscript on a disk (PC or Mac) with your original submission. With the final accepted version of the manuscript, please submit an updated copy on disk in ASCII (text only) format. The text in the final hard copy and the disk should match exactly. For details, see the Guidlines for Authors in Volume 65(1) or on the web, or call the Publications Office at (512) 462-2442.

The Publications Committee of the Psychonomic Society and the Editor expect that human and animal subjects will be treated ethically. Mistreatment of subjects is grounds for rejection of a manuscript.

Tables should generally adhere to the conventions described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.).

Figures and halftones created on computers should, following acceptance, be submitted on 3.5-in. or Zip disks or on CDs, in TIFF, EPS, PDF, JPEG, or PICT format. Otherwise, graphics and lettering should be clear and sharp enough to accommodate probable reduction for publication, with special attention given to both detail and figure-ground contrast. See the Guidelines for Authors in Vol. 65(1) or on the web, for more information on tables and figures.

Copyright and Permission: Authors must secure from both the Psychonomic Society and the author of reproduced material written permission to quote text of more than 500 words or to reproduce two or more tables or figures from any article published in this journal, except for the few that are in the public domain. The Psychonomic Society normally grants permission contingent upon the author's permission, a complete citation of source, and payment of a $10 fee per article from which material is taken. The fee only is waived for authors who wish to use their own material commercially.

Permission from the Society is waived for authors who wish to reproduce a single table or figure, provided the author's permission is obtained and full credit is given to the Psychonomic Society and the author through a complete citation. (If written permission is requested for commercial use of a single table or figure, the $10 fee will be assessed.) Permission and fees are waived for authors who wish to reproduce their own material for personal use, and for others to make single or multiple copies of single articles for personal, noncommercial scholarly or for nonprofit, educational classroom use. Extensive use of copy privileges in such a way as to substitute for a subscription to this journal is not intended or permitted.

Libraries and other users are permitted to photocopy beyond the limits of U.S. copyright law provided that the applicable fee is paid through the Copyright Clearance Center, 222 Rosewood Drive, Danvers, MA 01923. Phone: (978) 750-8400. Fax: (978) 750-4470. Web: www.copyright.com.

Permission through the Academic Permissions Service of the CCC, or written permission from the Psychonomic Society, is required for all other kinds of copying such as copying for resale, for general distribution, for advertising or promotional purposes, or for creating new collective works.

For additional information on submissions, formats, permissions, proof, reprints, tables, figures, and computer disks, see Guidelines for Authors.
