About the journal
Paediatric Anaesthesia
Devoted to the publication of information of interest and importance to practising anaesthetists everywhere, Paediatric Anaesthesia aims to be truly international in policy and flavour. The scientific and clinical content of the journal covers a wide selection of medical disciplines in all areas relevant to anaesthesia and intensive care in new-borns, infants and children.
Paediatric Anaesthesia has an intercontinental Editorial Board, which is supported by the Editorial Advisory Panel of recognized experts from around the world, to ensure that the journal is publishing the best work from the front line of research in the field. In addition to top-quality scientific and clinical research papers and commissioned commentary articles, there are sections covering case presentations; book reviews; correspondence; reports of local, national and international meetings; and a diary of forthcoming events.

Instructions to Authors
Papers are invited for possible publication in Paediatric Anaesthesia on the understanding that the material has not been published elsewhere or accepted for publication in another journal and does not infringe prior copyright. Articles accepted for publication become the copyright of the publishers and a Copyright Assignment Form should be signed and returned to the publishers. Permission to reproduce material must be obtained from the Editor. The Editor and Editorial Board do not accept responsibility for the opinions expressed in the journal.
Papers based on clinical investigation must satisfy the Editorial Board that they conform to ethical standards as described in the Declaration of Helsinki. Acceptance of an investigational study by the appropriate ethical committee should be confirmed. Any form of registration which may identify a patient must be excluded from the content of the paper. However, when clinical photographs of patients are submitted, consent by the patient or parent must be obtained prior to submission of the article and is the responsibility of the author.
Submission
Four copies of each typescript should be submitted to:
Laura Steward Paediatric Anaesthesia Blackwell Publishing Oxford OX4 2DQ UK
Tel: +44 (0) 1865 476326 Fax: +44 (0) 1865 471326
e-mail: laura.steward@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com
The typescript must be presented in English, with a covering letter signed personally by all the authors, confirming the above understanding concerning copyright. When papers have been accepted for publication, and after any revision has been completed, authors should submit the final version on disk (unless there is a very good reason why this cannot be done). This should be IBM compatible. An accurate hard copy must accompany each disk together with details of the type of computer used, the word-processing software and the disk operating system. The text must not be justified. Particular attention should be taken that the final version adheres to the style of the journal in all respects and that the hard copy and the file on disk are the same. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. Turn the hyphenation off. Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables.
Electronic artwork
Please send digital versions of figures. Ideally, these should be sent in native format or PICT if created on a Mac, or in native format or WMR if created in Windows. Files saved as PS, EPS, GIF and TIF may also be used, but please note that it may not be possible to modify them. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. Further details can be obtained from the publishers. Disks will not be returned to authors.
Preparation of Typescripts
The typescript should consist of the following sections:
Title page, summary, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, figures and/or tables, captions for figures and/or tables.
All papers should be typed double spaced on one side only of A4 paper with a wide margin. Dot matrix printers should not be used. The pages should be numbered consecutively beginning with the title page.
Title Page This page should include a concise title of the article and if necessary an abbreviated version of not more than 50 characters for use as a page headline, together with the name(s), degrees and addresses including e-mail of the author(s). The person to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent should be given on this page.
Summary This should be a brief account of the subject of no more than 250 words, and for Original Papers be structured with the headings, Backgrounds, Methods, Results and Conclusions. Up to six key words or phrases (for indexing) should be provided below the summary, according to Keywords in Anesthesiology, 3rd Edition, Greene, N.M., Elsevier 1988.
Text This should start on a separate page and include introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusions. The suggested location of tables and figures should be indicated in the margin.
Headings in the text can be of three types and should be indicated by a circled letter 'A', 'B' or 'C' in the margin.
Symbols, Abbreviations and Statistics Symbols and abbreviations should follow the conventions described in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations: A Guide to Biological and Medical Editors and Authors (1988) Ed. D. N. Baron, published and available from the Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London W1M 8AE, or where more appropriate may be reported in traditional units, e.g. pressures should be identified as mmHg or cm H2O.
Acknowledgements These should be brief and must include reference to sources of financial and logistical support.
References in Text References to articles, chapters, monographs or other publications in the text should be in the Vancouver style, i.e. they should be numbered consecutively (by arabic numerals in parentheses) in the order in which they are first mentioned. References cited only in legends should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration. Lists of references should start on a new page. The references themselves should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. More than three authors to a paper should be abbreviated to et al.
Unpublished observations and personal communications should not be listed but may be inserted in the text. Papers which have been accepted for publication should be included in the list of references as 'in press'. Authors are responsible for verifying the wording of all references and that references of unpublished work are approved by the original author.
Examples of references:
1 Rees GJ. Anaesthesia in the newborn. Br Med J 1950; 2: 1419-1422.
2 Hatch DJ, Sumner E, Hellman J. The Surgical Neonate: Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, 3rd edn. London: Edward Arnold, 1994: 120-125.
3 Motoyama EK. Respiratory physiology in infants and children. In: Motoyama EK, Davis PJ, eds. Smith's Anesthesia for Infants and Children, 5th edn. St. Louis: C.V. Mosby, 1990:11-76.
Tables and Figures Each table with its title should be typed on a separate sheet and be placed at the end of the paper following the references.
Each illustration should be separate, and about 50% larger than the desired reproduction size. Line illustrations should be drawn with a line of adequate weight to allow for reduction to 2/3. Lettering will be added by the publisher and a separate photocopy of the drawing should indicate where this is to be inserted.
Photographs should be glossy monochrome prints of adequate contrast and their orientation should be clearly indicated in soft pencil on the back. Care should be taken to avoid marking photographs with paper clips or staples. Where reproduction of already published material is required, permission must be obtained in writing from both the author and publisher of the original.
Both drawings and photographs should be clearly marked in soft pencil on the back with the author(s) name(s) and their figure numbers. Legends to figures (both line and half-tone) should be typed on a separate sheet and included in the typescript following the tables.
