About the journal

Optimal Control Applications & Methods provides an interdisciplinary forum for the reporting of interesting optimal control applications in order to emphasize both the commonality of the underlying theory and the diversity of its applications. The major thrust is on applications, which include: aerospace, marine and automotive systems, structural and mechanical design, robots and manufacturing systems, chemical and industrial processes, electric power systems and energy management, operations research and business, socio-economic models, biomedical systems, environmental control and ecology management, and electrical and electronic systems. A second, and complementary, objective is to provide a focal point for the development, comparison and testing of computational algorithms for solving optimal control problems.

The usual definition of optimal control implies the optimization of systems described by differential equations and at least one control function. More specifically, the class of problems appropriate for this journal includes linear-quadratic control (deterministic and stochastic), optimal adaptive control (including self-tuning), optimal shape design, dynamic programming, optimal stochastic control, periodic optimal control, optimal estimation, multi-criteria optimal control, singular perturbation methods in optimal control and the optimal control of large-scale systems, time-delay systems and non-linear feedback systems. Non-linear programming techniques are included if used in the context of solving discrete-time optimal control problems or a discrete approximation of the original optimal control problem.

Instructions to Authors
  1. Submission of manuscripts
Initial Submission. Four copies of the manuscript should be submitted to the Editor, Bion L. Pierson, Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011-3231, U.S.A. The submission must include the contact author's name: e-mail and street address; and telephone and fax numbers. No maximum length of contribution is prescribed. Authors are requested to write concisely but not at the expense of clarity. The body of the manuscript should be preceded by a summary (about 100 words) which should be a summary of the entire paper, including the conclusions. Short Communications (limited to 2000 words) and Comments (limited to 500 words) should be prepared in the same format as for full papers. No summary is required for Comments.

Submission of accepted papers. All accepted papers should be submitted to the Editor at the above address in final form.

Illustrations. (Except for final submittal on computer disk). Artwork for accepted papers should be supplied as originals on plain paper for photographic reproduction. A distinct black image must be supplied. Copies reproduced on raster devices are acceptable only if they have a resolution greater than or equal to 300 dots per inch. Drawings must be about twice the final size and the lettering must be clear and 'open', and must be large enough to be reduced in the same proportion to a final size of about 8pt.

Half-tone illustrations are to be restricted in number to the minimum necessary. Good glossy bromide prints should accompany the manuscript and should not be attached to manuscript pages. Prints from existing half-tone illustrations cannot be accepted. Photographs should be enlarged sufficiently to permit clear reproduction in half-tone after reduction. If words or numbers are to appear on a photograph, two prints should be sent, the lettering being clearly indicated on one print only.

All printed items of artwork or illustrative material should be clearly identified on the back in pencil with the author's name and the Figure number.

Submission of electronic manuscripts. If authors wish to supply an electronic version of their accepted paper then the following guidelines should be observed.

If the text of your paper is available on disk, it would be helpful to the publisher if, together with the hard copy, you were to supply two disks containing the final version of your paper. The disks should be clearly labelled with the file name, e.g. - OCARHG (The first three letters, 'OCA', represent the Wiley code for this journal and the next three letters the author's initials [if an author has only two initials the middle letter should be an X]) the date, the hardware and software packages used and the names of the files on the disk.

The preferred medium is a 3.5 or 5.25 inch disk for PC (MS-DOS or Windows) or Macintosh. We are able to deal with most standard software packages currently available, although our preference is for TeX (and/or one of its derivatives), WordPerfect or Word.

Electronic illustrations. We are also able to accept line artwork/graphics on disk. We are currently successfully using Adobe Illustrator and Aldus Freehand files. If you wish to supply these graphics on disk, then we need to have the source files in addition to the Encapsulated PostScript file that is called into the text file. This is to enable us to amend the artwork, as required, for the journal format. Again each file should be carefully named using the same code as for the text, but adding a reference for the figures - e.g. OCARHG1 (the '1' representing figure 1).

The disks must be accompanied by a hard copy printout. If the disk and the paper copy differ, the paper copy will be treated as the definitive version.

Copyright. Only original papers (not published or not simultaneously submitted to another journal) will be considered for publication. Copyright for published papers should be assigned to the publisher where possible. All submissions must be accompanied by a completed publishing agreement, copies of which are printed in the journal or available from the publisher or Editors.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the copyright holders to quote material which has appeared in another publication.

    1. Points of style
    2. Manuscripts should be typed double spaced on one side of the page only, with wide margins.

    • The language of the journal is English and the spelling should conform to that of the Oxford English Dictionary.

    • The paper should be reasonably divided into sections, and if necessary subsections. Numbering of these is optional.

    • Detailed mathematical developments, if essential, should be given in Appendixes with only the minimum of mathematics appearing in the main text.

    • Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively and titled. The Title should be placed before the body of the table or under the figure. All table columns should have an explanatory heading. Tables should not repeat data which are available elsewhere in the paper, e.g. in a line diagram.

    • References to published literature should be cited in the text using superior numbers and arranged in numerical order at the end of the paper in a Reference section. References should be arranged thus.

    2. Pierson, B.L. and J.L. de Jong, 'Cross-country sailplane flights as a dynamic optimization problem', Int. j. numer. methds eng., 12, 1743-1759 (1978).

    5. General Notes
Twenty-five offprints of each paper will be provided free of charge. Additional copies may be purchased on an offprint order form which will accompany the proofs. Offprints and correspondence will be sent to the first-named author unless otherwise stated.

Submitted material will not be returned to authors following publication unless the material is accompanied by a request to do so when it is first submitted.

The publisher will do everything possible to ensure prompt publication. In order to ensure minimum intervention to electronic submissions, it is imperative that authors follow the basic style and layout for the journal in the preparation of manuscripts. It will therefore be appreciated if submitted text and illustrations conform from the outset to the style of the journal.

Corrected page proofs must be returned to the publisher within three days to minimize the risk of the author's contribution having to be held over to a later issue.

The Editors and publisher do not accept responsibility for the correctness of published programs: it is the author's responsibility to check the program at proof stage.

NOTE: Because of recent changes in copyright laws the transfer of copyright from author to publisher, previously implicit in the submission of a manuscript, must now be explicitly transferred to enable the publisher to ensure maximum dissemination of the author's work. A copy of the Copyright Transfer Agreement to be used for Optimal Control Applications and Methods is reproduced in each volume. Additional copies are available from the journal editors or from the publisher; or contributors may photocopy the agreement from this journal or print a copy from this Web site. A copy of this agreement, signed by the author, must accompany every article submitted for publication.
