About the journal
For over 25 years, ORTHOPEDICS has been the preferred choice of orthopedic surgeons for clinically relevant information. A monthly, peer-reviewed journal, ORTHOPEDICS offers clinically valuable, original articles covering all aspects of adult and pediatric orthopedic surgery and treatment.
Monthly columns include Blue Notes, Tips & Techniques, Guest Editorial, and Radiologic Case Study. In addition, each issue offers a Review article for CME credit, feature articles, brief reports, basic science articles, and case reports. Other features include Trauma Update, Point/Counterpoint, Health Care Delivery, Mayo Clinic Tumor Rounds, and Preliminary Reports.
Edited by Robert D'Ambrosia, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado, Denver, and former President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and an Editorial Board of over 100 international orthopedists, ORTHOPEDICS is the source to turn to for guidance in your practice.
Instructions to Authors
The purpose of ORTHOPEDICS is to provide the practicing orthopedic surgeon with practical, clinical articles in the environment of a peer-reviewed, scientific journal.
Manuscripts should consist of new material, and are accepted for publication with the understanding that they are contributed solely to ORTHOPEDICS and have not been published previously, except in abstract form. If and when the manuscript is published, it will become the sole property of the journal and copyrighted by SLACK Incorporated. Authors should submit a Manuscript Transmittal Statement (see below) with the original manuscript, signed and dated by all authors. Credit for authorship requires substantial contributions to a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; and b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content. Authors must address any situations regarding possible conflict of interest in their cover letter.

Protection of Subjects: When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) or with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients?names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate whether the institution’s or the National Research Council’s guide for, or any national law on, the care and use of laboratory animals was followed.
Manuscript Submission: Requirements are in accordance with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (JAMA, January 23, 1997; 277: 927-934). All submissions should consist of an original and three copies (including four sets of figures and tables) and be typewritten on one side of 8】11 inch paper, double-spaced, with wide margins. The author should keep a complete copy of the manuscript and figures. Manuscripts should include a self-addressed postage-paid postcard with the title of the manuscript, to be returned to the author as acknowledgment of receipt.
Submission Type: Submissions are accepted in the following categories:
Feature Articles. Original research or retrospective studies. Manuscripts should be organized as follows: title page; abstract; introduction; materials and methods; results; discussion; conclusion; references; tables; figures; figure legends; acknowledgments.
The Cutting Edge. Submission should be timely and describe or highlight topics currently of interest to the practicing orthopedic surgeon. Text should be no longer than 10-12 typewritten, double-spaced pages and should follow format for feature articles. References should be kept to a minimum (no more than 30) and cited consecutively in the text. Illustrations should be kept to a maximum of 10.
Brief Reports. Manuscripts should follow format for feature articles; however, references should be limited to 10, figures or tables to 2 total (ie, 2 images, 2 tables, or 1 of each), and text to 1000 words.
Case Reports. Figures should be limited to a total of 4 images and references to 20 or less. No abstract or tables should be included.
Review Articles. Comprehensive discussion and literature review of a single topic of general interest. Will be evaluated as a CME offering.
Tips & Techniques. This monthly column features a useful tip or technique. Text should be 1500 words or less, with a minimal number of references. Pages must be numbered. Images should be limited to 20; 4-color images are preferred. Authors should also disclose whether they have any financial interest in the technique.
Sports Medicine Update. Manuscripts for this bi-monthly column should focus on an aspect of sports medicine. Manuscripts should follow format for Brief Reports with the abstract omitted. A case history may be included.
Trauma Update. Manuscripts for this bi-monthly column should focus on an aspect of trauma care. Manuscripts should follow format for Brief Reports with the abstract omitted. A case history may be included.
Radiologic Case Study. This “test yourself?monthly column features a radiograph and asks the reader to make a diagnosis. Refer to a recent issue as a sample when preparing submissions.
Guest Editorial. Submissions on timely issues relevant to orthopedic surgeons are welcomed. Manuscripts should be limited to 1500 words or less.
Letters to the Editor. Readers are invited to comment on articles that have appeared in the journal or share their thoughts on orthopedic topics.
Title Page: The title page should include the following: title of manuscript; author(s); institution of origin with city and state; acknowledgment of grant support; address to be used for reprint requests. An abbreviated title, to be used as a running head, should be included. Please include phone number, FAX number, and e-mail address of corresponding author.
Abstract: The abstract, not to exceed 100 words, should summarize the significant information in the paper and be understandable without reference to the text. The use of abbreviations and references should be avoided. Case reports do not require abstracts.
Tables: Tables should be double-spaced on separate pages and self-contained. Do not use vertical lines. Center the table number at the top and the table title beneath it. Abbreviations used in a table should be explained at the bottom of the table in the footnotes. Tables should be mentioned in the text, but should not duplicate information given in the text.
Figures: Four sets of unmounted glossy prints or laser prints on hard-coated paper should be enclosed in separate envelopes. Indicate lightly on the back margin of each figure the number, name of author, and top. Drawings should be professional looking and type should be readable if reduced. Photocopies or low resolution, computer-generated figures are not acceptable. Figures may be submitted digitally. The required format is .tiff or .eps at 300 dpi resolution. Color images are preferred and must be formatted CMYK. For black and white images, a grayscale must be used. Each image must be a separate, stand-alone file, named to match the figure number listed in the text. Figure legends, headings, or captions should not be included in the graphic file.
Photographs: Four copies of each photograph should be submitted. Any identifiable subject must sign a release form before the photograph can be used. This is the responsibility of the author. Radiographs and other black-and-white material should be submitted as unmounted glossy photographs. A separate identification label should be pasted on the back of each print. Legends should be double-spaced on a separate page from the text, and photograph placement must be mentioned in the text. Photographs will be returned after they have been reproduced for publication.
References: References should be double-spaced and cited consecutively in the text with superscript numbers outside punctuation. A reference to a paper “submitted for publication“unpublished data,and “personal communication should be given in parentheses in the text. At the end of each article, references should be listed in the numerical order in which they appear in the text. If a citation has more than six authors, only the first three authors should be listed, followed by et al. Abbreviations of the names of the journals should conform to Index Medicus. Journal titles should be cited as they existed at the time of publication. Unlisted journals should not be abbreviated. The authors are responsible for the accuracy of the bibliography. References should follow the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th ed.
Abbreviations and Nomenclature: Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum, preferably confined to the tables. Symbols for units of measurement (eg, mm, mL) should not be followed by periods. Chemical or generic names of drugs are preferred. A proprietary name may be given only after it is preceded by the chemical name the first time it appears. Device manufacturers and their location should appear in parentheses following mention of a device. Unfamiliar terms and abbreviations should be defined when first used.
Peer Review: Each manuscript will be peer reviewed by the Editorial Board. Review articles will be considered for review by the CME Advisory Board.
